From m00p@21:1/160 to All on Thu Mar 1 20:35:50 2018
    Hi everyone,

I experienced a MAJOR crash before christmas. My HDD (ThunderDrive) broke,
and i lost my entire BBS. I KNOW i should have backup, but for some weird reason i never did a backup of my BBS.

Luckily i had some of the artwork saved, but no messages and no "warez" where saved. Since the entire HDD broke i had to buy a new one, but instead of
gettig a new SCSI drive, i choose to buy an SCSI2SD adapter, and use an SD
card solution instead. This would also solve my problem with the backups
becuse its super easy to do backup with the SD card.

Anyway, i want to welcome everyone to call my board, its running on a
Commodore 128 (in 64 mode), with a ThunderDrive as storage... 9600 baud Swiftlink... Please use CGterm to connect! Do not use CGterm or any other
    ANSI based program.

    So sorry to hear this.

With bandwidth and storage so cheap these days (and BBSs in general being relatively small amounts of data) I wonder if there's any merit into someone providing offsite backup services targetted to BBS operators.

I use spideroak for this, I get 150Gb for $5 a month.. I use less than
1Gb for my BBS, but it does incremental backups so it grows over time.

I'm not sure how a backup provider targeting BBSes would be different,
perhaps smaller disk space for a cheaper price?

The problem in my case was that i had to open up the HDD case to my ThunderDrive, get the SCSI drive out, and then connect it to my computer and showhow make an entire clone of the disk.

With the SD solution this is easier, and ofc it can be stored in the cloud afterwards. The Commodore 64 doesnt have an TCP stack, so no way to store something in the cloud automatically :(

Yes, the commodore 64 doesnt use ANSI by default. My BBS uses PETSCII and you cannot use ANSI enabled clients for this, it will look like SHIT. CGterm also have Punter and Xmodem support. It also allows you to mount an .d64-file for download/upload.

So, please use CGterm (or an native commodore machine when connecting)

Will try and check this out soon

For a caller with a linux system, what terminal program would you
recommend? I tried syncterm which, I suspect, is one of those "ANSI based programs" that I should not have used. :)

    Thanks!

I use backblaze b2 storage for my backups. The first 10 gigs are free and
then after that it's dirt cheap. Half a cent per gig per month. Every morning the bbs gets zipped up and backed up automatically. I also have it sync all
my file directories. I do have to manually shut down and back up my windows VM, so that gets done about once a month when I remember to do it.

I think CGterm works for Linux too, download it here: https://paradroid.automac.se/cgterm/

It works for Windows, OSX, Linux..

    Thanks!
