It's merely entering a USID/PW when your signal shows up.
There is a bit of a trick to it through that I can't remember.
Something about setting up your personal network.
Other than the pc, that has no wifi, all mine connect to several
    options automatically.
Using any of them I can go from my network (turning off the
modem/router) and it will connect to others I have set up* without any
    lost of signal.
*I have three other accounts. One is the Xfinity wifi account which is connected with my router. The other is is the free city wifi which is
open and my Marshall account, which is log in, and that is set up to automatically log in.

With AT&T's DSL modems, every time there's a power outage, or a thunderstorm (lightning hit), the modems are fried.

No problems with storms with cable. :)

I had 2 calls to make yesterday

I found that if I need to call about a problem, like I had when the old
modem died, the best times to call are early in the morning, before 6.30.
I always get someone then after only a ring or two.
I'm generally an early riser so when I call at say 0530 I've been up a
    while already.

When she dialed 911 from it from the nursing home

Some years ago I had a cordless phone and a neighbour asked to call
someone. Generally the person is near where I am but far enough away so
    they have privacy.
He called this number several times and no answer and said he would be
back. I told him to just bring the phone back when he was done.
Several hours passed and no phone.
I was awakened around 2 a.m. to find a cop at my door asking why I was constantly calling 911. I said a neighbour had borrowed my phone and
showed them the empty charging cradle (or whatever it was called). They
went to him, got my phone back, gave him a lecture about that and gave me
one about loaning out my phone. Didn't do that again.

I rarely use the public WiFi.

I have nothing on anything that someone could use. I don't use
anything but the pc for banking and even then no useful information is available. I know people who have bank account, credit cards, etc,
(basically their whole life history on their phones). I have never used
the tablet or phone to buy anything.
I do have USID/PW's on the laptop and PC but who would want my account information for the newspaper, You Tube, Memories, etc?
The only personal info I have is name, address, etc.
    I move anything I can't replace (pictures, etc) to a thumb/CD as a back
    up and storage.

    Joe,

There is a bit of a trick to it through that I can't remember.
Something about setting up your personal network.

I've got one now, but a real complex password.

Other than the pc, that has no wifi, all mine connect to several
    options automatically.

Mine are hard wired to the router, but the WiFi from the router is
    where my cellphone connects to.

I found that if I need to call about a problem, like I had when the old
modem died, the best times to call are early in the morning, before 6.30.
I always get someone then after only a ring or two.

You get them before they have their coffee and donuts. :P

I'm generally an early riser so when I call at say 0530 I've been up a
    while already.

If I'm up in the night, it's usually for "nature and a nightmare".

I was awakened around 2 a.m. to find a cop at my door asking why I was
constantly calling 911. I said a neighbour had borrowed my phone and JM>showed them the empty charging cradle (or whatever it was called). They JM>went to him, got my phone back, gave him a lecture about that and gave me JM>one about loaning out my phone. Didn't do that again.

One can't disable 911 on those phones. Otherwise, I would've let my
    Mom keep it.

    I move anything I can't replace (pictures, etc) to a thumb/CD as a back
    up and storage.

I've got a backup drive with a program for both computers, but every
time I say I'm going to run the program, something always comes up.

    Daryl
