I was playing with the idea of VNC, but I think it takes too much in resources to use it really. And I always seem to break it.

I'm curious what the best solution is for remote gui access in linux... RDP works sweet on Windows, nice and zippy. VNC works *ok* on my OSX
systems, but of course it is laggy compared to RDP. I haven't tried either
on ubuntu yet though, although I think there are solutions for both
protocols. I was wondering if it might be easier just to ssh in and forward the entire desktop session over to a local X11 server like xquartz.

best solution is to start mystic with either the mis script that is circling around, of ddtelnetd. for viewing a ssh session using nodespy.

I was actually thinking like a step back out of the matrix hehe.. I've
got all my BBS stuff running in multiple VirtualBox installations on a linux system. I figured it would be nice and portable that way in case I ever need to change hardware, plus I can take multiple snapshots, and backup the
    systems pretty easily.

VNC always seems flakey to me.

Have you tried xrdp yet? It's relatively easy to set up, and I use it at work as a reliable way to get to my desktop machine from our presentation machines in meeting rooms. It is also relatively ligth-weight, so things stay zippy.

Since it is based on the RDP protocol, you can use the standard Windows
remote desktop client, or rdesktop/freedesktop on Linux. I like to use
Remmina as the client from my Ubuntu-based desktop, because it has great session management built in.

I will check that out on a vm tomorrow for sure. I do like the RDP protocol more than VNC.. I just need to test it out on a vm before
installing on my "production" BBS linux system. It's always so much easier
to install something on linux vs undo that installation =)

If you have a windows desktop, I would recommend using a program called MobaXTerm. You run it, open a terminal, ssh to your linux box, and then you can run any X app you want. It will be exported to your windows desktop. I frequently do this to run dosbox on the BBS headless instance on AWS EC2.

    It's free for home use.

Yes, I'm back on the nets. I've discovered that I genuinely like my message-reading interface much more than I like in many of the BBSes. Plus I don't always have the time to call out to the different BBSes like I would like. It's just easier to read them all on Cyberia. I'll still make an
effort to call out to other BBSes tho.

Fair enough, and regardless of how you opt to engage with them - it's great
to have you here and involved in them :)

Hope the move went well and you're setting in to the new role well.
