• OS upgrade.

From Marc Lewis@1:396/45 to All on Sun Feb 23 20:44:25 2020
    Hello All.

My systems run eComstation 2.1RC5. What do you think an update to 2.1GA would entail? (Aleady have a valid license for it.) Is it worth the effort or should I just buy an ArcaOS license?

    Best regards,
    Marc

I am running ArcaOS Personal Edition 5.0.3 (I am behind as I cannot afford a subscription right now). It is definitely worth the upgrade. With Arca, you also get the benefit of a lot of Linux tools baked right in. Plus it works on a lot of hardware.

I've been using ArcaOS for at least two years now for the BBS and have been quite happy with it.

I went the ArcaOS route, since it will continue to be updated. But as
stable as OS/2 is, I am still a fan of "if it works, don't change it".

Was sitting on the fence to just run Warp 4.52...but saw a couple of Bryan Lunduke's videos on ArcaOS. Got the money in this morning & got it & a used Lenovo system. Haven't had a chance to play with it yet...but there will be time for that soon.

Arca has some definite quirks and don't be surprised if you need to finesse
it onto a system. I tried five different computers before I settled on the Dell Optiplex GX620 that the BBS is on now. You may have an issue with OS/2-DOS not working initially after install but there is an easy fix for
    it.

It's working fantastic on Virtualbox. Just had a thought while in the shower that I may just set up the board on the new system & try out the EEE 1000HE
    to run it.

Just got my 2nd book...OS/2 Unleashed yesterday...so with OS/2 for Dummies (which I've used already) & the net...shouldn't be too bad.

Have forgotten how fast/easy it runs...compared to my Windows 10 box. Difference is for 10 having to feed the hamster & ArcaOS wanting my whole
    hand with the food. ;)

    Greetings,

How is the archa OS/2? I was a big fan of os/2 back in the 90's had my BBS running on it..

I was as well & with my tax refunds...got a copy of it earlier this week with
a 1 year subscription & one of those Lenovo boxes they use in retail outlets
    to run it on.

Set it up in Virtualbox with Panarama & can do almost full screen HD with no lag. Firefox run nice on it...as well as some of the Linux ports they have on it. Networking ran out of the box without me doing anything at all. Overall...set up like a Windows/Linux install.

Will be posting later on how the Lenovo box is running...since it's coming in later today. Paid $50 for it on Ebay...so with a BIOS...should go on it
    without any/few issues.

I really enjoy it and although it is not perfect, it does help to run OS/2 on new hardware. There is still issues, but they can usually be worked out. I don't use it as a daily driver, but it runs my BBS and keeps chuggin along.

ArcaOS runs just fine here for my BBS. I'm using an older version so I
don't have the latest updates ... but I'm running Maximus, Squish,
BinkleyTerm, Internet Rex, and NEF -- all OS/2-native -- with no issues.

The BBS is running on a Dell Optiplex GX620 that I bought for $10. The computer has a 3.2ghz P4 HT CPU, 3GB RAM, and 1TB of storage.

That is awesome! I surely do miss OS/2 such a shame IBM dropped that ball.. Besides the internet piece you described my intial BBS setup.. I did move

Am working on getting it setup on a Lenovo ThinkCentre I picked up from Ebay for $50 last week. Still haven't gotten it running on the system...due to

If you have the time and right environment, Lora's been open source since
1999. I have the source code for it on my BBS, if I remember right.

Unfortunately for me, I just have lost the steam to try and work on a BBS software package. Just dealing with my simple doors is enough for me.

I had to see a modern Telegard board. VERY IMPRESSED!!!! It was almost like something clicked that I want to run it again. Was close to meeting an old girlfriend after years & wanting to see if you can restart what you once had.

As Tony L & I have been talking about...he's thinking of getting ArcaOS as well. Will have 3 days off in a row next week...so will have the time to do some tinkering.

Feel free to come on over!

Thanks! Thankfully most of the work I put into was done many years ago.
When I put it back online a few years ago, I just unzipped the backup

I wished I had my backups...but 30 years of moving around all over the

Certainly will! Gotta get the Panorama video driver running again after
setting it up a little high to see if it would do it. The Coby TV I use wouldn't...so am back to 640x480x16. ;) Guess I should quit doing those "hold my beer" moments. ;)
