• New BBS in the works.

From apam@21:1/126 to All on Sun Feb 23 12:04:22 2020
    Hey

So I was bored yesterday and started on a new BBS package (because
that's what I do when I am bored).

So far I have logins and signups working and reading squish message
    bases.

You can have a look at a snapshot via HappyLand or directly at nocturnal.hopto.org:2626 if you want to.

This one runs on windows only, is written in C++, and consists of 2
programs, Servo which answers the telnet connection, and Ghost which
gets passed the socket handle and runs the BBS.

I'm a bit tired of working on it today, so might pick it up later.

    Anyway, just having fun. :)

    Andrew

I'd give anything to have your skill set and move to redoing the old source
code to Renegade or Virtual Advance 5.0 source code.

    Maybe next life!

I'd love to see squish and *.msg support in Magicka. I don't think I'd
use *.msg for a lot but there are times when *.msg support comes in
handy. Makenl only has support for *.msg and some games use *.msg to
attach files to be sent to other nodes. The GAC games come to mind.

I haven't actually setup netmail on the BBS yet but I wonder, does
Magicka do AKA matching, so if I write a netmail to an fsxNet node it
uses my fsxNet AKA and if I write one in fidonet it uses my fidonet AKA?

Magicka uses per network netmail bases, rather than one big netmail
base. So you would have a netmail base in your fsxnet conference and it
would use that aka, and one in your fidonet conference and it would use
    that aka.

I had thought someone was working on renegade?

I had a look at the source for forum but the license was terrible so i
slowly backed away from it :) It's probably better to start from scratch
than redoing something old I think, just because people have no
expectations and there is no legal worries.

Do you have any coding skills? Writing a BBS isn't too hard if you break
it down into smaller pieces. The hardest part is integrating the older technologies I think like squish or JAM or FTN etc. If you use squish or
JAM then you can use HPT as a tosser and binkd as a mailer and focus on
    the BBS.

It would be cool to get more people interested in BBS development, at
one point years ago I started a tutorial, though I don't think anyone
was really interested. I find it fun, though I know it's not for
    everyone.

That could be so. I don't know the technical differences between jam and squish.

It would be. It's the lowest common denominator and at times I need it so

Yes, the format is a bit cleaner and it can store 5D addresses, but from a user

don't see any advantages. But maybe I'm missing something.

I started with Squish in the 90s and I still like it, never
    understood the advantages of JAM.

I have always liked Squish bases. That's my preference as a consumer of
message bases. A lot of that is likely simply because I am most familiar
    with them.

One drawback I am aware of with the squish base is that there can be no
more than 8 or 9 threads connected to a message. If more messages arrive
that would have been linked they won't be because the format can't
accomodate more than that. I don't know why but that's the way it was
designed. Maybe that was considered enough, maybe it is enough.

Both Jam and Squish are both quite old formats but I think both still do
what we need them to do. Not fancy by any stretch but gets the task at
hand done for a BBS operator or an FTN node.

    What is better with JAM?

    Peanut butter.. ;)

With *.MSG bases you get 1.msg, 2.msg etc in a directory for each area. I wouldn't even go there.. ;)

In my case using MagiMail or HPT I have support for that format. I have a couple utilities/games that use it, just for sending file attaches so I

I don't think anyone writing doors or utilities today would use that

Been playing around with Warp for several months. Was looking at getting it running to put the board on...but couldn't get the networking stack working. That's changed.

Was watching some You Tube videos on ArcaOS yesterday. 2 hours with the designers & seeing it run made up my mind. May just be a project I goof

I've looked at it too. Very tempting, but have to be realistic for now. When I get a bit more money, I might buy a copy and possibly a system to run it on, instead of using a VM. I'm not sure what software I'd run on it. I could resurrect my old system as a museum piece, or look for something native. But is there any OS/2 netive software in current development?

I used to like having my netmail on my old system passing through as *.msg at an intermediate stage of processing. That was useful for the address manipulation that I did for my GIGO gateway. I could use NetMgr to change address headers on the fly, so othernets using my gateway could address their netmails from a dummy address on the othernet, which got rewritten to the actual (Fidonet) address as the netmail passed through. Incoming gated email would have its source address changed from the Fidonet one to the matching fake address that matched the destination FTN address.

