• BinkIt not connecting to all hosts during polls

From Nightfox@1:103/705 to All on Sat May 18 12:16:23 2019
    Hi all,

I've been using BinkIt for FTN networks for the past several months or so. I recently added FSXNet to my BBS, and it seems BinkIt isn't always connecting to
every FTN host when the BINKPOLL event executes. I have set it up according to
the BinkIt page on the Synchronet wiki. It seems to only connect to the appropriate FTN host when there's an outgoign message. I'm not sure what might
be misconfigured.. Has anyone had this happen before? I'd like to make sure it polls and downloads new messages from the hosts regularly.

The BINKOUT event will only poll nodes who have mail waiting to go.

The BINKPOLL event will poll nodes regardless if they have mail waiting or not if BinkpPoll is set to true in the nodes section of sbbsecho.ini for that link.

if you want to force a connection to a remote system even if there's no waiting mail for them, make sure you set BinkpPoll=true in sbbsecho.ini... that's the Poll option in each linked system's Binkp Settings in echocfg...

Ah, I must have missed the BinkpPoll setting. I have set it to true for the nodes I want to poll, and it looks like that worked. Thanks.

If that's the proper way, then how would my BBS download new messages from the hub? Would the hub have to be set up to crash-poll mine when there are
new (outgoing?) messages at the hub?

i think it was Al that explained the difference between BINKPOLL and BINKOUT... if not it is basically like this...

BINKPOLL is for scheduled outbound connections to certain
selected systems and to deliver still waiting outbound FTN
mail. both except for those systems marked HOLD.

BINKOUT is for all-the-time-any-time delivery of any/all
waiting outbound FTN mail except to those systems marked
    HOLD.

my system has BINKPOLL configured but it is not used by anything here... all FTN mail is attempted to be delivered immediately after it is processed via BINKOUT... i might have one system that i have set to HOLD because i cannot connect to their mailer for some reason... not sure if it is a firewall issue (eg: no port forward) or what but they do connect here (via the BINKP service) and are able to pull their waiting mail in a timely fashion... in any case, my system is basically doing "crashme/crashyou" with all linked systems...

You could use task scheduler or cron to run "jsexec binkit.js -l
<nodenum>" once an hour or so. Or, you could create a timed event in
    Synchronet to do that.

How do you have the BinkpPoll value set for your linked-nodes in ctrl/sbbsecho.ini?

It was false. I changed it to true and now it seems to be connecting to the linked nodes during the BINKPOLL event.

The BINKPOLL event will poll nodes regardless if they have mail waiting
    or
not if BinkpPoll is set to true in the nodes section of sbbsecho.ini for that link.

I set BinkpPoll to true for the nodes I want to poll and it's now connecting to
them every time for the BINKPOLL event.

Yep, I don't think you'll be disappointed by your move to BinkIT.. :)

Yeah, I was using Radius and was interested in moving to BinkIT because it's more integrated with Synchronet. Also, because it's written in Synchronet's JavaScript, if I ever decide to move my Synchronet BBS from Windows to Linux, BinkIT will run there too.
