• Relay Netmail

From Sys64738@1:103/705 to All on Wed Oct 27 13:09:28 2021
Trying to set up my standard internet email client (BlueMail) to use to relay email through my BBS. I did some research and managed to configure it so that I no longer get the "550 RELAY NOT ALLOWED" message.

However, now I get a "1144 SMTP !ILLEGAL RELAY ATTEMPT" error that I can't seem to get around. I searched (Googled) this error and can't find anywhere that addresses it. Have I stumbled onto new ground or do I just really suck at research?

Your mail client needs to authenticate with the mail server using your BBS user account (name and password) before you can relay mail through it.

I guess I'll have to look at it more closely.

I assumed that was part of the handshake process when the initial transmissikn was received.

I figured it out. It was the "Allowed Relay List" settings that had it stifled. Issue resolved.

If you had to modify add your client's IP address or hostname to "Allowed Relay List", then your mail client is not authenticating via SMTP. If your client authenticates with your BBS username and password, then it doesn't matter what IP address or hostname the client has connected from - you'll be able to relay mail.

Are you setup to use your username/password to authenticate for sending
    email?

Do a straight telnet to your smtp port on your bbs, general port is 25
(for inbound), submission port is 587, and the smtps port is 465
(deprecated) iirc. You should check all of them to ensure you can
connect from the outside, and that your router/firewall is forwarding
    those connections.

You may want to use Sengrid, Mailgun, Amazon SES or similar to relay
your outbound mail with higher delivery rates... I've been using
Sendgrid, and that's worked pretty well for me, the free tier is likely enough. IIRC, you can also use vert.synchro.net for relayed in/out if
you're usng .synchro.net dyndns and talk to Rob if you are being blocked
on default ports and want to relay in/out.
