• Netrunner and CARRIER DROPPED in win32

From Analog@21:2/123 to All on Sat Nov 23 14:19:26 2019
    Fellows,

I'm trying to get Netrunner 1.02 to run in Windows 7/32. All my other doors fire up just fine but Netrunner is not fossil aware. I'm using netfoss which seems to not work for non fossil-aware doors. I tried their I/O redirect but
no success. Does anyone have this game running in Win32 with netfoss? Or some other Windows 7 way?

    Please share setup.

    Cheers,
    Analog

Netrunner is a terminal program, not a door game. It's what I used before switching to SyncTERM.

Not so. There's also a door from the 90s by the same name.

Yep. I am running it under DOS / OS/2 on my GT Power BBS.

To be fair this is sort of expected when you use names from pop culture or literature.

Yeah, It's hard to come up with an original name for anything these
    days.

One thing I found was funny, when I started making Magicka I was using
WWIV and didn't really put a lot of thought in the name - there was a
BBS called Mysteria Majicka (I think it's an Alistair Crowley book)
which suggested I stole the name from them.... anyway, a little while
after I joined FSXnet and learned of ENiGMA 1/2... My original BBS in
the 90s was called Enigma BBS (Not saying Nu stole my name, it's very
unlikely he would have known about a small 90s bbs in Toowoomba, QLD
lol) but funny nothing is really original anymore.

Hah, I don't remember you mentioning that before (not that you didn't!). Yeah, can't say I knew if your BBS back then. I think there are a couple other boards
named Enigma Something Something as well. Around '95 was the first version of ENiGMA 1/2 which was a re-write of one I called ASS-BBS (Advanced SyStem... heh.), both in Pascal. That version of enig never got completed, so I just recycled the name when I did this one. Besides being "leet speak" ish, the letter style mimicked my BBS name that I had in the 90's: DEMENTiA

Hehe, yeah, it's funny how different people come up with the same ideas independently. Though, my BBS was later than 95 so perhaps I did indeed
    steal the name from you!

I'm just now writing a bbs system called dementia :P (J/K)

Another thing, my cauldron bubbling that I use here and there, looks
very similar to the mageia (linux distribution) logo.

So, looks like I'm the one going around stealing ideas :/ lol, not intentionally but seems that way.

    Alright,

So there was no easy way to get Netrunner working without some magic. So what
I did was install a pair of virtual serial ports. Then I wrote a c++ intercepter that sits between Mystic and the door. I pass Mystic's Winsock handle in to use for my socket. Then I catch the other side of the serial
port pair. This allows me to redirect socket to serial and serial to socket that looks a lot like the Linux tty redirector for W32.

    Mystic Winsock <-> intercepter <-> Serial 1 <-> Serial 2 <-> Netrunner Input

The intercepter launches the door passed to it in the command line and maintains the Handle to ensure when the door is closed, all the handles and ports are disposed of before returning to the BBS.

    Cheers,

This is awesome, Would you be open to sharing this?

I tried to get this game running for quite a while and finally gave up. I
still have all the files sitting there waiting for me though, I could never bring myself to delete the door directory..

This game and and another, Lords of Cyberspace (written for Major BBS) are
my two white whales you could say. =]

Yeah sure. There are a few problems though. Since you have to open a serial port (virtual) before you can run the game, you have to book keep what serial ports are in use. The easiest way to do this is install one serial pair for each node. For my 5 nodes, I paired them COM1/COM6, COM2/COM7, etc.. Then I just pass in the node for the process (game) serial, e.g., 1-5 and the node
+5 for the link serial. However, Mystic's drop file always specifies COM1 in DOOR.SYS regardless of the node. To overcome this, you'll need SED for Win32. You'll do something like sed 's/COM1/COM<NODENUM>/g' on DOOR.SYS before you call the process and overwrite the comport to the correct node. That is
unless your BBS software does this for you.

I'm not sure you want to deal with compiling, so I will post both the source and EXE bundled with some readme.txt soon to deadbeatz/Tutorials file area.

    Cheers,

Netrunner is a terminal program, not a door game. It's what I used before switching to SyncTERM.
I too switched to SyncTERM also fulltime, I used to use Netrunner, but I
would find that I would be responding to a fidonet message some of them were quite large in the length and in scope, then all of a sudden I would experienced that the keyboard would lock up, nothing I could do but try to wait until it cleared up, (of which never occurred ever) Just me with the wishful thinking, because of the length of the message. Then I would have to start
    all over again.
This was so incredibly frustrating which led me to look for a replacement.

I found SyncTERM by visiting the Telnet BBS list, I have been using SyncTERM ever since and have not had any problem at all. It's so nice to hammer out a message and be able to have the ability to complete my thought and
successfully safe it, although I drive certain people with opposite views within the echo crazy.
