• Question about Mystic

From Dmxrob@21:4/148 to All on Sat Mar 16 18:42:18 2019
A general question, that I think I already know the answer to based on my Google-skills :-)

    Mystic is closed-source, correct?

If you could shoot me a link or file that would be great.

I wanted to look into it, but nowadays I don't do closed-source for stuff like this. Primarily because history has taught us that we are a very small ecosystem and people come and go, and software can easily get lost. So much of the golden era of BBSing is lost (doors, etc) because the person is no longer around and the source code probably was thrown out years ago.

Wow you are so right.. I got involved with a project recently that was started in 1991 on the Commodore 64, (Image BBS) I worked on the project back in 95
and 96, but had hardware issues and gave up. Now I am back on it again with a different programmer, we got bits and pieces of the ML source code, it's sad because what we have we can't do much with. Wanting to update the Y2K and
19.2k and we are stuck, contacting the original ML programmer (who was a
friend of mine) gets nothing as he won't answer emails.. It's pretty sad because there are a ton of BBS Programs out there that are lost to the world because like you said programmers walked away, or threw stuff out. etc... Ah!

Keep in mind that code is like 6 or so years old now?

Also I'd appreciate it if you didn't take the code, slap your name on it and change the name of it. Its not illegal, but its not the most ethical thing to do to a still-active project (part of the reason Mystic is now closed sourced).

(I am guessing if you go take Synchronet change it to SynchroBoard with your name slapped all over it, register Synchrobbs.com, etc, that it wouldn't be seen as a stand up move by the Synchronet people either?)

Uhhh. Who said they were going to do anything like this? You know what, you can keep your source code. I want nothing to do with people who think other people want to "steal their work" and out of the gate they start making statements about ethics because someone asked a question.

    Toodles.

If you would rather I NOT distribute this archive I will not (?) though someone

    did make note of the fact that it is accessible on Github anyway {shrug}

Hah way to have a meltdown and jump to conclusions over absolutely nothing. No one accused you of anything; the reason I mention it is because its already happened 3 times now.

Someone actually warned me that you were a bit unstable, seems so. Take care!

Nah its fine its opened sourced and people are curious. :)

The stuff on Github isn't even the original code as far as I have seen. There are 3-4 spin offs that people made although most of them have very little changes or smaller changes that are completely broken.
