• Apology

From Daryl Stout@1:19/33 to All on Thu Jun 13 16:03:17 2019
My apologies to Joe Mackey for missing our "rendezvous"
this week. I had BBS and computer issues Monday and Tuesday,
and did not get the message that he'd be in the Little Rock
area until AFTER the fact on June 13.

As it turned out, I was stuck at home the last 3 days,
waiting for deliveries, and so today, June 13, the day
when no thunderstorms were forecast to be in Arkansas, I
decided to go visit my elderly Mom in the nursing home in
Lonoke. Storms move back into the region over the weekend
and last through much of next week, so that will "wash out"
    any errands...no pun intended.

With the BBS issues, and having to redo all of the message
areas, I am now way behind on packets, and likely lost some
mail. Unfortunately, the message I got from Joe was sent
out 2 days ago, and I didn't see it until after I got
back home from Lonoke. I guess he had lost my email, but
I can check that much more often than the BBS email.

The glitch was with a bad origin line, showing the
former domain of the BBS. I had thought that by going
through and removing the origin line for each network,
then adding a default origin line instead would do the
trick, but it didn't take somehow. So, I zapped all of
the message networks on the BBS, and rebuilt them from
scratch...and that took 2 days to process over 1000 areas.
Now, I'm being chided for not asking for help. I had done
so, but I guess they forgot.

I guess our meeting wasn't meant to be, and I feel
guilty about it. So, maybe it's best that I leave the
echo in disgrace. The BBS, ham radio, and square dancing,
are the only things keeping me sane right now...but it
may be time to take a break from the hobbies, and go off
alone somewhere, and not logon or read messages for a
good while. With thunderstorms likely here Saturday
through much of next week, that will kill any computer
or BBS work...plus the cell networks are the first things
that fail around here when thunderstorms are in the area.

My apologies to Joe Mackey again for "leaving him
hanging", but I didn't get the message from him until
after the fact...and, I feel guilty for what happened.
I was so looking forward to our meeting and lunch. I
will keep the Burma Shave ads going for now...but, I
likely am going to be away from the BBS for awhile.

Don't be silly... life happens, and it happens to all of us... no need
to feel guilty, or to leave us "in disgrace"... And, case in point, I'm answering this rather late.... having downloaded this packet the night
before leaving for a place without any internet/telnet access for almost
a week... Sometimes the timing just mis-coincides... I do hope that
    you've reconsidered in the meantime...

That sort of interruption does happen, but no reason for that to
permanently or even long-term become the case... You'll have a break
when you take your trip in the fall, too.... :)

Hopefully you at least will see the messages we send you... :)

Well, Joe got lost from my directions, but we finally did hook up. He
sent me a picture of you and Jim White, which I got just before I got
knocked offline and displaced for 2 weeks, due to severe weather.

That sort of interruption does happen, but no reason for that to NB>permanently or even long-term become the case... You'll have a break NB>when you take your trip in the fall, too.... :)

Well, I got the break, but it was having to stay at an area motel for
10 days, because of no power or air conditioning here. The apparent
temperature was at dangerous levels, I was sweating profusely (it was
like taking a hot shower, then going into bed naked and wet), and didn't
sleep for 5 hours the night after the storm. So, I had to stay at an
area motel. The insurance company still considered the structure
"livable", since there was still running water, and no other damage,
besides the electric meter being pulled off the north side of the house,
and damage to the inside panel...both of which were replaced.

I want to know how one can consider being inside a structure with
apparent temperatures over 100 degrees as "livable". People die in those conditions every year. To them, it's a catastrophe if they have to pay a
    claim.

While I paid around $86 a night with tax (one is lucky to get a hotel
room for under $125 a night), and the total bill was nearly $950, that
resulted in my CANCELLING the train trip to cover the cost.

Hopefully you at least will see the messages we send you... :)

I had to do a lot of tweaking, in upgrading the system to Windows 10
32-bit Pro, but I'm finally able to read mail. Needless to say, my QWK
packet is HUGE...and that's just the Inbox.

    Daryl

See.... Life Happens.... things do work out, even when other things get
    in the way....

At least you've got your electric back now... :) Given all the medical
issues you have, though, I'd think you could get some sort of
certification from your doctor that says that you are at high risk in
extreme weather conditions, perhaps even that a/c and/or heat are life
support in your case... Dunno if insurance would be swayed, but it
could get you first dibs on restoring power from the power companies...
And it might make a point of medical necessity with the insurance...

What's the point of having insurance if they don't pay out claims when
it's justified, after all... I just had a bit of a run=in with insurance myself, after a deer ran in front of my car last month... car is now
fixed, and nothing out of my pocket, mostly due to having a very helpful
and good collision mechanic on my side... but it took longer than it
needed to, thanks to the adjuster... Of course, it meant that the
insurance had to pay more for my rental car, since I needed that longer, too....

But of course... ;) When I get home, and can upload these replies, I
know my incoming message packets will be huge, too.... This is the third week-long trip I've made since the 14th of June.... ;)
