    Hello

How is everyone? Had a bit of burnout and took a break for a bit, but been dabbling my toes in BBSing again.

Working on my QT based QWK reader again the last few days.

Also set up a private synchronet BBS that I'm having fun playing with. Running it on a debian VM under VMWare esxi. I bought a new (second hand) computer on ebay last night with the idea of running VMWare on it, as the one it's on presently is a bit old.

I'm thinking with 16Gb of ram and 4 cores I should be able to run about 3 VMs at once comfortably. We'll see I guess. Might be able to upgrade it to 32Gb depending on what sort of ram it takes.

Good to hear from you again. Am running again on the QWK hub...rather than with a BBS because of my 5G internet. Fast...but lack of configuration blows.

How's the family? Hope they're all okay & doing well.

Fair enough. What were you compiling it on? I chose debian because the linux instructions assume it (although it works fine on other distributions, just need to be careful as different packages on different systems)

Been fiddling with a couple of mods today, and working on splitting up the menu to a new shell so that the main menu isn't so busy like on a stock synchronet board.

It works, though it's not as feature full as something like multimail. You can grab a win32 build at:

    http://members.iinet.net.au/~apamment/

(it's called TitanMail, and the current version is 1.1.5 as of today)

The source is available on my gitlab. (I actually started on it in 2020 but have just recently done a bit of work on improving it)

RAM seems to be the constraint, but 2x16GM memory sticks for the

If I end up working for myself, I'll upgrade to a SFF server that'll
take more RAM, but for now, 4 cores/16GB seems to do fine as a hobby

Cool. Yeah, I'd only be able to upgrade the ram if I happened to have spare ram that would fit... Kind of hoping it has 4 slots with 2x 8Gb sticks of DDR3 then i could just take out the 2x8gb sticks i am using currently - but who knows.

A Samsung 480 SSD, yes. I have a couple of Seagate Barracuda Hybrid SATA drives I'd like to try out some time - they're cheap essentially a 5400RPM drive with 4GB of cache slapped on the side.

Maybe? I have no way of trying / testing or supporting it though. The only dependency outside QT is ZLib, which I'm sure ArcaOS would have, so it might work.

Actually it's got me wondering if it will run on Haiku, I believe they have QT ported also.

I actually own a copy of eComStation, but I had all sorts of trouble getting stuff working, mostly because the stuff I needed came in RPM packages, and eComStation doesn't come with RPM. You're supposed to be able to bootstrap it on eComStation, but when I tried it was broken (the boot strap RPM was to old to install the RPM of rpm or something.. it was a while ago.)

eComStation seemed somewhat unstable for me, perhaps virtual box has improved, but everytime I used it I got frustrated with it for some reason or another.

to attempt. There's only 1 BBS program for Be/Haiku...be amazing to have not only a QWK reader for it...but some BBS software as well.

At one time a long time ago, I got magicka to compile on Haiku, but ssh had trouble because of a bug in haiku, telnet worked fine though.

I don't know if it still works, probably not. Also had magiterm running on it for fun, SSH worked, but no password manager so I just disabled password saving on that platform (which is annoying).

I guess I should just save the passwords directly on the disk like other BBS terminals, perhaps as a fallback if an os password manager isn't available.

That's kewl! Never bothered using SSH...but knowing this...gives me hope.

    That's an option...especially since I shave my head...so I can't lose what I don't have.

Did join the Haiku community & got these replies:

You cannot install to /boot/system directly in this way. So you need to configure it to install to /boot/system/non-packaged instead. There is probably some command line flag to pass to cmake to set this (sometimes called CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX or something similar) but it can change from project to project. So you have to check TitanMail QWK build documentation to find the correct flag.

Then your make install will work.

So...of to the dox I go.

Another reply said there is a copy of quazip in our depot  check in Terminal with pkgman search quazip1 (got a local copy thats the latest version but at least TeXstudio would need a rebuild for that then)

Gonna try this 1st & go from there.

    Hello

    Hey :)

How is everyone? Had a bit of burnout and took a break for a bit, but
been dabbling my toes in BBSing again.

I've been working from home but heading into the office tomorrow for the first time in about 9 months... I'm planning on wearing a mask all day but not sure I'll handle it.

Been doing some BBSing also but equally have been keeping an eye on parents health and also supporting my immediate family with their usual ups and downs so yeah never a dull day.

Nice to chat with you again in echomail... I think everyone is busier and or got other things on these days but it's nice when I see a few old (can we say that now :)) names pop up now and then.

Been watching some 70's and 80's movies lately on a streaming service called Tubi that costs nothing other than sitting through ads for T Mobile and Walmart etc. I think the IPv6 tunnel I am running allows me to watch this stuff so that's kinda a bonus.

Watched The Taking of Pelham 123 from 1976?? tonight. Not bad, I liked it more than the 90's version with Denzal Washington in it.

