• Anonymous post listing issues in msglist and DDreader

From nolageek@1:103/705 to All on Tue Aug 11 01:06:37 2020
It's been a while since I've tested my anonymous boards, but I just switched to
    a regular user and...

When I look at my anonymous message areas through the new msglist.js I can see the usernames (both 'posted by' and 'posted to' names), even as non sysops.

And Nightfox, in DDReader's internal msg list the 'posted by' is listed as ANONYMOUS, but the 'posted to' names are still shown.

I didn't see this in the code, but does DDReader have a way that we could specify headers for particular sub boards? Maybe if SMB_SUB_CODE-header.ans or SMB_AREA_CODE is found it is used instead of the regular header.

I thought that's what anonymous meant? Only the 'posted by' would be anonymous?

It currently doesn't have that feature. That might be something I can add.

Well, then you could just reply to that post, view the list of posts and see who posted the one you just replied to - it would no longer be anonymous. :) An area that is flagged as anonymous only would have all posts shown as anonymous when you look at the list so you couldn't tell who posted what.

I think one of the issues with the 'to' name being "anonymous" would be that the message wouldn't come up in that user's new-to-you scan. They'd have to be doing just a newscan or reading all messages in order to see it.

I've done a quick check of the Synchronet documentation: http://wiki.synchro.net/access:exemptions http://www.synchro.net/docs/message_section.html
It seems it doesn't specifically say what the behavior should be when a reply is posted anonymously. I should probably try it and then read a message with the stock Synchronet reader to see how it shows the message.

msglist.js hasn't been enhanced to support anonymous posts correctly yet.

When anyone replies to an anonymous post, the default To: name should be "All" (not the original poster). So I don't think there's any reason to obscure "to" names of posted messages in anonymous bases.
