From Phoobar@21:2/147 to All on Fri Apr 17 18:53:44 2020

Am working on getting TG/2 running on ArcaOS...along with SGMail/D'Bridge...FastEcho.

Currently have SIO 1.60 set up with all 4 ports (COM1-4) saying they are
there with the first 2 slots on all four saying "N/A". The last 2 slots list
as "VIRTUAL MODEM" & "UART". In the CONFIG.SYS...have 4 seperate listings on the same line which read: (COM*,INTERNET:3FA(for COM1),NONE,4,-)

Have gone thru the dox & asked for help in several echoes...but haven't
gotten any reply. Can someone let me know the proper configuration of this
and SIO2K? Am attempting to get the 1st 4 COM ports set up.

Attempting to get into Telegard/2...keeps letting me know it can't init the modem. Inside of SGMail...says it can't find the COM port to use. On the
other hand...have all 4 nodes running on TG/2 & when I copied my message
bases over & set them up in TG/2...was reading old messages. Do have another question...TG/2 uses 8.3 file names...with some of the bases not in that format. Once I get everything set up & tell FE to setup the bases automatically...what is going to happen when bases are added?

    Thank you!

He is also in the BBSing 2.0 group that Sean Dennis runs. Sean, and some others there, are also good with SIO.

If you don't do FB, you can probably find Sean in the FIDO OS/2 echo, and
for sure you can find him on Micronet. I would try the MIN_COMP echo.

In addition, I will take a look at my DOS BBS in a bit and see what my
settings are. I am running a DOS BBS using SIO2K, so the settings are a
    little different.

Can do it either place. Bad thing is he's having issues with his foot surgery

Believe I have the problems half figured out. Setup a 4.52 VM in VirtualBox last night. Downloaded SIO2K & installed it & configured it. Going to HARDWARE MANAGER...everything was there when I added nPorts=4 to the end of VMODEM.SYS in my CONFIG.SYS. This afternoon...will install some piece of DOS or OS/2 BBS software on it & expect to see it p/u every modem. From there...back to
    ArcaOS to recreate it.

Part of the reason I'm not spending much time at the moment was this. Believe
    I have it figured out.

After using the VM of Warp from Sean Dennis... got an arcaOS VM set up. Using SIO2K...got it where everything is showing up in hardware mgr. Installing a test of TG/2...still getting errors with the INIT string...but the upper left window is showing modem activity. They are there!

Reuben has been helping me with this by sharing his setup. It was from there
I believe I may have found the issue with ArcaOS & SIO*. Believe it may have
a Y2k bug because the updated version doesn't show the same results. Hope I'm wrong.

Have the next 3 days off...so am going to get the system setup & kick out
some tests. Will have my fingers/toes crossed it goes well!

Glad things are progressing. My Warp 4.52 tanked on me last night. Can't
get the darn to boot. Some process is preventing it. So since you have made progress with ArcaOS, I'll start another VM, using that.

Hate when that happens...but I look at it as a learning experience. If I put down every time I have to reload because of something stupid I did...would

You got much further than I ever did with shared folders. Glad to hear it can work with either version.

Haven't read my email yet. Was in bed by 11 & up by 4 wanting something to

keeping the modem init string very simple helped. I had some extra
stuff in there on the node that answers a real modem, but the vmodem
    nodes are all ATZ.

Got hold of BBBS last night & played around with it. Nice package...but it's got too much stuff built in for me to run a BBS with.

Gotta work until 4 PM PDT...then should have 3 days off. Will be doing more research at that time.

I finally got Frontdoor and Maximus working today under OS/2 4.52. SIO really worked me over good until I figured it out. I looked at BBBS. How do you like it so far?

Seem to have sio2k working with all 4 ports there...but opening up 55555 on the router at the address of the box...still can't connect with

it to answer...I can run tests on the front end...FastEcho & TG/2.

