• echo areas question

From Andrew Alt@1:261/38 to All on Mon Aug 5 16:54:28 2019
    Hi,

As I browsed through the list of Fidonet echoes, I noticed there's a fido.perl,

fido.pascal, but not a fido.c. Any particular reason? Also some other areas that
seem logical to have would be fido.piano (because there's a fido.guitar), and fido.music.

And what's the appropriate area for a question like this?

    Thanks...

Fido echoes all started because people wanted a place to chat about a certain topic. If you wanted to start an area called PIANO you could do that. If you run your own node or BBS you could just create the area and invite others to link to the area.

If you wanted the area to be carried on the backbone and listed in the BACKBONE.NA file that is doable too. There is a process there but it can be done.

And what's the appropriate area for a question like this?

I think this area is OK to discuss this topic.

I see. No, I don't run my own node or BBS. I'll provide a little intro...

It's been several years since I messaged through Fidonet. I had to cut back using
the computer a lot because of chronic pain issues, which have become more manageable with meditation. Around 2004 I got in touch with Janis about adding some files to FileGate.

Now the last few years I've been coding and using the computer more, and had a file I wanted to distribute and my thoughts again turned to Janis ;) And I figured
while I am logged into Prism, I may as well read some messages and see if I can

get into any interesting conversations. ;)

If you wanted the area to be carried on the backbone and listed in the BACKBONE.NA file that is doable too. There is a process there but it
    can be done.

Ok... I'll keep that in mind and inquire more. Not sure yet how much I'll active
I'll be so I'll wait a bit before making requests. Thanks again.

This area is fine for any topic, btw :)

There once was a fido C programming area in Fidonet, but that message area fell off the backbone ages ago (not sure I remember when) because of non-usage in that message area.

This is an awkward time to start a new backbone echo because we are in the midst of reworking the ECHOBASE software that is used to accept data records from Moderators for their message Echo areas.

Dale Barnes, 1:106/201, is reworking the echobase software as I type... hopefully, we'll be set with that software some time soon in the future.

    Take care,
    Janis

Thanks for the update. No need to start a new echo for me. I hope the migration

    goes smoothly. :)