I expect after the next few days my brain may be fried as I won't be used to all the people contact having done most of my meetings over Teams or Zoom or... so yeah, bracing myself for a bit of mental decompression over the weekend. The nice thing is it will be a long weekend here as we have a public holiday (Queen's Birthday) next Monday.

Anywhoo, nice to see you around and I hope you're having fun playing with whatever you're working on at the mo that brings you interest.

    Best, Paul

Do they still require mask wearing there? Here it's only required in health care settings like going to the doctor or chemist. We choose to wear ours anyway when we go out, but we don't have to.

Our area of non-urban Wisconsin masks have disappeared except healthcare/nursing-home settings.

Almost never see people masked up.

Other parts of Wisconsin (like in the Peoples Republic of Madison) did a lot more masking, even though the running statistics didn't show benefit of doing so.

As it is I keep a "face covering" fabric mask in my pocket for my swimming center, as you have to walk through a healthcare clinic to get to the pool, and have a supply of surgical courtesy masks (the typical ones you see) for nursing home and medical center proper visits.

I'm more prone to wearing a mask doing dusty chores than playing virus-theater.

I know how that feels - especially when you feel as though people are waiting on you. I guess that's when it starts to stop being a hobby and start being a job, then the fun can drain away.

For me I have to stop feeling obliged to fix problems and add features, people are free to run something else if what i've made doesn't fit their purpose, they could even add the feature themselves if they really wanted it.

Having said that, it's not like I don't want to help solve problems and add features, I just have to do it on my own time and not rush thinking someone is there tapping their foot urging me to hurry up.

It's all in my head though really, I don't experience people wanting me to hurry up - perhaps some kind of anxiety related thing.

I wonder if it's similar to running a popular net?

I don't know to be honest. I don't really keep track of the weather, except to say that it's been cold that last few days / weeks. They just started giving out food options as you departed at the end of the flight.

There is something in that yes, but at the moment it's more that just there's only so much mental energy to go around, what with all the dramas with covid-19 lockdowns and trying to avoid getting sick, remote working for months at a time, sick parents, keeping my own kids on the straight and narrow and supporting them during these crazy times, my wife still working through her mums death (and estate wind-up some 2 years later that will get sorted by Christmas). .. it's a mix of things to be fair.

Having said that, it's not like I don't want to help solve problems and add features, I just have to do it on my own time and not rush thinking someone is there tapping their foot urging me to hurry up.

I'm probably more attuned to it at the moment as we burn a lot of wood to keep warm and with that comes lugging it into the house most nights... so I know when it's cooler heh... but I do like that warmth of a fireplace and as such have to be prepared to keep at the lifting and lugging of wood. I hope never go down the path of a heat pump... still I should never say never.

I kind of feel like I need to make time to focus on fsxNet and I
certainly do do that but perhaps not as much as before because of all of the stuff above.

Yep, can understand that. It's tough because even though it's a hobby, it's important to you and so you can't just let it go for a while or things start to fall apart. I guess that's something different, to me my BBS software is no longer that important to me, and having people use it isn't important either, so if I let it go for a bit, and they jump on something else or keep using as is, it doesn't matter. With a net you've always got to work on it to keep it up - with software it doesn't stop working if you don't constantly add new things.

the stuff above. I'm a bit slower to respond to some new membership requests (and feel a bit bad about that) at times but like you remind myself it's a hobby and to do things at my own pace and when it feels enjoyable etc. to do so.

Yep, I guess it's a fine line, on one hand people don't mind waiting a bit, on the other if they wait too long they get frustrated and naggy lol. Still, I think there's some wiggle room, waiting a week or so is fine, when it approachs a month of no response it's not so fine - but even then, if you keep them in the loop so they don't think you've quit and the net is on autopilot, it wouldn't be so bad.

Haha... it's not just in your head, perhaps we start a support group for like minded folks :)

Hehe, I thought this was it ??

lugging of wood. I hope never go down the path of a heat pump... still I should never say never.

heat pump? we have an air conditioner that also does heat, when I was in SA had a fire place, that was nice - kind of miss it, but don't miss the constant getting / stacking wood etc.

I agree... today has been fun, most of what I am doing is trying to swat down inactive nodes and delink them. For all the upsides of running a mix of BinkD and HPT etc. it's a royal pain to have to edit multiple config files to add and remove nodes, equally I have to manually check echo stats to see which node is building up with excess files, days... and then also manually poll as that node to clear held/stuck echomail as well as clear fileboxes...

I confess the Mystic setup up for auto removal and one place to add/remove a node vs 3-4 config files is far more appealing..

It's not like the network has stopped working while I'm not as active but yes I guess there are risks things can bung up at HUB etc. and then that's when issues can occur. There's a packet I need to check out with Solaris for NET 2 causing him some issues so that's on my to-do soon but really for the most part things run smoothly without me being on every day.

