• oxp: threads + PMs

From August Abolins@2:221/1.58 to All on Mon Mar 2 21:59:00 2020
    Hello!

I just realized that OXP can produce a fine thread-tree that identifies
the messages that were written as PMs (private messages) in an echo:

OpenXP Re-Org Message Netcall Fido Edit Config Tools ?
Address Hold Delete Kill Reply PM Info Other -------------------------------------------------------------------------
    References of "Mail Reader"
334 02.03 Rick Smith Mail Reader
    678 02.03 ÃÄÄAlan Ianson
    146 02.03 ³ ÃÄÄRick Smith
    +* 912 02.03 ³ ÀÄÄAugust Abolins (PM)
    599 02.03 ÃÄÄDan Clough
    +* 1406 02.03 ÀÄÄAugust Abolins (PM)

In the above, it shows that I wrote one PM to Alan Ianson, and another PM
to Rick Smith in the same topic/conversation.

It's taken you long enough to spot this :-))))))

Yes, nice feature, isn't it :)

I hadn't started writing many PMs spawned from echomail messages until recently. I needed to check for some messages regarding a certain topic,
and boom - visually - there they were. Before then I had assumed that my
PMs were *only* accessible in the private Address Book section associated with the particular person, and not in the echo database.

I don't understand why people (usually from the sysop group) frown on the usefulness of threading that can be achieved from MSGID and REPLYID.

In addition to navigating through a "thread" with the keyboard controls, a visual representation can aide in getting to the right message quicker.
The visual tree feature is a nice testament to what can be achieved when taking the time to produce the programming to achieve it.

I think the only other Fidonet-related reader that offered to produce a visual thread tree was Fleetstreet (OS/2)
