• Changes to FSX_CRY ?

From Avon@21:1/101 to All on Fri Jan 7 15:15:48 2022
    Hi there

I'm wondering if the focus of the cryptographic topics discussed in the relatively lower activity level FSX_CRY echomail area should / could be widened?

Given there is increased interest in cryptographic currency, blockchain tech and NFT etc. perhaps those subjects can be formally incorporated into this echomail area along with the current stuff around encoded messages, keys etc.?

What are your thoughts? If you have any please share them in FSX_NET echomail area.

I will crosspost this message to FSX_GEN, FSX_CRY and FSX_NET

    Thanks for your input :)

    Best, Paul

What about another direction - VPN's?

I recently setup Wireguard - I'd heard about it in passing and had that on my "to look at list".

What got me sparked, is I noticed that the firmware on my router supports it (I use Mikrotik's - and I'm a fan of those), and it supported it.

So since I'm away camping with the family, I thought I'd try it out when the kids are asleep.

Have to say, I like it. Really easy and performs well (which are its two strongest attributes that it boasts about). Ive used many over the years - IPSec, OpenVPN, tinc and I think I'll deprecate all my other VPNs for Wireguard...

Anybody else used it - any thoughts?

I think that sounds fine also, I really just wanted to flesh out the description against the echoarea tag so there was wider scope. I'll probably try to work on that over the coming day or so.

It just works and seems to be reliable, but I haven't used it much. If I understand it correctly it doesn't support direct p2p connections out of the box like tinc or zerotier, but I haven't followed recent development.

Wireguard is the new standard VPN (at least on Linux).

Yes, I like zerotier too - but they are two different VPNs with different use cases IMHO.

In fact, I like zerotier because it is p2p between anybody connected on the same network, whereas wireguard has a "server" component.

Wireguard certainly is fast and useful to get into the home network while outside of it.

Big Mikrotik fan here as well! I just upgraded my brother to Mikrotik gear as well. I setup Wireguard on my phone to my house and it works well. It is really nice to be able to use pihole at home over it while out and about.. so I don't have ad's while browsing, and ofcourse can get to resources at home.

As well, I setup a tunnel between my house and my brother.. and it has been rock solid! I can just hop into his router/switch/ap's from home with winbox and help him out when needed.

I have used ovpn, etc in the past. So far it seems Wireguard is very lightweight on resources, and fast!

Once I get the boy a new router setup.. I really want to see if I can get EoIP over wireguard.. so we can play on the same 'local' minecraft server.. curious to see if that works out!

    Howdy,

minecraft server.. curious to see if that works out!

    Have you tried out zerotier?

It'll make a network "local" - although using minecraft doesnt need to be local? I have a minecraft server setup for my son, and his friends connect in from their homes.

Yeah, I have.. works well but ehh.. quite a bit of added latency.

Well it has been quite some time.. but I want to say this was the bedrock edition and at least at the time we last played.. it did not have the ability to connect to internet servers.. only local LAN.

Just gave me a reason to play with EoIP honestly =P

I was actually really curious how multicast traffic would behave across it. Just out of curiosity more than anything. Like.. cast this youtube video from here to a device over there *shrug* Random ideas to fool with. LOL

I've found that ZeroTier does use the most optimal routing possible between hosts. I find it works well. I'm even running a MMDVM and AllStar node over ZT, which took a bit of configuration, because I'm routing a 44.x IP over it, which the default configuration doesn't allow. Anyway, I can take this system to just about any working Internet connection, fire it up, wait several minutes, and I'm on the air. :)

Don't get me wrong.. I think ZeroTier is great, and does work great. I am not a HAM, but am familiar with what you're talking about. That is pretty awesome actually! HAH I had to stop and think about that for a second.. WOW.. technology is something else ;)

I have ZeroTier to be very useful and versatile, and its default configuration helps to prevent people from shooting themselves in the foot too easily. :) I had to use a couple of command line options to enable ZT to work with 44.x addresses and carry the default route.

Yes, there's some really cool technology around these days. I was just pointing out that ZT does try to optimise routing. You can forward the ZT port to avoid having to use nat traversal techniques too. Only thing I've noticed is ZT seems to favour using IPv4 to carry traffic on, even though I have links where IPv6 would actually offer a better route.