It's in the area of adding/removing nodes that takes a bit of time so I do need to make time for that admin. That's cool, I'm fine with that but may not be acting on things within 30 mins now :)

the stuff above. I'm a bit slower to respond to some new membership requests (and feel a bit bad about that) at times but like you remind myself it's a hobby and to do things at my own pace and when it feels enjoyable etc. to do so.

Yep, I guess it's a fine line, on one hand people don't mind waiting a bit, on the other if they wait too long they get frustrated and naggy
lol. Still, I think there's some wiggle room, waiting a week or so is fine, when it approachs a month of no response it's not so fine - but
even then, if you keep them in the loop so they don't think you've quit and the net is on autopilot, it wouldn't be so bad.

    yep...

Haha... it's not just in your head, perhaps we start a support group like minded folks :)

Hehe, I thought this was it ??

    Aha... good to know heh

heat pump? we have an air conditioner that also does heat, when I was in SA had a fire place, that was nice - kind of miss it, but don't miss the constant getting / stacking wood etc.

Yes I imagine you'd be far more aircon for cooling that heating. Lugging firewood builds muscles and gives me a chance at wrist wrestling... but only a chance

Ah, I hadn't thought about the snacks / tea / coffee etc.

I think about them too much heh...

Hah, I just made a coffee and got a bowl of peanuts :D

I agree... today has been fun, most of what I am doing is trying to swat down inactive nodes and delink them.

You should try running fsxnet with postie. I bet you'd love hpt after that lol. Posite works (I'm running happynet with it) but it's all configured in one long toml file - which is ok if you're just an end node, but as a hub it gets a bit unweildly, and I'm only running a tiny net. I shudder to think what it would be like with fsx size node list.

I confess the Mystic setup up for auto removal and one place to add/remove a node vs 3-4 config files is far more appealing..

Sounds like the management side of things was well done with that.

Yep, that's where it's ongoing work. I honestly don't think a couple of days is bad at all, I've signed up to a couple of smaller nets and both have taken a few days to get running. 30 minutes is pretty awesome, but I don't think anyone expects that speediness.

Yes I imagine you'd be far more aircon for cooling that heating. Lugging firewood builds muscles and gives me a chance at wrist wrestling... but only a chance

While I am sure it doesn't get as cold as down there, it does get fairly cold up here. Toowoomba's up on top of the great dividing range, so gets quiet a bit cooler than say brisbane or on the coast. Though lately with all the rain / flooding we'd be getting that whole ad campaign "beautiful one day, perfect the next" is a little bit thrown out the window... and Queensland the "Sunshine" state,

There is a house (probably a few) near our unit complex with a wood fireplace, you can smell the smoke when it's cold. It's not overpowering or anything, but kind of reminds me of spending time with grand parents in South Australia out on the farm lighting camp fires in the winter.

I'm probably more attuned to it at the moment as we burn a lot of wood to keep
warm and with that comes lugging it into the house most nights... so I know when it's cooler heh... but I do like that warmth of a fireplace and as such
have to be prepared to keep at the lifting and lugging of wood. I hope never go
down the path of a heat pump... still I should never say never.

Remember living in the Nephi area in Utah when I was a pre-teen. This would put it roughly around 1970. Had a wood stove in the kitchen in the farm house we lived in...but for the main heat source...used a coal fired furnace in tthe living room. The thing was HUGE (enough to store 2 full-sized coffins in).

Hated hauling coal in from the shed at least twice a day. Wood smells good & doesn't leave you black like coal. So happy that's a form of heat which has come and gone.

I have flown a couple of flights this year so far and it's a bit of a
pain but not too much so. They stopped serving nibbles mid-flight and coffee/tea also but that made sense when you're asking folks to keep
masks on. They just started giving out food options as you departed at
    the end of the flight.

Coffee and tea made with the water in the holding tanks is a bad idea - I'd get yours from the concourse and bring it on.

I'm doing the same thing in Fidonet and Micronet. I miss having a graphical tool to zap outbound mail waiting for a node that's no longer connecting. I need to find the .?lo file and manually delete the files.

Then, edit areas.bbs and tickit.ini in a text editor, remove the node from Synchronet, re-run makenl, and so on.

I suppose I could spend some time to write a script to do it all, since at
the end of the day it's all text configs.

Yes when things run at scale that's when I miss the all in one features stuff to do that automated admin... having many text files to stay on top of whist giving more granularity also brings more admin overheads...

Coal reminds me of school days and smells from the boiler used on site... agree
    wood is much nicer :)

Going to today...working in a big box store here in Oregon. Hauling coal reminds me of unloading a box lorry/truck and looking like I've been playing in the coal bin. The coal was MUCH easier than unloading 1000+ pieces of merchandise.
