• Moving away from github

From apam@21:1/125 to All on Tue Jun 5 14:37:24 2018
    Hi

Given the uncertainty of what may or may not happen to github, I've
decided to move my Magicka git repositories to my own server. This way I
can easily do daily backups of repositories.

You can view the repositories in your web browser here:

    http://git.magickabbs.com/cgit/

If you're using Magicka and want to continue getting updates, you will
need to point your git repositories to a new url.

    FIRST BACKUP YOUR BBS

To do this, enter the MagickaBBS directory and enter the following
    command:

    git remote set-url origin git://git.magickabbs.com/MagickaBBS

If you're using v0.11-alpha, also run these commands:

    git pull
    git submodule sync

I'll update the documentation throughout the week.

    Hello Apam,

wise decision. I guess there will be quite a lot of similar actions like
    Yours and mine.

Whatever watch the #movingthegitlab hashtag on twitter. There is quite much more people now talking about the gitlab acquire by M$FT.

Good luck and thanks for all the work You're providing to the community.

    Best regards

I think a lot of people lost faith in sourceforge but there may be a resurgence in light of recent events at github.

I don't want to come off as a jerk, but I'm very confused by some of the people
moving from GitHub based on the recent announcement.

    * They are still held by a separate company. MS is really just the parent.
    * No changes have been announced or made.
    * The biggest one: Git is decentralized. That's the entire point. You can "move" Git anywhere. A git repo on box A or server B are no differnet than each
other - none of them are an authority/etc. You can push/pull from multiple repos natively as is... cuz again, that's the point of Git :D

To be honest, I have been thinking about moving away from git hub for a
while. I had gitlab set up on my server a while back but it was a bit to bloated for my liking. I wanted something I could host private repos on
as well as public and didn't have to pay more for.

Yeah, I could push to several remotes, including github, but last time I
tried that with gitlab / github it didn't work with all my tools, and one
    ended up getting stale.

I'm not really a fan of source forge. I don't like how many ads they have on their pages, from the user standpoint...

I haven't moved away from GitHub. I only have a few repos on there though. I also use BitBucket, as their free account allows for private repos. :)
