• Changing User #1

From Hatton@1:103/705 to All on Fri Aug 14 13:38:00 2020
Is it possible to change all of the settings for the initial User #1 login?

Some background - this board (still being set up) is a passion project of three
friends that ran boards when modems ruled the POTS lines. I've been working through most of the setup myself and did the intial build and config. I also was the first user to register.

Looking at the setup, we can only set one Sysop name so we agreed on
"Tres Amigos" (I'll wait while everyone goes through the motions). Since this doesn't agree with the Alias/Handle of user #1 I'm getting setup errors.

Now I'm wondering if I can just change the info for user #1 and, re-register under a new account and then grant myself sysop access from the renamed login.

Or am I just overcomplicating things?

    Thanks!

Hum, myself on my BBS #1 is a regular user I've called it "Super". The account with the Sysop power is something else. All the system email
still goes to #1 but i check it with the ;chuser command.

I been working this way for years no glitch. gave it SEC Level: 50 no exemption or restriction and it work fine.

another user is the real sysop with SEC Level: 99 and with exemption: P R T

I'm not a specialist but it work great for me.

    Hope it help.

What kind of errors? Are you referring to the chksetup script? You could safely ignore that error. User #1 should still be *a* sysop, but it doesn't have to be *the* sysop.

Sure. There are also local user editors that don't require logging in to use: http://wiki.synchro.net/access:index#creating_and_editing_user_accounts

Or am I just overcomplicating things?

Either way is fine, but just be sure that someone makes a habit of logging in as user #1 and checking the mail, etc.

That's where I'm thinking of going as well but since I set up "my" account (the one I'm posting from now and it's #1, can I just go in and change the settings and re-register or would that cause problems internally?

Main reason I ask is because the first time I configured the system I accidentally used the wrong domain name in the setup and when I changed it I started getting errors all over the place and had to reload the board from scratch.

    Thanks!

I'm positive you didn't *have* to do that. Next time, just post the error messages here and we'll help you sort it out without reloading anything from scratch.

i wouldn't delete the user, just alter the privilege. Create you new
account that you want to use as sysop, then with uedit (you can also use umonitor) change its privilege, test it. if your happy with it demote #1
    to level 50.

I'll keep that in mind but it was very early in implementation (first day) and I believe there was alcohol involved at that point in time.