So far, I haven't had that need in recent times.

As for echomail, I'd never use *.msg for that.

Much much worse than that. The stations I was working at were using FAT16

It might be possible, though I imagine it would require some changes. I have eComStation 2.1 or something, but no arca os. I think arca os as various unix utilities ported to it, I know it has RPM and YUM - but that's about all I know ;)

It might be a nice experiment, but I don't have the $ to buy arca os.

Do you really need ArcaOS to port Magicka? If a program runs on eComStation, shouldn't it run on
ArcaOS too? OS/2 was my main OS in the 90s, but I never used eCS or ArcaOS. Tried to install Warp
4.52 in Qemu but I wasn't sucessful (something with the network card, IIRC) and
    then was to lazy
    to figure out the problem.

Btw, gcc 9.2 has been ported to OS/2

I don't know how much has changed between ecomstation and arcaos so I
can't answer that. If it runs on ecomstation then it should, but i don't
know whether the other way around applies.

I saw that gcc 9.2 had been ported, it is also possible to get yum and
rpm onto ecomstation but at present the bootstrap contains too old
version of rpm to bootstrap itself, and I gave up.

I remember that with Telegard. Also remember the guys were were

With good reason! There is a goldbase that I think overcame the

I've looked at it too. Very tempting, but have to be realistic for
now. When I get a bit more money, I might buy a copy and possibly
a system to run it on, instead of using a VM. I'm not sure what
software I'd run on it. I could resurrect my old system as a
museum piece, or look for something native.

There was/is a lot of great FTN software for OS/2. Maximus and squish and Telegard come to mind. Both designed for dial-up although I know a couple
of Maximus BBSs still up and running today on OS/2.

But is there any OS/2 netive software in current development?

The husky and binkd projects run on OS/2 although there was a recent fix
for binkd that still needs to be implemented on the OS/2 side.

GoldED and timEd are available for OS/2 also. Still a viable OS for
BBSing although it's not like it once was.

The GFD (German File Distribution) is still vibrant today, making
    available lots of OS/2 stuff.

If anyone would like a link for those files I have them here along with

to recreate it myself in Virtualbox.

If you would like some help...let me know. When I finally got the networking running in Warp...I felt pretty stupid since I just needed to change some settings after loading up the new networking stack.

Oh, OK. Now I'm not quite sure what sort of system we're talking about. We did start this discussion talking about BBSs that used *.MSG messagebases. :)

I devolved into the file space FAT16 uses...no matter the software you use.

any tests to see if FreeDOS would've worked. Had to have the sound ca in for the system to even initialize...so a several hundred dollar sound card just wasn't lying around to play with.

Yeah, but without reference to the actual file size vs cluster size, it's a bit less meaningful. Sure, we know there's going to be considerable "slack space" (as it was termed back in the day), but how serious that issue depends on the number of files on disk and the average percentage of the file's last cluster used. A *.MSG messagebase represents a worst case example - numerous tiny files, which waste truckloads of diskspace. But of course, that's only one of many possible examples.

Yes, JAM was a real breath of fresh air. I've blown up many incornations of my HMB to prove that! :D The biggest weakness of the HMB was a 16M size limit for the _entire_ messagebase. When your messagebase has close to 200 echos (plus netmail), and many of those areas are fairly active, it makes the messagebase very susceptible to being overloaded. Once you break the 16M limit, ugly things happen, like everything gets scrambled, and weird crossposts happen!

First I want to thanks, Jim Howarth and also Andrew Pamment being I use some of both of their
instructions without these two men I would still be having sleepless nights try ng to figure
    out dosemu & doors.

    My autoexec.bat (in /home/username/.dosemu/drive_c/)

    @echo off

    path z:\bin;z:\gnu;z:\dosemu
    set HELPPATH=z:\help
    set TEMP=c:\tmp
    prompt $P$G
    lredir del d: > nul
    lredir d: linux\fs/home/username/mystic/doors
    unix -e

You want a dosemu.conf for calling the door, I use the same one for calling all my dos doors.