The only port I could get SIO t0 work with was 2323. I tried dozens of port numbers but that one worked so I port forwarded my router to the bbs IP. I
had to change my settings in C:\MPTN\ETC\SERVICES to get it to work. I removed both port 23 lines and added 2323/tcp and 2323/udp. Rebooted OS/2 and it worked. I wanted to use port 2023 but no luck. I may try 55555 and see if it will work because I get a lot of port probers on 2323.

Having talked to a SYSOP who runs this software...had considered it at first. Having looked at it last night...it feels like owning a Terex truck as my vehicle because I might want to haul a lot of stuff one day or where I used
to live with a lot of snowbirds...be a way to get Sunday drivers permanently taken care of.;)

Turned on BritBox & started watching Waiting for God. Even got ArcaOS to be able to connect over the network with my BBS netbook...but still haven't
gotten my media server connecting to the Warp box yet. Have a feeling it's a permissions issue.

Just had a thought at work that the reason I may not be able to connect is because of a built-in firewall in ArcaOS...but can't find a way to be able to punch a hole in said firewall. Could be wrong...but it gives all indications that telnet may be blocked on every port.

It takes a bit of getting used to and a little bit of a learning curve. Much different from other BBS software, but it is an all in one package. Works great under ArcaOS and doesn't need VModem to work. I can get support but response is slow.

Tried your port...2323...55555 & ended up at 2666. Nothing worked. Don't believe it's an OS/2 issue...but my Zyxel C1100Z is blocking the port...no matter what port I change it to. On the other hand...the BBS on 7788 & unblocking BinkP has no issue...especially since I'm using the IP address at that BBS port from my main PC.

Yes, she was the Aunt on Doc Martin, and left that show to rejoin the cast
of "Open All Hours" for it sequel, "Still Open All Hours."

And Jen was the Receptionist, too. I did some checking into that... I
think she was actually playing both characters during the same time frame.
She plays/ed the female lead in the drama "Humans" also, which came after
her stints on Doc Martin and the IT Crowd, and was one of the leads on a single-season drama about a bunch of pregnant women who mostly wind up as friends.

Her IT Crowd character is my favorite of the ones she has done that I have seen.

If you liked the IT Crowd, check on the British/Irish comedy, "Moone Boy." Chris O'Dowd plays the imaginary friend to the lead character, a young boy named Martin Moone. Hilarious. I believe that show was his concept, too.
BTW, O'Dowd also had a two-episode guest role on Doc Martin as the business partner to Louisa's father... and a schizophrenic (sp?) who plays havok on Martin and Louisa.

I cannot remember if "Jen" was still the receptionist for those episodes, or
if that was before or after her stint. I think it was either before or
    during.

Onto a more serious note...believe the issue with ArcaOS is the router is not opening the port to allow communication. Am thinking of taking this board off line for about an hour or so...assign the Warp box the IP address...open the port on the SERVICES file to see what happens. If this doesn't work...would putting the Warp box with the BBS into the DMZ work?

Not having a port open would do it. I am not sure you have to take your
main system offline. I think you only have to open a "hole" in the router
for that port pointed at the IPA of the OS/2 VM. Unless, of course, you
are attempting to use the same port on both machines, in which case your
board machine would need to come down first before you change the router.

Was going to try to get this done the last 3 days...but will have to wait

Still have the board on 7788...bink on 24554 & it all works. I try to open up other holes...the router says they are done...but when I do the online port sniffer...only the 2 above are open.

If I can get the board/tosser/front end running...will be moving to the 2
open ports. May just give OS/2 the same IP address as the netbook & see if

Some of the old DLink routers are supported by DD-WRT, check it out. Stable, more features, and I liked being able to run one interface across multiple brands of routers. Over the years I ran Linksys, Belkin and DLink, running
    the same OS.

I read it as a wired/wireless router, but you could be right. Good point to bring up, the wireless router would need to be set in "bridge mode" if possible, otherwise give it an IP outside of your DHCP range, point the gateway to the wired router, turn off DHCP server on the wireless router,
and plug the cable into the wireless router's LAN ports, NOT the WAN port.

    Instant access point.

I know of that trick, but it still might not give you what you want. You
want your external gateway to allow more than two port forwards.

