• A couple of minor issues with remote linux Synchronet server

From kmelillo@1:103/705 to All on Fri Apr 5 18:15:43 2019
    Good afternoon,
I currently have Synchronet running via linux, and hosted remotely. Everything
works as expected. I am able to log in, and make any changes necessary, recycle, and everything works... BUT....

For ANSI menus, and screens: I have to convert the acs to ans, download the ans, use PabloDraw, or TheDraw to edit these, upload the ansi, then reconvert to asc. Is there a way to make this easier? I am thinking a door based ANSI editor, with a few scripts to convert and move these files where needed. Does anyone currently do something like this?

For changes in System Config: Change a file area, add a message base, add a door... These do not take effect unless I recycle the board. Any way around this?

    Thank you for your time.

Are you able to remote desktop to the machine? If you can, that would make the
process easier. Alternately, I remember there being a remote shell door that think was included with Synchronet, or in the CVS, though I don't remember offhand what it was called. Something like that could give you remote shell access via Synchronet. But at the same time, could you SSH into your remote Linux machine hosting your BBS?

    Not that I know of.

PabloDraw can directly edit files in Ctrl-A format (no conversion to/from ANSI is necessary). Just make sure you choose "Ctrl-A" in the format selection box when opening the file(s). If you made your Synchronet text directory available over a network share (NFS, CIFS/SMB, even FTP), you could run PabloDraw remotely but have the files stored on the server.

    I am thinking a door
based ANSI editor, with a few scripts to convert and move these files where needed. Does anyone currently do something like this?

No. The terminal server should automatically recycle however when it can (e.g. all nodes are either offline or waiting for connection).

As far as I know, you must do that. Also be sure to change the file owner to bbsowner (since I know I set you up). You can easily do that in smc with option
    9...

I have full access to the machine via SSH... I can get everything on there, and working properly. But I can not help but think there is an wasier way. An
ANSI editor/viewer via a door... and a few scripts to change the ANS files to ASC. Something to help me avoid doing all the work locally, then having to transfer it over, then convert it, and move it into the proper directories.

A long form door text editor would be good as well, so I can edit baja src files... although I suppose nano\vi would work as doors.. although I have not
    tried these.

Has anyone done anything interesting in this area? It's not really customization... it's more like streamlining...

Yes nano/vi work as doors, though you would have to be careful that users didnt
trash files they were not supposed to...

I use a CIFS/SMB share (via Samba on Linux), but you can do the same with FTP. I think some clients like FileZilla have a simple "edit file" option which will
transfer the file to your system, launch your editor (e.g. PabloDraw) and then send the result back to the server, seemlessly.

My idea was that if you can connect to the machine via SSH or GUI remote desktop, you should be able to run an ANSI editor on that machine so you don't have to transfer files back and forth. PabloDraw, for instance, is available for Linux..
