• 1992 vs. 2022

From Mike Powell@1:2320/105 to ALL on Mon Jun 20 17:01:00 2022
1992: The rallying cry during the Presidential election
from the Democrats and left was a Hillary Clinton quote, "It's the economy, stupid!" which had been aimed at the sitting President, George H. W. Bush.

Of course, although the economy was dipping some, it was not in near the bad shape it was 10+ years before that, when the last Democrat was in office.
Nor was it as bad as 2008, and it was NO WHERE near as bad as now. Yet...

2022: The mantra from the same crowds is that "tHE PreSideNt doES nOt
conTrOl thE ecoNoMy, stUPid." The blame is going towards everyone and everywhere except the President. The most-recent former President might
have controled the economy, and it might be his fault, but not this one!

    Funny how things change.

Inflation in the US is about the same as it is around the world. It's due to
a combination of a worldwide epidemic and a worldwide oil crisis, neither of which are Biden's fault. Nice try, though.

Another difference of note is that while rising inflation is typically accompanied by rising unemployment, that is not the case right now. In fact, it's quite the opposite; there are not enough workers to fill all of the open positions. This is something fundamentally different from what we experienced in 1992.

    Hello Jeff,

conTrOl thE ecoNoMy, stUPid." The blame is going towards everyone
    and

    one!
    Funny how things change.

Another difference of note is that while rising inflation is typically accompanied by rising unemployment, that is not the case right now.

The more things change, the more things stay the same.

    In fact, it's quite the opposite;

    Not really.

there are not enough workers to fill all of the open positions.

    Not in all areas.

This is something fundamentally different from what we experienced
    in 1992.

Shrimpers in Louisiana would beg to differ. Shrimp are selling
at .75 cents to $1 per pound, but the cost of fuel is over $5 per
gallon (whether diesel or gas makes no difference). And with the
price of imported shrimp going down, local produce cannot compete.
As a result, shrimpers are unable to make a profit, and wind up
shutting their business down. Damages to boats and processors
due to storms (such as hurricanes) also affect shrimpers.

But Republicans not want to talk about stuff like that. After all,
their belove orange whatever-you-want-to-call-it did nothing to help
those shrimpers who lost their boats due to hurricanes. President
Biden did, when Hurricane Ida (a class 4 hurricane) came roaring
    through south Louisiana.

Donald Trump visited Puerto Rico after a hurricane devasted the
island. And what did he do during his visit? He tossed paper towels
to the adoring crowd, as if he was playing quarterback and they
were receivers. I do not know how many paper towels it takes to
clean up the mess a hurricane leaves behind, but whatever it is
    can never be enough.

Oh, how Republicans loved to complain about inflation when Carter
was president. And the price of gas. Always going up, up, up. Even
though people had jobs and could afford to pay for all the gas they
wanted. Then came Reagan. And the Great Recession. Which was more
like a huge depression in the oil patch, where the OFFICIAL
UNEMPLOYMENT RATE WAS 25% due to Reagan's trickle-down economics
(his vice president called it voodoo economics). Never mind the
real unemployment in the oil patch was over 50%, with grow men
painting houses and mowing lawns just to pay their utility bills.

We know this country was not happy with Trump. And there are some
folks who are claiming they are not happy with Biden. So maybe it is
time to put an end to the Trump/Biden era.

    LET'S BRING BACK CARTER!

"Why not the best?" ~Jimmy Carter, candidate for President

In November 1976 the American people gave him their answer.

    "I do solemnly affirm ..."
~ Jimmy Carter, January 20, 1977, 39th President of the United States

Imagine the world reaction on future news -

    "I do solemnly affirm ..."
~ Jimmy Carter, January 20, 2025, 47th President of the United States

    Homophopbic Republicans.

Republicans voted to ban gays from their state convention in Texas
this past weekend. As a result, Log Cabin Republicans in Houston were
not allowed to set up their booth, or to vote.

Maybe we need to offer job training to people to help get the people to fill positions or have networking events with high school and college graduates.
