Have you tried using ctrl/alias.cfg?

For exporting messages from a sub to a mailing list, the separate
ListGate module is used.

i've got that... that's how it gets in...

oh... i thought that was only for lists i host... i don't host this one in question... i only import it into the FTN echomail area...
my system is the gateway into a FTN network for a mailing list...discuss
the mailing list is "read only"...
imported messages from the list are exported to a FTN echomail area...
the FTN echomail area is NOT "read only" and users should be able to
postings from the mailing list...

That's the default behavior. To import messages from a mailing list,
you only need the "sub:" alias in your ctrl/alias.cfg. That's it. You don't need to use/enable the ListGate module.

Yeah I'm a bit confused too, replies shouldn't go out unless listgate
is configured to do so.

my question was preemptive... i wanted to know ahead of time before i
was surprised... listgate and listserver are not employed over here AFAIK... they exist but i'm not using them specifically...