This is my dosemu.conf (in /home/username/mystic/doors/)

    $_cpu = "80486"
    $_cpu_emu = "vm86"
    $_external_char_set = "utf8"

    $_term_updfreq = (8)
    $_layout = "us"
    $_rawkeyboard = (0)
    $_com1 = "virtual"

Create a batch file that we will use to launch doorMUD from DOS.

    @echo off
    D:
    CD \BNU
    BNU /L0=11520
    CD \DMUD
    dmud /N%1 /DD:\TEMP%1
    BNU /U
    D:
    CD \TEMP%1

You can do this with the /DOS argument. For example, I launch dmud with:

    Menu Command: DD
    Args:
    stty cols 80 rows 25 && dosemu -I"serial { com 1 virtual }" "/doors/dmud/runmud.bat" %N /DOS

Note that the above args are all in one line and that your dosemu.conf shouldn't have the COM1 = virtual setting. This makes doing local testing of things much easier.

    Ouch! That's nasty fragmentation!

I achieved it in 1997-1998. Had Linux in production by the end of 1997. :) The boss loved it, because it was legally free software, and I knew
    how to drive it. :)

Never had that chance...but we did get a mail server I recommended set up...along with using shoutcast to stream the signal to repeaters off sight.

By the end of 1998, I had the following running on Linux in the office:

Web server, email gateway (forwarded to internal Exchange server), firewall/true DMZ with screening router and NAT router (both Linux boxes), dialin server for home workers and a branch office, VPN to the Sydney office. All those key systems ran Linux. Sydney also had its own firewall/DMZ setup running Linux. DNS was also hosted in house on the Linux boxes.

The Linux solution was more flexible than anything that preceeded it, and it also put the company on the Internet permanently for the first time.

True. Remember when Squish could be used on Telegard/Renegade...that
    blew my mind away.

Never used anything that used Squish. My systems were RA which ran Hudson, and later, JAM.

My first HDD was a half height 10MB, second was a full height 20M drive.

To think...several months ago I got an 8 TB external drive for my media server for about $150 US. ;)

In 2010...5 years after I left there...a print company accidentally burned
the strip mall to the ground. Don't know what they did after that other than rent more space in a big mall with tons of room. Probably still there.

I got NT4, and later, Windows 2000 certification, because we needed MCPs onsite to be a MCSP.

Another thing I did was setup an old 486 with Hylafax on Linux, fax modem and a spare laser printer as a plain paper fax receiver at a time when plain paper faxes were expensive. Conventional fax paper was expensive for the large volume of faxes that we were receiving at the time. The result was a reliable machine for incoming faxes that was cheap to run, and could handle a very high volume of faxes.

Please don't become the millionaire. I beg of you.

One of the things I learned in my divorce is the difference between AND/OR.
As for this brat...don't care how much money it claims to have...will never become it. On the other hand...I love being here in all the echoes & don't
ever want to be on any twit list. I do have some human DNA...like cats/dogs...but when it kicks either one...that's how it's the person it is now.

Was over on the OS/2 echo this evening & it was mentioned that eventually
there may be OS/2/FreeBSD versions out. Have found version 1.07 in some file areas...but after taking a look at Razor's Domain/2...he's running the most recent version of Telegard for OS/2. It looks great & runs pretty good.

They did find some in places like Argentina & such.

The main thing I'm nagging about it is I have seen some of these episodes...such as the final one with the 2nd Doctor where he's forced to regenerate as a punishment. Nothing on BritBox's site about this...other than check back later. Would like to know if these episodes are the ones they
    erased or holding back on.

I know they sent letters to all of the affiliate TV networks across the world who showed Dr Who back in the day hoping that they still had

Am on the 5th season of MI5/Spooks. They don't have any of the Richard
Armitage episodes showing or the last episodes where Ruth gets killed. You would think owning the shows...they could put them all up there. On the other hand...have heard some of the early Vera episodes are not available either.

