• Synchonet on a Synology

From Ennev@1:103/705 to All on Thu Apr 7 14:25:59 2022
Yeah just got a Synology 920+ a few months ago. At first, it was just to consolidate my files. But the thing can also run VMs.

Right now, my BBS runs on a VM on a Proxmox setup that I had for years, for the hardware is getting old. BTW the BBS is running on Ubuntu server 20.04.4 LTS

So I was just wondering, has anybody had experience running VMs on these, reliability and stuff?

Looks like the 920+ only has a 4-core Celeron CPU. It should be fine for running Synchronet in a VM, but I wouldn't expect to be able to do much else.

If you get a few users online at the same time running doors over DOSEMU or something, it might struggle.

other than that, I don't think you'll have any issues.

Aren't Synology NASes fun? I picked up a DS1010 a year ago, finding lots of uses for it.

The newer ones have a docker engine, don't they? There are Synchronet
docker containers out there, seems like a great way to consolidate the apps and storage in one unit.

I'll be honest, after running Synology for over 10 years, I have switched to Unraid and am much happier. Synology was good, and their user interface was great, but you can build an Unraid server for way less $$, and it's as just reliable.

I thought a dedicated NAS was out of my price range, but I found this thing for $110, no drives. I had a bunch of 2TB drives lying around that I made
into a 7.2 GB SHR-1 array, and I've been pleased with it.

My other choice was Unraid on an old desktop of mine. If I get my hands on some commodity hardware in the near future, Unraid it'll be.

It does run containers, and I do have some running. I haven't checked for Synchronet. That also could be an approach. I know it's just a 4 core Intel Celeron J4125, but my BBS is running on a Core 2 Duo in a VM, and the machine is basically idling, so I feel it's more than enough power. The only big door I'm Running is actually a Tradewars game server also in its own VM, and also, even with a lot of players logged in, it's not struggling at all.

So I guess when I have a few days off, I might try.

If you're using the BBS.io image, will be making some changes this
weekend to update the build and run scripts... there's a sample docker-compose.yml you can use to get started with. It doesn't take
    much overhead for Synchronet.

If you wanted to run TWGS in a container, that gets a bit harder, You basically have to have a GUI with WINE, there's a sample that I built to
try it, which seems to work okay... but it's less smooth, you basically connect over VNC to that.

The Celeron J4125 should be more than enough, would suggest 4gb ram on
the system as a minimum for running docker... you can use less, but will
need swap sometimes, and not recommended.
