• Active Message Networks?

From Hatton@1:103/705 to All on Sat Aug 15 20:50:00 2020
Hey all, is there a list/link/source somewhere that identifies all
of the currently active message networks that we can join?

I tried the G and it gave me some dead links and not much more.

    Thanks!
    Hatton

    Try running ftp-setup.js
It uses this file as this source data: http://cvs.synchro.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/exec/init-fidonet.ini?view=markup

Are iLink (zone 454), JustaXnet (zone 510), UnknownNet (zone 666), Zeronet (zone 999), and Whispernet (zone 316) no longer extant?

They're ones I have webpages saved for and which seemed to exist semi-recently.

    Did some digging:

Whispernet appears extant but fairly low-traffic. Echolist is online and seems current, but is in a zip file.

The last public echolist for Zeronet is dated 2002; I've not really pursued that further. Clearly a working website is a bad indicator of signs of life.

Unknownnet may be defunct with the demise of Tiny's BBS last year. I can't find an echolist.

Ilink is extant but extremely low-traffic, with apparently at least 75% of its echoes devoid of traffic in the last two years. There appears to be an echolist in a zip file somewhere, but meh. I read their new-user docs and policy stuff, and clearly they're not even trying, anymore.

JustaXnet is allegedly alive; a stats post claims 151 posts in July 2020 across all echoes. Cannot find an echolist, though. Might be one on Kofo BBS' website, if/when it's up. (It's not, for me, right now.)

    network now.

I would disagree with the not trying. I do agree that many of the echos
are dead, but a few of them (general chat as an example) have daily,
    non-robot traffic.

I am a hub on ILink and have a current NA file. I do not know where it
would be available for WWW download, but I would be willing to email it to
DM or whoever wants to see it?

I've grabbed a few things from his system in the last few months, so he'd seem to be online again. Didn't know he was down, but he seems someone worth supporting as that system is an absolute goldmine when you're looking for obscure bbs related files.

Thanks, but the reason I asked was for potential inclusion of the networks in question in the init-fidonet.ini file where a web-downloadable echolist is *very* helpful in automating the sysop configuration of a Synchronet system for any particular network.
Take a look at the existing examples in http://cvs.synchro.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/exec/init-fidonet.ini?view=markup

    find
    an echolist.

I think he is back online but don't know about the network.

Oof, he is back online, but switched ports, hence my not being able to connect. :/

I'll recreate my account there later and see if there's a nodelist/info/signs of life for the network.

disagree with the not trying. I do agree that many of the echos
are dead, but a few of them (general chat as an example) have daily, non-robot traffic.

They've got 80-ish echoes, about half of which theoretically have hosts, and at least half of *those* have no traffic in two years, as far as I can tell. Their website may not have been updated this century. Other nets advertise at least sporadically in, e.g. alt.bbs.ads--but not Ilink, as far as I can tell.

So, they might be trying, but... not very hard.

    ILink advertises in FIDO Othernets.
