    Hey...

Beaut day today, so if it lasts, it should be coming your way tomorrow.

I'm enjoying my Sat morning, breaky, fresh coffee and catching up on a few nerd things.

I bought 2 x 16TB drives to put in my nas, to replace my 3 x 8s, which I plan to repurpose for something else. (Needed the 8s and not the capacity, so I thought the NAS could get new drives instead of buying more 8s.)

Since I'm changing from RAID5 down to RAID1, its a copy operation - but I've turned on zstd compression and getting some resonable results at the same time.

I've only got 6TB to copy, but the poor little qnap is CPU bound, has been for the last 2 days, and it'll probably take 2-3 more at this rate.

Now off to bunnings to buy some wood - need to put up an awning for the trouble and strife.

Just got invited from some friends to go to the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival, it'll be on April 1st this year.

    https://www.elmiramaplesyrupfestival.com/

We've been a couple of times before, it's always a good time, though it's been cold some years. Nothing quite like trying to eat a huge turkey drumstick in a dinner tent while is slowly freezes in your hand.

Hoping this year it's a bit warmer.

I've been busy with travel, work and family. Circling back to some admin fsxNet duties today. Also just giving myself a little break from time to time form BBSing which I think is a good thing to do, I think I risk getting burnt else otherwise and I suspect a few here are in the same boat.

I believe it is a proper "BBS philosophy". This medium is not really prepared to compete with constant online, constant scrolling attitude toward alternatives. And that is good!

I have moments that I check BBSes on a daily basis then to forget about them for a month, only to come back hungry for more!

It's been this way for 3 years already and the only thing I change is my primary board that hooks me in, most.

They are, but both are so yummy!

I always thought, pancakes by nature and name, were spoonfuls of batter hurled at a red hot frying pan, and after a quick flip they're done. While the waffle was a square brick like thing that you fed into a toaster, that my parents used to snaffle down with cream and strawberry jam.

While I understand you could start and batter and bang it into a waffle iron, I've not ever seen that as a thing, or how that might vary from the pancake batter.

Can't complain. I've been enjoying much of the sunlight we've been stealing from you.

heh, we're down to 3-4 weeks of daylight savings time and then we slip back into darkness again... :)

Here we're in the delightful period when the US has gone to daylight savings time, but Europe has not, so now the US time zones are all an hour closer.

As much as I prefer daylight savings time (I'm not a morning person, but I'm awake for pretty much every sunset), it's nice to only be 6 or 8 hours ahead of family, when having a video call, rather than 7 or 9 hours.

Now you're getting into the fun area of, "what happens if I put x in y?"

A pancake batter put into a hot waffle iron will result in a waffle.

"Best waffle ever", no, probably not, but the batters are not _that_ different.

I've occasionally cracked eggs into a waffle iron, too. I'm not sure it's a good idea, but it's certainly interesting and different to get a waffle egg.

I think it was around 2005 when the US changed DST to be March to November. I thought it was fine when the US was in DST from April to October.

You'll have to try popping it in your leg of ham for roasting. Works a treat, pretty old way to do it too. Along with glace cherries pinned to the top with toothpicks. Kind of gives you a glaze on the ham, and you get the caramelised pineapple to have with it afterwards.

It might be part of the origin for putting pineapple on your pizza too.

You'll have to try popping it in your leg of ham for roasting. Works a treat, pretty old way to do it too. Along with glace cherries pinned to the top with toothpicks. Kind of gives you a glaze on the ham, and you
get the caramelised pineapple to have with it afterwards.

It might be part of the origin for putting pineapple on your pizza too.

My mother use to score the ham to end up with diamond shapes that she would then place a clove in the middle of. Next would be to cover the whole ham
with pineapple rings. Then the whole thing would be placed in the oven for, as far as I was concerned, too long to bake! The pineapple would be the first thing I would go for.

One of my favorite things about traveling is going to a hotel with continental breakfast service featuring one of those flippy waffle
irons. In fact, it's the only thing I enjoy about traveling. :)

And I'm always sad when the hotel is "fancy" and has nothing, or they have "interesting" options (that I then have to check if it has meat in it) when all I really want is that flippy waffle iron and scrambled eggs.

Unfortunately, no - it was writing VAX assembly code. Our class had 30 people, and a VAX with 8 serial ports. 4 of them connected to terminals, the other 4 went into a port selector.

The best way to get the problem sets done was to get wired up, write the code down, then dial in at 2am to enter and run your code.

I think that was the last class where I needed to use a campus computer; the rest could be done on a "microcomputer".

Traffic has been down across all of the nets, suppose that life is
    getting in the way.

I'm going to be at my family's cabin in the mountains soon, looking
forward to some time out of town. Trying to get DSL up there has been a
pain, we're in an unincorporated community and most of AT&T's automated
    systems don't register our address.

Our neighbors were able to get DSL but it took many many calls.

Once I get DSL up there, I'm planning on spending more time up there -
would love to work remotely from there in the summertime, and to keep
track of the BBS from there.

In the meantime, I have a 1TB card in my phone, all of my movies loaded
onto it, and a USB-C to HDMI cable that lets me play movies on our TV.

I've been busy with family matters (unwell parents etc.) and at the end of the day after work, immediate and extended family stuff is acted on I'm kinda spent... so apologies (to all) for not being as active here in fsxNet as of late.

I don't have any plans to depart the scene etc. but rather just need to pace myself with real life demands a bit at the moment.

    sounds nice :)

I'm traveling again soon to visit one of my children. Lending a hand while there to help tidy up/sort out a storage shed... so it's going to be a busy few days of lugging and lifting, trips to the landfill to sort out rubbish/trash etc..

It's at the back end of a little community. When we built it in 1979, we
were the only house on the block. Now we have neighbors across the

The nice thing is that we butt up against a 5mi x 5mi area of national

My wife and I were flipping around on the on-demand channels on Roku
and found an "all Pepa Pig, all the time" channel. Kids these days got
    it MADE!

I've been trying to get my grown kids to get their heads around having
cartoons on only from 7:00am until around 10:30am on Saturdays. You'd
be into your third hour of cartoons, sitting in front of the TV with a
bowl of sugary cereal turned to mush in front of you when a cartoon
would end, and the next show was something like Meet the Press.

Or so long as you're on the right side of the mountain, a mast?

he's really into the "super simple songs" on youtube, especially "noodle and pals" haha, we bought him a board book from amazon with those characters and he loved it.. to death. Wife being an ex-library
assistant fixed it once, but the second time it was time to go... so we ordered two more of the same book :P

he he... nice one, good to get them started early on the books, he's in good hands :)

We must have been spoiled in my area, or maybe I am a little older. Here
you could find cartoons on until noon on at least one station. That is
when wrestling came on. ;) I do remember the abrupt transition from
    cartoons to other programming.

Later in the afternoon, the Muppet Show would come on for a half-hour, and another station ran a half-hour of Looney Tunes. That was handy during the winter when it started getting dark early.

    Yep!

... So easy, a child could do it. Child sold separately.
