• weird message numbers?

From Rampage@1:103/705 to Digital Man on Mon Feb 4 10:36:49 2019
i'm seeing something weird with the message numbers when doing a new scan compared to when reading the area...

for example, my newscan tells me there are X "of 1002" in DOVE-Net General but when i read the area, the prompt says i'm on message Y "of 986"... why the 16 count difference?

but that's not the only area, either... DOVE-Net Programming shows 82 but the read prompt only 80...

Area New Scan Read Prompt ===========================================
    General 1002 986 (-16)

could these missing ones be deleted ones somehow?
do message deletes traverse the QWK network?
    is that an option?
why haven't they been purged if they are deleted?

Most likely, votes. They appears as "messages" in the message base index, but aren't loaded as messages when reading.

could these missing ones be deleted ones somehow?

Possibly, but my guess is votes. Especially if you, the sysop, can view deleted
messages, then they'd show at the Reading prompt as well.

do message deletes traverse the QWK network?

    No.

    is that an option?

    No.

why haven't they been purged if they are deleted?

Deleted messages are purged when you run message base maintenance, but I don't think that's the issue here.
