• Long File Names in xfer section

From nolageek@1:103/705 to All on Sat Oct 24 15:02:06 2020
I just imported a bunch of files with long filenames into a file area using a FILES.BBS. I notice that this time none of them are showing as online and the filenames are kind of messed up.

For example - some of my directories files are behaving as I expected and are showing as on-line:

    AliensMovieScript.txt is showing as ALIENS~1.TXT

The ones I just imported, are showing offline, and the long filenames are messed up:

    DeadMeatPodCastEpisode1.mp3 is showing as DeadMead.Pod

I've reimported several times and it's the same thing each time,

Maybe 2 weeks ago? Only other change I've made other than updating to latest build is moving my podcast transfer areas from c: to p: (which is a USB drive)

Maybe that's it then: a different file system used on the USB drive. I think USB drives often use exFAT while hard-disks and SSDs are usually NTFS (on Windows). exFAT does not support support short filenames: http://www.on-time.com/rtos-32-docs/rtfiles-32/programming-manual/exfat/benefit s-of-the-file-system.htm

But if you use addfiles with the SSDs, it works as expected? It certainly sounds like a file system issue. In any case, the whole short/long filename thing is going to be addressed in a future Synchronet release. But in the mean time, you need to either use short filenames or use an OS/filesystem combo that supports the storage of both long and shortfilenames for each file (e.g. NTFS on Windows).
