• BBS Auto List Project

From xqtr@21:1/111 to All on Fri Jan 4 12:43:34 2019
I am making a new app that will collect data for BBSes from a JAM base and create a valid list of BBSes.

Each BBS have to upload a specific file to a JAM base (ex. BOT echomail).
This file contains info about the bbs and also an ANSI file, as a flyer/advertisement for the BBS.

The program when will be executed, it will search that JAM base for "info files" and build the list, which the user can see.

I have built an utility to create this "info file" and because i want some traffic to test the app, i hope that some of you will help, by using it and creating some traffic.

Use the utility to create the info file.
The utility will create an Ascii85 text file
Upload this file once/per day. This way the program will know that your BBS
is "alive". So the list will be 100% accurate on its data.

    The utility is at: https://github.com/xqtr/xBBSList
There you will find also two other utilities that un/compress and de/encode a file to the ascii85 format. This way you can also examine the exported file,
in case you are wondering what data contains.

If there is some traffic, i will be able to test the main app, which do the collection/sorting thing and it will be released as soon as possible.

    Thank you.

Ok, so I made the output.asc, which area should I post it (I think
FSX_DAT?) also, what should be the subject / to / from etc?

First of all thanks that you want to help :)

I think we should use FSX_DAT. For now the message has to have a subject like this: bbs_ping_project
No spaces or anything else. But in the future we can rename it something other, cause i don't like it too much :)

No worries, though it might take a little while before I can post it, my

I sure do... but my problem is, that i can't find a 100% working DOOR library for pascal. I have tested 3-4 of them, but all of them had issues. The only "good" lib i know, is ODoor but, unfortunately for me, its for C language.

Quick question: for this utility it doesn't matter I don't run JAM base
correct? Since I could run the utility and post it daily in my Ezycom
BBS? I do also run MagickaBBS which uses JAM though.

The specific utility just creates a text file... you can post it in any way
you like. But the main program i am making, will use only JAM bases to search for these files. So BBSes who use another format (ex. sqlite), want be
    possible to use it.

    Suggestions

    - offer a way so that previously created output.asc can be loaded and updated using the autolist creator

    - perhaps offer a way to change the name of the file being saved so multiple bbs data/lists can be created from the same system e.g agency.asc and crypto.asc ?

    - BBS > System .... i struggled to set a creation date :) also wondered about the tags and the risk that you might get entries like fsxNet, fsxnet, Fsxnet and so on... perhaps a list of some known names to select from if you can be bothered adding that?

    - Admin ... had trouble with 'hours' again kinda hard to know what to load there

    - System ... all seemed fine there, but a thought occurs, as you step through the fields perhaps the software should offer a prompt at the bottom of the screen below the ---- line and above 'esc to go back' that explains the field being selected or gives a brief example, something like Mystic -cfg does as
    you step though the fields?

    - Networks .. all good, but again perhaps offer a list for folks to select known networks from?

    - Distros - I kinda struggled to know what this would be for, is it like the bbs carries Blocktronics, etc.

    - Flyer - didn't add this , does it need to be ans and if so how big/small, could it be .txt or .acs files also?

    Hope this helps

    Best, Paul

Yeap... will do. I thought it too, after making too many files/entries for the testing... :? :)

The date is in dd/mm/yy format. Perhaps i will add a help info/suggestion on the bottom of the screen as you said.

Its impossible to know how the user will write this down FSXNet or Fsxnet for example. I would like to make a list because new networks are created and others are closing down. I don't want to exclude some or need to update each time there is a new or another closed. All the fields are not mandatory and
can be filled out, in whatever way the user/sysop wants. The data will be presented in a way that it doesn't matter. You can see an example at my bbs in the Various/Auto List section.

    - Flyer - didn't add this , does it need to be ans and if so how big/small, could it be .txt or .acs files also?

It can be an ANSI (i have some trouble, but i think i will fix it) or simple TEXT/ASC. The size depends on the final compress/encoded file. If i am not mistaken a jam msg can be about 50-80kbs... so if the compressed file that is beeing created by the program is less, there is no problem in that. But less
is better. Perhaps i'll put a restriction not to flood the network with big msgs.

Thank you for the suggestions Paul. You are correct in all of them and i will implement them. :)

You will also find the viewer program which will collect the data, build the database and display it, so the project its allmost complete. For sure it will need some debugging and after its stabilized i will included options to download the lists.

More info included in the sysop.txt file.
