From JOE MACKEY@1:123/140 to ALL on Fri Jan 11 06:58:16 2019
I will off line, pretty much, for the next nine days.
Christmas break is ending and _they_ return starting tomorrow.
I have been posted to a dorm and not have net access. I will be around Sunday. The following week I am training new people in parking and
working full time all week and with the hours I'll be working it will be
    hit and miss.
I should be back regularly on the 21st.
With this group there should be no problems. :)

Thanks. I'm back to normal (for me) again. In the last two weeks my schedule was changed three times. Instead working last weekend I had it
off, worked all week, and have today off and working tomorrow. (The boss
    hates paying overtime).
I love being back in parking, training new hires, which I referred to
as to clops of fresh clay to mold as I liked. :)
I told them all I was (Dr) Evil Officer 49 the new guys were going to
be "Mini-me's" Reaction of people on campus (who remembered me) was
mixed. It was was either cheers or jeers, no middle ground. :)
I told the chief (of police)I had taught them everything I know and he
said I could of done that in less than five minutes why was there all
    week? :)
There was a lot of banter with the office and the cops and like the
    old days.
Parking enforcement has been very lax the last couple of years and
    hopefully that will change.

When I was in silkscreen printing for 20 years, it was as if "the left
hand didn't know what the right hand was doing", with the owners 2 sons.
So, I literally went to the original owner (the father), and in tears,
and demanded "Who the hell am I supposed to believe??!!". I still have nightmares of former jobs from years ago. I retired on disability 15
years ago, and they keep finding stuff wrong with me.

I spend a couple of hours going over that, giving the new guys a copy

    I'm sure you're a good teacher. :)

I'm the same way on stuff for the BBS. Now, sometimes, I can figure it
out by reading (or just skimming) the documentation. But, other times, I
need a graphical image or more help. I wish these computer folks would
realize that not all of us are as computer savvy and literate as they

A friend of mine had the ringtone of "I'm about to whup somebody's @$$"...whenever his boss called...and "Ding! Dong! The witch is dead!", whenever his wife called. <G>

I was talking to them at the end of the first day when the chief passed
by asking what I was doing in his building. I said I was teaching them JM>everything I knew. He asked what I was doing there the other seven hours JM>and 58 minutes. :)

    LOL.

We did get along great and lots of joking around.

I was like that working at the Burger King across from the University
Of Arkansas At Little Rock 40 years ago. The current location is where a Shoney's used to be (I don't think there are any of them in Arkansas
anymore). Anyway, many nights, I was the only white employee on the
crew...and we had a blast!! We didn't care of the color of our skin...we
were there to do a job. One of the cashiers called out an order, saying "Chicken. Make It All White Meat!!"...he busted out laughing, as did the
rest of us. BTW, I *LOVE* the ORIGINAL chicken from Burger King...and
their nuggets have a real good flavor as well.

    One of the black girls referred to me as "the little virgin boy";
because unlike so many others back then (even more so now), I was not
the promiscuous type. The only woman I had relations with was my late
wife. The funny parts though, were:

    1) A young lady I square danced with kidded me that "if you don't use
    it, it'll fall off".

That reminds me of the late Paul Lynde's comment on Hollywood Squares,
where Peter Marshall asked "It is the most abused and neglected part of
your body. What is it??". Paul quipped "Mine may be abused, but it's
certainly not neglected"!! <G> How they got stuff past the censors back
    then, I'll never know!!

    2) One guy I worked with was living with a girl (shacked up), and had
already had a kid by her. I made it no secret that "I was a virgin".

Well, after my wife and I got back from the honeymoon, and I went back
to work, he asked me if I was "still a virgin". I looked at him dead in
the eye, and said "I'm married. What do you think??!!". When I told my
boss, I thought he was going to spit his teeth out of his mouth!! <G>

One time their dispatcher and the parking boss had a dispute and she
was banned from riding in the golf cart. She said in that case I was JM>banned from being in dispatch.

    Sounds like tit for tat.

One day I was talking to her about something and standing in the room
when the chief came around the corner, shotgun in hand, cocked it and JM>asked what I was doing in that room. I said "leaving". (The gun was JM>unloaded).

I imagine his job can be boring. He has to record everything that goes
    on around campus.
    A sports game? Photograph it.
President giving a speech. Photograph it. (We had a president,
recently deceased, died in office, who had his picture taken all the

I used to joke that I didn't care who was working in parking, they
could be black/white, gay/straight, male/female, even a member of ISIS,
so long as they did the job.
(I was sort of Ninja ticket writer. I would appear out of nowhere,
write the ticket and be long gone within seconds).

    Hard to say.
The first week so much is thrown at them (esp. in crash courses like
lately) they are more dazed and confused than anything else. It takes a
good two weeks for everything to be absorbed and then the Aha Moments set
    in.
In the past I was able to discuss things with them but now its a week
of training and out on their own. Sink or swim.
I have had people people who seem at first they will work out and don't
and others I didn't think would last a week who turned out very well.
A day in class, then out in the field. Its when they are on their own
they prove their meddle. When no one is hovering around them, coaching, directing, etc.

