I am not sure I follow you. Do you mean local BBS email or internet e-mail?

The internet e-mail is user.name@bbsdomain where spaces in the real name or user name field are replaced with a .

Local BBS e-mail also works for both the alias and real name fields.

I have been trying to set it up to be able to access my bbs email remotely. I have the server info setup but when I try to add a pop3 account to gmail I am getting an error. I can see gmail accessing the server but the logs don't give me any useful info.

Anyhow, my username on the board is Captain Obvious. My take on that is that my username through pop3 is captain.obvious, correct? The message that mystic sends to gmail is "unknown user"

All I am getting in my mis log is:
    + 2021.07.25 20:56:43 POP3 > Connect on slot 1/8 (209.85.219.143)
    + 2021.07.25 20:56:43 POP3 1-HostName mail-yb1-f143.google.com
    + 2021.07.25 20:56:43 POP3 1-Country United States of America (US)
    + 2021.07.25 20:56:43 POP3 1-Connection closed

I went ahead and telnetted into the pop server from a raspberry pi to troubleshoot. This is what I got:

    telnet bbs.shadowscope.com 110
    Trying 155.186.204.191...
    Connected to shadowscope.noip.us.
    Escape character is '^]'.
    +OK Mystic POP3 Server
    user captain.obvious
    -ERR Unknown user

I am a few days behind on alphas so will download the latest shortly and try again.

Your user name and password are the same that you use to log in to the BBS.

I'll update the POP3 server to accept the e-mail address as login as well though since I can imagine some clients probably try that by default if they try to automatically setup your account.

I'll get that into the next build and then what you are doing should work. Otherwise you have to use your BBS login and password.

Awesome. Gmail doesn't accept spaces in usernames when you try to add pop servers so that's the big issue.

I have no problems having a login with a space in the user name with my Gmail on Android. Maybe if you try an automated setup it defaults to logging in with your e-mail address? I have seen clients do that.

Manual setup allows you to set the login and password (at least it does for me).

Hadn't thought about setting it up through my phone. I had been trying from desktop gmail adding a pop3 address in to have it pull for me.

Doing it from my phone works well, thanks.

Do have an issue, not sure what is causing it. If I respond to an email I am getting an smtp error. From my mis log:

Do have an issue, not sure what is causing it. If I respond to an email
I am getting an smtp error. From my mis log:

I would say upgrade to the latest version that has the latest round of POP3/SMTP changes and let me know if you still have any issues. I did fix one bug in SMTP that could cause a crash like that.

I went ahead and updated. I ended up using K-9 email client on my phone (haven't used that in years). No problems at all and I can use it to send plain text emails as well which is apparently something I am not able to do from the latest gmail client on my pixel.

I certainly appreciate the help. It's doing what I need it to now.

Another one you can look at is Blue Mail, I have been using it with Mystic now for the past 3 years pulling down my email from the board. Works like a charm, I have never been able to repy to emails but I think that was more of a configuration thing for me then anything else..

Love blue mail! Been using it for about 5 years I think on my androids. In fact when clients email on the iPhone is having issues with mail servers I have them install blue mail and they never complain again!

I will have to get the gmail client a shot on Android to see, but it should at least now accept logs via the e-mail address.

Maybe there is something else going on too. I do know that when I tested with "eM Client" on Windows I think it defaulted to expecting a SMTP server that required e-mail authentication so I had to go in and uncheck "server requires authentication" to make it work. Maybe it could be something similar?

Mystic's SMTP server does not require any authentication instead it just requires that e-mail is only sent to its own domain (ie users on your own BBS). I do plan to change that in the future so there is the option to do both what it does now, and also require authentication (in addition to sending e-mail outside the BBS).

I am not sure exactly when this bug happened but I believe its in A46... But there was a bug that was causing the SMTP server to crash when sending replies which has since been fixed in the latest A47 builds.

Works fine for me, I have been running the pop3/smtp server since A39 and
other then never being able to send mail from my phone to the BBS I get my email with no issues at all, my problem is more a configuration issue, that I can almost guarantee, I use it more just so I know there is a message for me, or a new user logged in and needs access if they didn't go through my email verification code setup to bump them up...

Possibly. I've been testing with both sending and receiving using K-9 and haven't had any issues.

When A47 is released as Alpha, I will check my config again and get it working.. I changed the ports because I was under the impression my INet Provider blocked 25 and 110, but they don't! I will give it another shot since I know it works...