Hmm, what BBS software? You didn't say...
    Mystic.
Ahh, OK, that would look primitive compared to 1.12A46. :)

You better believe it. Many of the parts we're used to are not there.
Nice to see what Mystic was & has become. It's almost like it's not the same software.

I bet, Mystic has certainly come a long way even since 1.12 (before the
    lphas).

There's plenty available...as long as you don't mind it not being currently updated.
Yeah I think I'll probably have to live with that. :)

Personally...as long as the BBS is 2K compliant...doesn't really bother me. Add in all the other stuff we now have to make it FDN
functional...not that bad of a choice at all. We get lucky...these
other parts may be more up-to-date than most of the other software
    being used.

Uep, basically as long as it can work under current 2020 conditions, either directly, or with a little help.

Add to that you can run Renegade of any DOS BBS software with some tweaking in DOSBox or DOSEMU.
You'll have fun trying to get DOSEMU working on my BBS system. ;)

It's not Linux...but here's something I tried to use before using
    Mystic: https://tinyurl.com/tks5pa9 . Now...here's something for Linux: https://tinyurl.com/vknrlnd . It's a start of many links I have when I
    was doing research.

You're definitely fixated on Renegade. There's some hoops I wouldn't bother jumping through. If I wanted to put an old DOS BBS online, I'd probably go with ArcaOS. :)

AFAIK Lora 2.xx is the better version, because Lora 3 is a bit unstable (that is what I read. I tried to run it, but failed).

Yes, that was a really good movie. But for quirky, movies like "Last train to Freo" will keep you guessing. :) Coincidentally, I have caught a train to and from Freo (Fremantle), though during the day, rather than near midnight. :)

with a copy of Mad Max I was able to get the "native" language dialog

totally different beast than what is current.

And g00r00 has already had a play with porting parts of the current version of Mystic, and has mplc working under OS/2. :)

OS/2 packages with all-iin-one like Mystic I would be more inclined t run.
My background was RA, and running a RA board under OS/2 DOS would bring back a lot of memories, but native OS/2 would be best. :)

Had a good buddy who loved it back in the day. In terms of running RA...there is EleBBS which may/may not be updated. The file names are looking the same for every version as the OS/2 version. From what I was reading...that would be the closest we can get.

I think it's been years since EleBBS was updated, but still worth taking a
    ook.

BTW...found out how to open the case of the ThinkCentre. Just a laptop
MB with a micro-desktop case. Replaced the 8 GB SSD with a 1 TB laptop drive I had previously played around with RetroPie on. Took forever to
get ArcaOS to format/load the drive...but have done it. Next...may get
an 8 GB stick of memory for $30 US to add to the Samsung stick already
in there. Same memory & with 2 slots...Arca should run anything else I have into the ground.

    That'll be a nice setup! :)

I just spent a lot of hours on it (the past 7 hours or so) and its nowhere near functional, but I can open the configuration and do local logins to the BBS now. When I first got the BBS to compile just about nothing worked, so its been a long road so far.

But now at least from a local login most of the BBS functions work except Mystic Python (although MPL is fine) and the msg/file index readers. I think I have everything else going though including all of the multinode stuff.

Nodespy compiles now too but I haven't even bothered trying that yet.

The hardest parts remain. Besides the general debugging I have to get all of the server, threading, local I/O, SSL and socket code all working in OS2. This isn't small task and will take a lot of research of API and trial and error,
so it may be something I never finish. But for the most part "MIS" is the
only thing remaining to port and get working.

Oh yeah! Found out last night the ThinkCentre has some BIOS updates from 2018...rather than the ones on there from 2013 on the system rig now.
    Cool. :)

They allow you to install it from DOS or Windows...but not exactly sure how they want you to do it. Usually...you can make a bootable DOS stick...but their ISO isn't bootable...unlike the others I've done.

I'm not a big fan of VB. I'm hoping I can run it on real hardware.
But in the short term...you do have an option.
True, it is better than nothing. :)

There is a learning curve...but you run Linux...will be a walk in the park.

