I've been working on a fish pond that's been leaking and to be honest have not been as busy in the geek space as I have been but I think as move into winter here I'll get more active again :)

Interesting - did you lay down something to seal it and then spread heavy boulders and things along the bottom to keep it in place? A friend of mine's dad built a pond in his back yard when we were kids, he was
always out there messing with his pond and making his wife mad since he spent so much of his time there lol.

It's a rough cast concrete pond that came with the house when we bought it.

To start with we had tried to put a pond liner in but that was a massive fail as I had to cut it to accommodate an overflow pipe that comes up from the base of the pond. Looking back I don't know why I bothered with that idea.

So this time around it was swimming pool paint (only colour is a light blue - sigh) and before we used it we cleaned out the pond, got rid of all loose stones and grit in it. Then ran a coat of some pre-sealer paint we were told to use before using the pool paint.

Then did 3 coats of pool paint and waited 2 weeks before filling up the pond

Now we've bought 6 new terracotta pots that we can put the Lillys back into and this weekend is all about doing that and tidying up some stonework.

Hopefully in a few more weeks we can buy some goldfish and get them in

It's autumn here and getting colder quick, so I am hopeful in the coming weeks we can get it sorted before the weekends become too meh.

Haha! I'll see your housework, and raise you an entire Saturday's worth
    of yardwork! ;-)

That's something I'm not looking forward to as far as buying a house again.. I'm glad I don't have to do that right now (I'm living in an apartment). People talk about the "American dream" as far as owning a house, but the yard work & such needed for a house isn't really appealing. I wouldn't mind having a house with a very small yard, or one that doesn't have any grass (and maybe no trees), and perhaps is paved.

Yeah, I hear ya on that. It can indeed be a pain, but mostly I actually
enjoy most of it. I guess especially in the springtime, when things are really starting to grow again. Getting the trees (palms and similar)
trimmed up and looking good makes the whole place look fresh and clean
again. Obviously grass mowing too, which I don't mind too much, and
usually a once-per-year pressure-washing of walkways, porch, driveway.

After a couple of months of this, the enjoyment level drops off quite a
bit, largely because of the heat/humidity through the summer here
(Florida). It's a real challenge to get the work done then (about every
10-14 days, sometimes more often). But anyway, it's something that we
deal with, and owning the home is a good thing, overall. :-)

We put in artificial turf in a small area for the dogs to roll around
in. The rest of the yard is gravel, paving stones and succulents/dune
grass along the border. It's drought-resistant and almost maintenance
    free.

The repairs are a different issue. Luckily we have a contractor we
love, he was part of a team that did a kitchen remodel. We've used him
to remodel the deck area outside of my home office, do some tweaking to
our family room, re-did a storage area and did some roof and siding
repairs. It ain't cheap, but he's great at being thrifty where he can.
He re-used a lot of material to keep with the vintage of the house and
keep us from having to spend more on new materials.

That's good.. It would be good to have a trusted contractor who does work you like.
