• Replying to Fidonet messages

    From Ace@1:103/705 to All on Sun Mar 24 18:55:26 2019
    Howdy All;

    I noticed that I am unable to reply to FidoNet style messages. Every single Network i have setup, when I try to reply to a message, it says "User not found". I've poured over the settings and I'm stumped. Any ideas?

    my eWAG is your message area settings do not indicate the area is a networked area...

    I i'm 99% positive you are correct. All of my fido bases were set that way. Thank you so much

    Are you referring to a "reply in mail" command? What command key exactly from what prompt? Are you sure you've configured the message area as being FidoNet-networked?

    A copy/paste of the message header and the exact error message would be helpful.

    So I just had a similar issue crop up this morning, a user sent me a couple e-mails from his regular e-mail account. When I tried to reply to them, it came
    up "user not found". I quit out of the email section to start looking into it, and when I went back, the emails were no longer visible in my inbox.

    I noticed a few messages sent to him in dovenet in the past day or so had no header information, and I can't seem to generate/repair it with fixsmb or smbutil. I'm not sure if they were imported like that or not.

    I checked his user account via uedit, and nothing looked corrupted, so I'm not really sure what's going on. I haven't had time to dig through logs yet. I know I've had a few "out of memory" errors pop up recently, one causing the entire BBS to crash (I have no idea if he was online or not at the time).

    Anyway, I thought I'd chime in, in case it's related.

    It's gotten worse, and it's happening to messages that are sent to me as well,
    now. When I first read the message, the header is fine. However, if I view the message list using DDMessageReader (M), the message is just a number with a blank line, and the header looks like the above image i posted. (just with the appropriate text). I managed to reply to one yesterday by entering the proper To: and Subject lines.

    The "Missing Message-IDs" line up with the number of messages that are missing header information, which makes sense.

    I really haven't had much time to look into it, I had considered just blowing the entire messagebase away and resetting my QWK account's pointers on VERT to re-import them, but it's not urgent. I'm happy to grab any data if you want to investigate.

    If you disable DDMessageReader, do you still have an issue?

    Message Message-IDs should not be a big deal.

    The "Missing Message-IDs" line up with the number of messages that are missing header information, which makes sense.

    Well it's certainly possible to import messages without message-IDs. Perhaps if
    you ran "chksmb -e" you'd see a pattern with the messages that are missing message-IDs and identify the cause. In any case, it's not a fatal issue normally.

    I really haven't had much time to look into it, I had considered just blowing the entire messagebase away and resetting my QWK account's pointers on VERT to re-import them, but it's not urgent. I'm happy to grab any data if you want to investigate.

    The 'chksmb -e' output should be enlightening. But like DDMessageReader should also be able to gracefully handle that situation. It's not terribly uncommon to
    import messages without Message-IDs.
