    Hello!

Looking for help in setting up an NNTP server with OXP.

Here are the salient settings, but I get an error after a poll:

    ³ eternal-sep NNTP nospam@nospam.net

    ³ ³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ

The above was failing to connect. So, I changed the setting to port 119
and non-secure, and that allowed a connection.

    ³ ³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ [F2] ÄÙ

But the poll failed to grab an index file from which to pick the ngs.

What I am missing? And I would like port 563 and SSL to work, eventually.

There are four distinct steps to setting up an NNTP Server .....

    ³ ³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ

    That's Step #1 completed.

The above was failing to connect. So, I changed the setting to port 119 and non-secure, and that allowed a connection.
    ^^^^^^^^^^^^
    That's Step #4

    ³ ³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ [F2] ÄÙ

You need to bin the above, it 'aint needed.

But the poll failed to grab an index file from which to pick the ngs.

    What I am missing?

    Steps #2 and #3 :)

Rather than post the steps in their entirity, I'll give a very brief
    rundown .....

    Step #1
    -------
Configure your NNTP Server(you've already done that).

    Step #2
    -------
    Grab a newsgroup list.

    Step #3
    -------
    Subscribe to a newsgroup(s).

    Step #4
    -------
Poll the news server for mail.
You did that but you jumped the gun :)

To save me posting a ton of info in here, please refer to Section #7 of oxpguide.pdf for the fully documented procedure, thank you :)

    Martin

A *ton* of info? Come on now. ;)

    All I was missing was:

"The next step is to retrieve a newsgroup list from the news server and
should be performed in the following manner: Either press <F10>, cursor
along to "Message" and press <Enter> or just press "M". Now select "News/
    Echo Manager..","

I totally forgot about the guide. Thank you again for creating it!

Now.. there are a few things in it that may need updating. ;)

    [1]

For example, the above quote should actually read:

"The next step is to retrieve a newsgroup list from the news server and
should be performed in the following manner: Either press <F10> + <Enter>, cursor
along to "Message", or just press "M". Now select "Area Manager..","

    ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ

(At least that is how it behaves and looks in the Windows version)

I would also suggest page numbers for the guide, that we can narrow down
the place to look by saying "See 7.1, page 2, para 3"

    [2]

In Subscribe, the S)earch does not behave the way you describe:

"but if you know the name of the newsgroup or part of the name, you can
perform a search by pressing "S". After typing in the search phrase and pressing <Enter>, a list of matches will be displayed and you should
cursor over the newsgroup you wish to subscribe to and press <Enter>."

I do not get "a list of matches". I only get the first match. Then if I want to continue with the search, I have to press "S <Enter>" again.

I've just blown the dust off my copy of the guide dated 16th April 2019
and that's also incorrect. A lot's changed over the last 12 months, so it looks as though as I'm going to have to refresh things. Thanks for
    bringing this to my attention.

Yes, good idea, I'll have a look at that too.

Hmmmmm, can't find that particular help topic ??

Yes, that's how it works here.

    [1] <F10> + <Enter>, and

But all of the above *ar*e correct and result in the same thing, at least

Yes, good idea, I'll have a look at that too.

With today's wordprocessors, all that can be automatically generated as required. Just add a header or a footer placeholder for it.

Correct. When I wrote "the way you describe", I meant your oxp guide.

There is not much "help" on how the S)earch works in the program itself.

I do not get "a list of matches". I only get the first match. Then if

Yes, that's how it works here.

    There you go!

So... in the past, did the S)earch do a total list of matches before, and since then has been changed? A total list of matches would be nice -
just like it works in Thunderbird.

Yes, I tried that a long time ago but for some reason which escapes me, I didn't implement it. I'll take another look.

In all honesty, I don't ever remember it doing that but I assume it must
have done, otherwise, I wouldn't have written what I wrote <shrug>.

Yes it would, perhaps you could suggest it in the support newsgroup :)
