Yes.. it invokes GoldED. I am not too familiar with it, but it seems to have many editing options. I've only used it briefly when I was experimenting with invoking an external editor with Apoint. I'm spoiled with OXP and working locally, but this real-time webpoint method feels very different from anything else. A little internet delay when typing is to be expected.

Like Thomas said, this method doesn't require any extraneous programs at all.

Full bbs-like options are available: file-requests, netmail, re-routing netmail, etc (mostly provided by the GoldEd features).

    Hello August,

Interesting. Your tearline says GoldED. Is that what you used to
    write that message?

    Yes.. it invokes GoldED.

Interesting, it invokes golded in a web interface. Sounds like Thomas has put a lot of effort into it. It would be good if he could get the "." between your first and last name out.

Yep, sounds like a usefull setup. Is that your own point address?

I have thought about doing something similar. My idea was to give folks ssh access. If folks are comfortable with an ssh shell they could edit files and set envirnments as they please and once their configuration is done they can run golded (or any editor) to read and reply to messages. If they are not comfortable in the shell I could setup a golded.cfg for them and set their shell to golded so when they log in golded fires up for them and when they leave it shuts down.

That's how I am logged in now. No delay at all as I type.

Full bbs-like options are available: file-requests, netmail,

Yep, golded is a handy editor. There was nothing to compare it to when Odin first started on it.

Yes.. I thought that "August.Abolins" was rather odd. Maybe it's a consequence of a some requirement to make the process work? I'll see what Thomas has to say.

The startup/initalization process reminds me of a Remote Desktop
connection. It is implemented in Windows 7. After initialization, I see
two DOS windows. One for the controlling the Areas, and the other is a
    GoldEd session.

I've posted some screen shots here, temporarily:

The point address ending with /808.7 is assigned to me, yes.

I see many bbses offer ssh. Personally, I've never tried it.

Thomas's implementation keeps the experience simple and only related to
using the point system for messages. In otherwords, there is no archaic terminal/shell prompt waiting for user commands. Menu commands are in one window, and the editor/area commands are in another window on the same screen.

That's how I am logged in now. No delay at all as I type.

The slight delay is acceptible, afterall.. I'm connecting with a system
all the way in Italy from Canada, and the screen experience is rendering multiple DOS screens within Windows.

I probably *can* get used to GoldEd, but I am quite spoiled with OXP's
    editor now.

A few GoldEd commands didn't seem to work for me: Threading, for example.
The T) command kept cycling through the Twit options.

Overall, I think PointWeb is a fine accomplishment.

I'll reserve more comments about it for later.

I would like to see other people try it and hear their comments.

Using a text mode app over the interweb sounds not very pleasant... IMHO.

GoldED is a very powerful sysop editor. The best, actually. Do you have full access to the msgbase? The msgbase dedicated to you?

    IMHO.

This feels not unlike a VNC or Remote Desktop session.

There can probably be room for improvement with the display (the GoldEd screen is only about 6.5" across and 3" high on my 11" wide laptop screen).

Not sure what you mean by "full access". There is just a very simple main menu screen to Add/Remove/List Areas and Send/Receive messages, and another screen that embodies GoldEd. See my screenshots at:

After receiving my credentials and logging in, I have to agree that the GoldED window is far too small. By playing about with the window
properties, I can get the window size to anything I like but GoldED itself doesn't resize accordingly. For me, that's a showstopper on my 19" wide screen monitor :-((

What resolution are you running at? Physically, how wide and high are
those DOS windows on your screen?

My 14" laptop is 1440x1050, and that makes each DOS window a little
wider than 3" across. That's pretty small.

I recently posted the results on my 17" monitor (with a ruler for scale
in a couple of them) :

    http://openxp.kolico.ca/pointweb-on-17/

It's running at 1280x1024 which makes each DOS window a bit larger at 7" across. But that's still a bit too small for regular use. And, the
height of those windows is fixed at 80x25 chars. Taller/longer windows
    would be good!

As you discovered, the login screen is scalable, but not the actual
    webpoint session.

    They are 7.3" x 3.7"

JOOI, my OpenXP window size is 13.4" x 8.1", which is far more to my own liking but it probably wouldn't be to everyone's taste. However, this
window size is achieved by a combination of OpenXP's display settings,
    window font and font size.

Wow. I missed that the first time. Apparently there are four "pages" of help options in the reading window. Alt-S was on the second page. Not being familiar with GoldEd, I was just using the Up/Down arrow keys to go through the help screen. So many options in GoldEd. Insane.
