Saturday, 01/13/18 1 to 7 PM at the Hulen Mall food court in southwest
    Fort Worth, TX.

This was another of our irregularly scheduled weekend sessions. We had four gamers at one table this chilly afternoon.

Today's game was my The History of the World (1993 Avalon Hill edition),
which was new to Emanuel. Here's a photo of the bare board https://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/384589/history-world . Here are some sample event cards and empire cards https://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/117667/history-world .

Epoch I (3000 - 1400 BC) - After the four white Sumerian armies were
placed near their capital in the Lower Tigris, in the Middle East area, we began the game proper by drawing empire cards; either keeping the card drawn or passing it to another. Then Duane began placing his (red) Minoans, making 6 points. Then Dave C placed his (blue) Indus Valley troops, making 5 points. Next, Michael L placed his (orange) armies of Babylonia, gaining 6 points. Lastly, Michael W then brought the (black) Shang Dynasty into play in China for
5 points. Not seen were the Egyptians or the Aryans. Epoch duration: 16 minutes.

Epoch II (1400 - 450 BC) - Michael L's Assyrians appeared in the Upper Tigris of the Middle East. Michael W then brought on the Chou Dynasty in China. China was now full of his black units giving him Control of it. Next, Dave brought the Greeks into the fray in southern Europe, making 22 more points. Lastly, Duane had the Carthaginians enter the board in north Africa, adding 15 points to his score.

Scores at epoch end: Dave 27, Duane 21, Michael L 21, Michael W 18. Duration: 27 minutes (as we did have some combat this epoch). Not seen were the Vedic City States of India, the Scythians, or the mighty Persians (w/15 armies!).

Epoch III (450 BC - 300 AD) - Dave's blue Maurya troops came on first in India,
making him 31 points (though most of that was for his remaining prior holdings). Michael W's black Hsiung-Nu swept down out of Mongolia in Eurasia into China, crossing the Great Wall easily. He made 24 points this turn. Then Duane plopped down the awesome Roman card, showing its 25 armies and a great moan went up from the rest of us. He enhanced his expansion via two "attack" event cards (win ties and roll 3 dice). And boy did he do a lot of attacking! They enveloped southern Europe, the near east, and north Africa.. The Mediterranean Sea was turned into a Roman lake. Duane's mass of red counters gave him another 36 points. I then told him their strength would very likely cause him to draw last the rest of the game (and so it came to pass). Lastly. Michael L's orange Sassanids came on board, making him another 17 points.

Scores at epoch end: Dave 58, Duane 57, Michael W 42, Michael L 38. Duration: 47 minutes. Not seen were: Celts, Macedonia, or the Han Dynasty.

Epoch IV (300 - 750 AD) - Duane's Goths arrived in northern Europe. They, and his prior holdings made him another 42 points. Dave's Byzantines then appeared in southern Europe. He made 25 points this turn. Next, Michael L's T'ang Dynasty appeared in China and decimated Michael w's holdings there. He made a healthy 33 points for the epoch. Lastly, Michael W's Arabs, 18 strong, came on in Arabia. He used two attack cards. Alas the first one (elite troops, roll 3 dice until you lose an attack) evaporated when he lost the first attack he made! Duane thought that was hilarious. So the mighty Arab army ended up losing
many battles, and gaining only a modest amount of territory. Even so, 30 point
were gained for the epoch. Interestingly, Michael W took all of north Africa, and held all of it for the rest of the game (though its value slowly diminished
    as time went on).

Scores at epoch end: Duane 99, Dave 83, Michael W 72, Michael L 71. Duration: 47 minutes. Not seen were: Guptas, Huns, or the wimpy Khmers.

Epoch V (750 - 1300 AD) - Michael W's Franks came on first, in northern Europe,
adding 38 points to his score. Normally it wouldn't have been that much, but he'd gotten bac to back turns. So all his epoch IV holdings were still on the board. Duane's Holy Roman Empire then also appeared in southern Europe. He made
32 more points. Dave then use his Seljuk Turks to add 33 points to his score. Lastly, Michael L's mighty Mongols (20 armies) appeared in the Turanian Plain in Eurasia. They went mainly east into China. He added 38 points with them.

Scores at epoch end: Duane 131, Dave 116, Michael W 110, Michael L 109. Duration: 50 minutes. Empires not seen were: Vikings (so no dash to North America), the Chola of India, or the Sung Dynasty of China.

Epoch VI (1300 - 1550 AD) - Michael W's Ming Dynasty appeared in China and regained some of the lands Michael L had taken for him. He added 35 points to his score. Next, Duane's Timurid Emirates appeared in Eurasia drove east and west, to China and Europe. They gave him another 25 points. Michael L then plopped down the rinky-dink Inca & Aztec empires card, with its measly 4 armies. Even so, he added 42 points to his score (95% from prior holdings). Dave had Spain and was first to cross the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, to cherry
pick choice lands with resource markers in N & S America, Sub-Sahara Africa, and India with his 15 strength points. This gave him another 36 points.

Scores at epoch end: Duane 156, Dave 152, Michael L 151, Michael W 145. Duration: 41 minutes. Empires not seen were: Portugal, Mughals of India, and the 15 strong Ottoman Turks.

Epoch VII (1550 - 1914 AD) - Dave commented the scores had tightened up. It seemed any of us could win with the right empire. So the drawing/passing of empire cards would be super critical this epoch (as it was the last). Going early in the epoch could be more important than army strength. Michael L activated Russia. Alas it gave him no ocean access. But going first had its advantages. He added a whopping 57 points, mostly from prior holdings. Next, Duane brought the Manchu Dynasty into play. Another empire with no ocean access. Therefore they only did so-so. Plus his prior holding had been ravaged last epoch. He added a tepid 37 points to his score. Dave's Netherlands had ocean access, but only 8 armies. He added 50 points to his score, but most of it was from prior holdings. Now it was down to Michel w. did he have France, mighty Britain (20 armies), the wimpy USA, or mediocre Germany? It was France, the second best in armies (15) but when there's no first, its almost as good. It would take a lot to pass Michael L's lead. That wasn't quite possible, but he did add a whopping 58 points via ocean access and cherry picking coastal resource sites and stealing monuments. Close but no cigar.

Epoch duration: 47 minutes. Not seen this epoch: Britain, USA, and Germany.

Final scores: Michael L 208, Michael W 203, Dave C 202, Duane 193. Total duration: four hours and 35 minutes. I think everyone had a good time and liked
    the game.

Interesting tidbit from this game: The white Sumerians weren't snuffed out until epoch VII (by Dave, I think).

Correction: I should have said the game was new to Michael L and Duane, not Emanuel.

Oh those lousy dutchies.... cost me my deserving win. Always a good day to play history of world it's twists and turns keep everyone in the game. At least the Sumerian empire could be but a memory as the tricolor waves over its capital.