Putting the gateway into bridge mode is still only going to allow one
device to act as the router, so that might not work either.

The next issue you will face is if you can login as admin to your gateway
and make changes. A lot of ISP's wont give you access to those features.

I've got an old DLink wired & wireless router I need to pull out & setup only for this box. Will have to find out how to make them function together.
Be aware that if you have:
    *router 1*-----*router2*---< devices
    VVVV
    devices
You might run into double NAT and it will bite you.

Yep. My DSL router has a WAN/LAN port on it which isn't being used. If I run the extra router thru this...& turn off the NAT on the DSL...will that take care of it?

Some of the old DLink routers are supported by DD-WRT, check it out. Stable, more features, and I liked being able to run one interface

no listing to a limit. It doesn't show if it's even posable to put it
    into bridged mode.

How is your connection provisioned? ADSL2+ or VDSL?

If you have the login details for the connection (not the login to the
router), then you could get a router known to allow what you want and
    then use that.

Here in Australia, the ISP's are not allowed to lock us into a certin
brand of router. They have to allow us to use what we want, witch I have
    done when replacing clients devices.

Actually, while it might appear we have dozens of ISPs in Australia, we dont.

We have a single infrastructure provider - with "dozens" of resellers.

So while the consumer can choose the device they use - and some resellers provide devices as a starter (they are not locked to that device, but you are contracted to pay for it), the monthly pricing of said service is IMHO fixed.

Most retailers charge around the same price, which is probably their minimum (so its very competitive). However the underlying infrastructure provider charges what they like.

In theory, they are charging their costs (for their always outdated infrastructure, which started 10 years ago, and I got access to it 2 months ago), but compared to the infrastructure that other countries have its super expensive.

I think I saw somewhere in NZ they have 1G/1G services for sub $100/month. I think in the US they do too? I'm struggle to get a 100MB service for that price

I have first hand experiance with that, and it was very frustrating.

That same wholesale provider also wasn't expanding the network, to reach

Yeah, Australia has largely separated infrastructure from ISPs. In the past, the formar government telco, now privatised owned most of the infrastructure, but they did sell access to other ISPs... At a price.

Now, we have the government built NBN, which ISPs pay for access to on a fairly level playing field. I now have NBN here, and I can choose any NBN capable ISP in the country. If I want to change ISP (I don't, but let's say I do for the sake of the exercise), I would sign up to the new ISP, which would start a process called "churning", where the old ISP's connection is turned off, and the new one is enabled. I would keep the same infrasture, and if I wanted to, I can generally use the same modem/router. Chruning was possible on the Telstra owned ADSL network too.

cable/telco. I have no IPv6 address because the cable company here
(Shaw) hasn't put it on the wire for whatever the reason is. Perhaps
    it not ready.

I've got it here, but the crappy router the cable company gives us is

    Hello Tiny,

If it works for you that's all that matters. I was a huge promoter
of TS back in the day...

All I can say is so far so good.

minute or two. I once asked them some questions around IPv6 that
the person told me they would have to ask someone to get back to
me and they did 30 minutes later.

That's good! Maybe they are getting better.

I haven't called in a while. I'm going to call again and ask about IPv6, see how long it takes them to answer.

cable/telco. I have no IPv6 address because the cable company
here (Shaw) hasn't put it on the wire for whatever the reason is.
    Perhaps it not ready.

That's another thing that could be an issue. I hope it's not broken whenever Shaw does wire it up.

Haha, OK. I may be down to that. I've found myself in mandatory isolation for at least a few days. :/

Heard about that in General Chat. Keep busy & stay safe.

Got plenty to do, including a new BBS! :D Got to build a proof of concept system for a local radio club. I think I'll go with Synchronet, because (1) I know it, and (2) it has the flexibility needed these days, especially with its Internet integration.

Was in fixing breakfast & asked myself how you were doing...before
    getting on here.

All good here, you probably had to wait out the time difference for an answer. :D

Nice! Trying to get an RG2TG menu mockup working with TG. That way...will be running TG...but with RG menus. Best of all worlds for me.
