So I am totally lost with Fidonet here. I managed to get fsxNet up and running with relative ease, but this Fidonet stuff is throwing me for a loop. They assigned me a node number, but that was about it. Have no
    ideas
where to pull echoes from, nodelists, etc. anything.

I think this may be a good place to start: http://wiki.synchro.net/network:fidonet

Also you want to make sure you read and re-read the policy4 document and ensure
you are completly familar with it.
    https://www.fidonet.org/policy4.txt

Not even 100% sure how having Fidonet and fsxNet together won't clobber one another (assuming the zones keep that all straighted out?)

Anyone out there willing to help understand where to go from here?

To be fair, back in the 80s and 90s this whole Fidonet thing was
    confusing
    as well!

I had my board connected to FidoNet back in the late 90s but I haven't had a chance to get around to setting it up again, I'm hoping to do that in the near future.

why not ask jeff smith if he has any recommendations? which ever net you were placed in you'll need to poll its /0 at least once a week to pick up any possible routed netmail waiting there...

as for a feed, you are free to get your echos and FDNs from any system you can set up an agreement with... i offered (and did) help to get you pointed in the right direction to get a number and i'll also offer to provide you a feed of echos and FDNs... you have my email address ;)

assuming that you keep them separated by groups, you should not have any problems...

    sure :)

i've been in fidonet since about a year (i think) before policy 4 was presented and adopted... it was only confusing then because the software wasn't as nicely put together as today's solutions... but we were also trying to use quickBBS tools with remoteaccess and were apparently missing something that another new tool rectified :)

I'm pretty much past the technical point, rather more Fido-specific issues -- the main one being the echo feeds, obtaining them, etc. No real docs on those.

The person who assigned your node number should be able to help with some of that. Typically, the net coordinator can get you set up with a file and echo feed.

Do you have a temporary nodelist to work with? There are nodelist file echoes I'd recommend once you learn your file feed info to connect to the NODELIST echo. You'll get an updated echo every week.

Fidonet used to use weekly DIFF files using the NODEDIFF echo, but that's mostly irrelevant now. It's easier to pull a full list than try and update a list.

Not even 100% sure how having Fidonet and fsxNet together won't clobber

I'm using Synchronet and Binkit, and have several networks configured. You need
to put the node numbers into SCFG, and specify the correct network address when
    configuring the message areas.

You can use the same areas.bbs file, just add the Fido echoes with the correct uplink.

There are a bunch of Fidonet sysops here, ask away!

    Hope this helps.

You may want to try browsing through the nodelist file because you can see who your zone "leader" bbs is and also your hub "leader" bbs is within the host fil
And you can spend some time on those boards. I'm sure they would be ready and willing to help you out.

They should have let you know who your hub was, so you can at least pick up routed netmail. Most Fidonet nodes will also pick up echomail there, though you can pick up echomail from any Fido node you like.

No dramas. Different zones, and if you use 5D addressing, different domains as
    well.

Anyone out there willing to help understand where to go from here?

To be fair, back in the 80s and 90s this whole Fidonet thing was

You need to find out where your main feed (for netmail) will be. I'm surprised
that information wasn't given to you.

Good point, that is how I sussed out my local NC (and then applied via the traditional "Policy 4" method. :) ).

i think you mean host instead of hub... the only official hub in FTN is within a net and generally then only in very large nets... it plays like a mini-host... complete with hub-segs and all... like the host, it is not required to do anything other than to make routed netmail available to the destination system...

Most Fidonet nodes will also pick up echomail there, though you can
pick up echomail from any Fido node you like.

true but i would probably say many instead of most...
