    Ubuntu?

I suppose you could use telnet (though by default it might not be fully ANSI BBS compatible). I imagine SyncTerm might also have a command-line interface to log into a BBS from the command line.

ssh and telnet work for me... i've not tested a lot but i get ANSI and unicode glyphs which is a lot better than what has been seen historically... not sure how one might do uploads/downloads but there may be a way to do that, too... all the basic stuff works great in what i've done...

I've always liked using actual BBS client to call BBSes, with the ability to transfer files and keep a "phone book" of common BBSes you dial. Some also have scripting abilities built-in so you can automate (or at least semi-automate) part of your connection to a BBS.

I was hoping there was some kind of "quick" logon that allows me to logon to the BBS bypassing
the logon screens and such. I forget which BBS I was running but it allowed me to do that. I run
my BBS remotely to I'm looking for shortcuts. :-) It's bad enough I have to restart the BBS
whenever I make a change but then I have to go through the entire login routine just to test my
changes. Ack! Thanks for your replies.

What kind of change are you talking about? *very* few changes would require restarting the BBS. Usually, a recycle is all that's needed and that happens automatically when key files (e.g. config files) are changed.

There might be a way to configure Synchronet to skip the logon screens. You may need to update your logon.js or login.js. I've seen some BBSes that ask the user if they want to do a quick login (skipping those login screens), and that's probably a mod some sysops do.

Yea Pharcyde has it but he modded the heck out of his synchronet board. Mystic has a built in fast login I believe. Does the DDMatrix have a quick login?

My matrix is not involved in fast vs. non-fast login (and proably would have
no way of really enabling a fast logon for any BBS); it just logs the user in. To enable a fast login, what I'd do is modify your login.js script. Also, check for any doors in SCFG that are set to run for the logon event - If you want to enable a fast login, I'd configure those doors not to run on the logon event and run them from your logon.js script only if the user wants to do a fast logon.

I feel like it's similar to back in the 80s and 90s, if you were going to call a BBS, you'd use a BBS-compatible terminal program.

what i do is really not that much different... open a console, type telnet or ssh and the system i want to connect to, login and enjoy...

i don't have to deal with status bars and my console's measurements are recognized automatically... currently they're 226x61 when i'm in a console but if i use a terminal, i'm always limited to 80x24 or 80x25 if i remember to turn the status bar off...

phonebook? dialing directory? no big deal... i can either whip up a selection menu to choose one from or i can just remember it and type it in or use my command buffer...

i've not tried downloading anything so i don't yet know how to do that but if it is anything like ftp, i may very well be able to shell out and fire up szrz... i haven't had any need to transfer anything, though...

I dunno? Telnet works pretty good on my lubuntu system where as telnet for windows was horrible. I HAD to use a client on windows. I just loved Qmodem. Has it gotten better? It's been a while since I've used windows.

As far as I only, the only commandline option for the stock telnet client is -l