So you codified what you felt was the best practice in the field, from
the contradictory orders from the bosses... ;) Did you run it by them originally, or just figure you had it well enough...?

I had the head of parking look it over who made one or two minor
    changes and ok'ed it.
I was reminded of a barber college here once.
A student would spend time cutting hair and when they thought it was
perfect call over an instructor. Each time that guy would do a minor
snip here and a snip there (not enough to make any difference) and ok it.

And obviously the chief's implying that you had relatively little

It was joking around. I got along great with all the guys.
Outside the station it was busy, inside, away from the public, it was
    joking and clowning around. *
One time I was on campus for something, in uniform, and the chief was
sitting at MY desk, in MY chair. He asked what I was doing there again
and said "I know you guys can't get along with me" and he muttered
    "That's what you think". :)
(Even through the old table and chairs were replaced, it was still my
spot at the head of the table).
(*One snowy morning I had parked my bike in the rack at a building
across the alley from the station. Several cops were standing around
outside. As I got nearer they had a look in their eye and I knew
something was up. Suddenly snowballs came flying at me. I ducked beside
a cruiser and made as many as I could and lobbed them over the car. The
day shift commander was coming out a side door and I ran toward it,
tossing a ball as I went and when I got close he shut the door on me. I
was pelted with about 10 balls at once. We were all laughing and
carrying on. I yelled I surrender, don't shoot and assumed the position
with my face to the wall, my hands against it and my legs apart. :)
The day shift commander used to pull a lot of pranks on me and my bike,
such as hiding it somewhere when after the one I mentioned was stolen and
I put the new one in the station. The best was when the bike was put on
    the roof.
I would be wandering around looking for it when missing and ask if
anyone had seen it. "Nope" they all replied straight faced and kept on
    going.)

Did you have a costume and a superhero cape?? <G>

They were born in NC (I think) and came here at an early age, went to
grade/high school, Marshall, etc. Maybe were he took his stage name.
His original name was Pierre LaCock. I think the family was Swedish. :)

I even heard him as a "DJ" with big band and swing music when one of
the radio stations in town had that format. Unfortunately, most folks
nowadays don't care about the classics anymore. Upon hearing what some
call "music" nowadays (I use the term loosely), my late wife lamented
    "If that's music, we're doomed".

The mother replied to her inquisitive daughter that "White is a symbol

You didn't answer whether the new trainees were denser than the
    average.... ;)

    Hard to say.
The first week so much is thrown at them (esp. in crash courses like lately) they are more dazed and confused than anything else. It takes
a good two weeks for everything to be absorbed and then the Aha Moments set in.
In the past I was able to discuss things with them but now its a
week of training and out on their own. Sink or swim.

And you aren't likely around for that second week to see how they
    actually work out....

I have had people people who seem at first they will work out and
don't and others I didn't think would last a week who turned out very well. A day in class, then out in the field. Its when they are on
their own they prove their meddle. When no one is hovering around
    them, coaching, directing, etc.

Have you heard yet how this bunch of trainees is doing on their own...?

So you codified what you felt was the best practice in the field, from
the contradictory orders from the bosses... ;) Did you run it by them originally, or just figure you had it well enough...?

I had the head of parking look it over who made one or two minor
    changes and ok'ed it.
I was reminded of a barber college here once.
A student would spend time cutting hair and when they thought it was perfect call over an instructor. Each time that guy would do a minor
snip here and a snip there (not enough to make any difference) and ok
    it.

Just enough to keep the student on his/her toes.... but otherwise put
the stamp of approval on it... :)

And obviously the chief's implying that you had relatively little
knowledge to impart has no basis in reality.... <G>

    Decline in work.
When I started in parking in January, '02, we had four people. Three
from 8-4 and one from 1100 to 1900. That was one too many so it was
dropped to three, which was great, two day and one afternoon shift. Kept everyone busy.
Then it dropped to only two and that's not enough to adequately cover
the campus. One worked 8-4 and one 11-7, so two people were in the field
from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Then the pay garage opened and hours changed from
8-4 to 7-3 since the morning person had to sweep the five story garage
each morning for over night parkers. (Over night parking now allowed,
the garage was literally closed, gates down, etc). Now that is no longer
done but the guy still starts at 7 but can't ticket until 8, so an hour
    to sit and do nothing.

asked "Did you work all those hours?" I replied, "Well, I was
here" and she said "Close enough". :)

Depends on the event, time of day, etc.
Usually we were just pulled from ticketing to traffic control, which
was part of the job as well.
I enjoyed traffic control as a rule, if the weather were nice. :)
There would be various job fairs and such a couple of times a year
with vendors hiring for summer jobs or soon to be grads. These people
always had goodies to give away and in thanks for helping them I would
get pens, bite size candies, etc. For a couple of years various
