I stopped caring about Ubuntu when they stopped using Gnome. Now, I give my love to Linux Mint...

But, I'm also using Mystic, not Synchronet. And my BBS is running on a Pi.
PiOS (and most other Pi installs) run a Debian-based Linux, like Ubuntu, but that's where the similarity ends. Therefore, I cannot offer any useful advice on this subject.

Please use real names! This is extremely encouraged on FidoNet!

MX Linux is #1 distro on distrowatch. It's a pretty nice one, I believe.

I've been looking at MX too. But, having deployed Mint on my only Linux PC,
I'm not really interested in changing again. (o_O)

Besides, most new distros (including MX) are just Ubuntu/Debian, with a few minor changes. What reason is there, besides the UI, to change?

While that is completely irrelevant to the conversation thread, it is also true. I've played around with MX some and like it better than most. One thing that makes it attractive to me is that it doesn't use 'systemd'.

Besides, most new distros (including MX) are just Ubuntu/Debian, with a few minor changes. What reason is there, besides the UI, to change?

That does seem to be the case. You can even install Cinnomon on Ubuntu if you want (even though Cinnamon is more associated with Linux Mint).

I suppose it may be a good thing if many of the Linux distros converge on a standard. It has always seemed like an issue that many Linux distros have used their own package managers etc..

    Yep.
I've sometimes heard that Linux itself is just the kernel, and what is added to that (including the GNU tools and other software, shells, and GUI if desired) is what makes it a complete OS. People often refer to all the distros generally as Linux, which isn't really wrong, but each Linux distro could be considered its own OS. I like to see innovation in the different flavors of Linux, but differences in dependencies and package management systems can make things difficult.

He posted it on DoveNet, McNoob. That DoveNet echo is gated to
    FidoNet.

Continuing to use that particular name does not encourage me to like you, hobbit.

Why are you attacking his name? He has a point. As others have pointed out, the message was writen on Dove-Net, which allows aliases. I'm also reading this thread on Dove-Net..

This conference allows aliases on FidoNet and USENET, for that matter.

I've sometimes heard that Linux itself is just the kernel, and what is added to that (including the GNU tools and other software, shells, and
GUI if desired) is what makes it a complete OS.

That is 100% accurate. Technically, Linux is only the kernel. Which is why no distro calls itself just 'Linux'.

    People often refer to
all the distros generally as Linux, which isn't really wrong, but each Linux distro could be considered its own OS.

Again, that's true. The only commonality between Arch, Debian, and Manjaro,
for instance, is the kernel. However, a majority of newer distros are based
on Ubuntu, or at least Debian (which Ubuntu is based on), and therefore are very similar. Which brings us right back to the start of our conversation. :)

    I like to see innovation
in the different flavors of Linux, but differences in dependencies and package management systems can make things difficult.

Yes, and no. Certainly, there is a learning curve when changing to a
completely different distro. But the underlying concepts remain the same, because the kernel is the same. One will always need a package manager, for instance. The names and syntax might be different, but they all do the same job. The command line is, for the most part, also the same.

A man from England, and a woman from China, are both human. They both have eyes, ears, arms, legs, hands, and feet. They will look and sound different from each other, but more alike than, say, a human and a fish.

Linux is kinda like that; many different Linux-es, but they're all more alike with each other than they are with Windows.

Isn't Gnome still the default desktop on Ubuntu? Either way
I've never really liked the default GUI on Gnome - It feels
like it was designed for a tablet. I liked classic Gnome (2
    I believe)?.

Linux Mint has been my favorite distro for a while now. I
particularly like their Cinnamon UI, although I think their
    Xfce edition is good too.

    Nightfox
haha. I consider GNOME 1 the "classic GNOME". GNOME 2 was
newfnagled and dumbed down,'ans GNOME 3 an abomination.

GNOME 1.2, with the Freeamp theme Clock apllet, ahh, that is
    where it was at.
