Saturday, 10/28/17 1 to 5 PM at Y2Komics, in southwest Fort Worth, TX.

This was another of our irregularly scheduled weekend sessions. We had two gamers at one table this afternoon.

First up, my Lost Cities, which was new to Michael L. We played the traditional
three hands. In the first hand parity was almost achieve as our scores were 60
to 58. In the second hand Michael L was unable to draw the high value cards he
required to fill out his expeditions. He made a paltry 17, while I gained 60 points. The third hand was the mirror image. I made a scant 9, while he raked in 48. So the overall scores remained very tight.

Final scores: Michael W 127, Michael L 125. Duration: 52 minutes. Michael L liked the game.

Next up, my Lightning: Midway, which was also new to Michael L. He took the American forces, while I ran the Japanese side. The USA drew first blood, sinking my aircraft carrier Soryu. I then retaliated and sunk the Yorktown. The
mid-game saw several failed attacks on both sides. Although I felt I was being
worn down, as my opponent kept drawing Force cards while I wasn't. So the the Americans kept getting stronger. The inevitable then happened, I lost another Japanese carrier, the Kaga. Again, I retaliated and destroyed Midway Island's airfield. Next, I lost the Hiryu. I was now down to one carrier, the Akagi, while the US had two; Enterprise and Hornet. Michael L went "all in" and launched all his ready aircraft squadrons against my Akagi.. I played a "no target" card, which utterly foiled his attack. Now it was my turn to go "all in" I played a Knock-Out Blow" card and launched an attack on both remaining US
carriers. As Michael L now had no planes on deck to launch to counter me, the attack succeeded without further ado, as the US didn't have a "no target" card to counter with. Down went the Hornet *and* the Enterprise. Victory to the Japanese. Banzai!

    Scores: Japan / Michael W 4, USA / Michael L 3. Duration: 45 minutes. Michael
    enjoyed the game.

Our next game was my XiangQi (Chinese chess), which was also new to Michael L. The first ten minutes was the usual opening moves and jockeying for position, with minimal losses. Then things heated up and some major attacks began, as we ventured into enemy territory. Soon major pieces were being lost left and right. Even so, my opponent was catching the worst of it. This would not be a quick, decisive kill (as I'm not that good of a player). I basically ground Michael L down. Oh, he put my emperor in check a couple of times. But I responded in kind thrice as often. Eventually I gained a superior position with
two chariots, a horse, and a cannon, thereby forcing a checkmate.

Victory to Michael W. Duration: 29 minutes. Michael L isn't much of a fan to western Chess. So his view on XiangQi was about the same, rather tepid.

Our last game was my Dvonn, also new to Michael L. We played twice.
Game #1 - As in most games of Dvonn, the outcome was quite uncertain until the last 3-4 moves. When no more moves were possible we could see it would be close.
    Scores: Michael W 19, Michael L 16. Duration: 21 minutes.

Game #2 - This time Michael L managed an early advantage, gaining nominal control of all three Dvonn pieces! I then struggled to keep my far flung white pieces in the game. Again victory determination came down to the last few moves. I never did gain control of any of the red Dvonn pieces, black had them locked down. But I did keep the bulk of my white stacks adjacent to them. Yet that wasn't quite good enough in the final analysis.
    Scores: Michael L 20, Michael W 11. Duration: 18 minutes. Michael L liked Dvonn.