Very true. On the other hand...I hate it that this may have given the OPOS & those just like it a reason to keep things locked down. Hope I wrong.
    So do I. :(

Found out the boss is cutting hours of some people...while giving me
more. Plus...they fired 2 supervisors yesterday. One for having people work off the clock & the other for her sister (who used to work there) come in & shooting her mouth off in front of a customer & her big
sister not doing anything about it...so the customer complained.

Hmm, sounds like a good cleaning out, and you're doing well from it.

Yeah I had some quirky issues with VB. Adding a second virtual HDD would crash the interface. I'd have to edit the configuration by hand to add the HDD, then fire up the interface to change the settings that I couldn't easily do by hand.
And it didn't behave the way I wanted with regards to booting. I couldn't stop Boot Manager from booting, even though I had set another virtual HDD as the boot drive.

Our case load has been low so far. Bit of a cockup this morning, with the F1 Grand Prix finally being called off (just announced now). When I got up this morning, it was going ahead, then there was a crisis meeting due at 8:30. Shortly afterwards, the state Premier announced that there would be no spectators allowed, and the F1 organisers could either go ahead without crowds or cancel the event. However, some of the drivers had already left, and the organisers decided to cancel the race altogether, which was the wisest decision. But there's still public health issues, because the crowds were allowed to gether at the gate for several hours.

Give Magicka a try and give your feedback and ideas to Apam. It's not Renegade or VA I know, but it's off the a good start.

I may but right now I'm trying to learn SBBS and it's kind of fun learning!

Do you have any coding skills? Writing a BBS isn't too hard if you break it down into smaller pieces. The hardest part is integrating the older technologies I think like squish or JAM or FTN etc. If you use squish or JAM then you can use HPT as a tosser and binkd as a mailer and focus on the BBS.

Hello apam, better late then never to reply!

No I don't have much of any skills in coding.

But being I built concept cars for GM Engineering give me a surface plate
and flag I can start from the ground up and build a car from start to
finish that drives to a truck and then to the Auto Shows.

My son being around me playing and building computers did follow your path.
I guess we all have some kind of skill set.

And yes your good at yours!

HMB was a 16M size limit for the _entire_ messagebase. When your messagebase has close to 200 echos (plus netmail), and many of those
areas are fairly active, it makes the messagebase very susceptible to being overloaded. Once you break the 16M limit, ugly things happen,
like everything gets scrambled, and weird crossposts happen!

    Hi Vk3jed,

When you say crosspost, what is that?

I'm using qwk packs and offline readers as a bbs user, and I'm seeing errors
on many of the messages in the qwk packs. I'm using multimail 0.52, and terminate 5.0's mail reader. Both systems behave differently.

Multimail shows the message count for an area, but the area index has many messages that have error 0 message for the message line.

In Terminate's (old dos program) the messages from field looks missing and
the messages body runs through the from, and subject. Each message looks to contain several messages.

    Things just looked mangled.

I think vk3jed was speaking of issues that can happen if a hudson message base grows beyond it's limits.

That's an odd one. Both MultiMail and Terminate have nice message readers. Terminate has an excellent point reader built in.

Do you see that with all the QWK packets you download or is that on a particular BBS?

    Hi Vk3jed,

With a corrupt HMB, messages would find their way into the wrong area and even get exported to the wrong echos!

Hmm, I don't recognise any of the symptoms you're describing. :( When I had a corrupt messagebase, I could still download messages into Bluewave (that's what I used back then), but they were all in the wrong areas, almost randomaly scattered throughout the messagebase. Only fix was to delete the messagebase and start again. I can't recall if multiple message bodies ended up with the one header or anything weird like that, it was a very long time ago!

Anyway, looks like you have some form of corruption somewhere.

It could be something to do with the QWK export settings from the hosting BBS.

Perhaps a missing CONTROL.DAT or incorrect QWKE setting?

Multimail should support QWKE just fine. Not sure about Terminate. Back when I used Terminate it was just a comm program.

I know the wrong QWK settings on the BBS end cause packets to fail to open in Multimail. Haven't seen that sort of corruption though.

Messages get posted to the wrong area. This happens if the corruption happens between new messages getting posted and them getting scanned for forwarding to other BBSs. Because the headers are all screwed up, they get sent to the wrong echo.
