Tuesday, 01/08/19 6 to 9 PM at the Hulen Mall food court, at 4800 South
Hulen Street, in southwest Fort Worth, TX.

We eventually had ten gamers at two tables this cool evening, including newcomers Jessica R and Matthew P. There were also five no shows.

Table #1 - First, my Alhambra, which was new to Jessica R, Matthew P, and Clayton R. First scoring was the usual low values, ranging from 1 to 7. Alas I realized much later we forgot to score the walls. Yet I doubt anyone had more than 3-4 points of them. In the second third of the game players began working on achieving majorities in building types or maintaining their majorities. Second scoring saw Clayton and Michael in the lead with 29 each. Jessica brought up the rear with 19. The last third of the game was tense (at least for
me) as we tried to maintain our majorities in certain tile types. No one ended
up making all that much on their longest wall segments. We all either made 7 or 9 points. Final scoring was tight for three of us. I lead in Towers and Gardens. Clayton lead in Mezzanines and Manors, Matthew lead in Chambers. While
Duane and Jessica tied for first in Pavilions.

Scores: Clayton R 80, Michael W 79, Duane 78, Matthew P 68, Jessica R 55. Duration: one hour and 13 minutes. The newbies enjoyed the game.

Ben A then joined us. Next up, my Carcassone, which was new to Jessica and Clayton. The 72 base game tiles sure go fast when there are six folks drawing and playing them. So there wasn't as much long range score planning. And much more taking points whenever you could. Duane managed to snag 3 of the 7 monasteries late in the game; in a row no less! I gave the new players some suggestions on tile placement to help them (as I usually do with newbies). So our final scores were pretty well bunched together.

    Scores: Duane 37, Clayton R 36, Ben A 35, Matthew R 30, Michael W 30, Jessica
    28. Duration: 44 minutes. Again the new players liked the game.

Table #2 - Harry H's Scythe, which was new to the rest. Here's part of its blurb from BGG.
"Scythe is an engine-building game set in an alternate-history 1920s period.. In Scythe, each player represents a character from one of five factions of Eastern Europe who are attempting to earn their fortune and claim their faction's stake in the land around the mysterious Factory. Players conquer territory, enlist new recruits, reap resources, gain villagers, build structures, and activate monstrous mechs. Scythe uses a streamlined action-selection mechanism (no rounds or phases) to keep gameplay moving at a brisk pace and reduce downtime between turns. While there is plenty of direct conflict for players who seek it, there is no player elimination."

They did not finish the game. How much more time they would have needed wasn't related to me.

    Partial scores: Harry H 38, Joel C 25, Jessica P 17, Jeff G 14. Duration: I'd guess they played for about 2.5 hours.

I was told by Joel that it was the consensus when they quit that Jessica P probably would have eventually won. Harry had been doing quite well in territory (16 points), while Jeff had 0 for this category. As to resources, they all had 0-2 points. Jessica and Harry had the most coins. And "stars" (whatever those were) showed Joel in the lead with 12, while Jessica had zero.

free to join us for a game.
