That's not the way the lawyers see it, what they see, even in
cases like that, are dollar signs.
Sometimes.... If they get hit with too many of those thrown out, they
might stop chasing after them so much...
I imagine the lawyer gets paid even when they are thrown out.
I would think a lawyer sees it as easy money, not a lot of work,
etc. Of course not a big payoff either when they lose and divvy up the loot.

Actually.... that sort of case is taken on contingency... If the case is
won, or settled out of court, the lawyer gets a percentage of the
    award... otherwise they get nothing....

The sorts of cases that the lawyers get paid no matter what are things
like criminal cases and family court cases...

To me someone like that woman shouldn't even have a drivers
license in the first place if she (or anyone else) is that stupid.
Oh, I certainly agree... it's like needing to warn people now that
something you are taking out of the oven or the microwave is hot...
what did you think, it would be ice cold, despite your putting in
there to be warmed up....? <G>
Its like all those warning signs plastered on everything today.
Such as ladders what warn the user if they fall off they could get
    hurt, etc.

Doesn't leave any room for common sense.... not that it's all that
    common any more, though.... ;)

Need a band-aid? Here, fill out this 10 page liability report
    first.
Sigh.... At least one should be able to be treated first... ;)
One fills out the forms while someone else looks for a band-aid. :)

When I had my bike accident some years ago and busted my left shoulder
I spent a long time with the receptionist answering questions before I
    saw a doctor.
Same thing when I injured myself at work.
I guess if I came in on a stretcher, blood all over, they might speed
    things up a bit.
    Funny thing.
When I was there for the shoulder I was asked who my insurer was. I
said I had none. The receptionist got this odd look on her face. How
was I going to pay I was asked. I said "cash". Oh, she said. Sat there
a moment with a puzzled look on her face and asked another woman if they
could take cash? She had to go ask someone else who asked another person
and finally they agreed to accept cash.
My bill was a lot lower than with insurance.
I can't recall the amounts but for sake of argument:
Doctor visit $1,000, less cash, $500.
X-rays $200, less cash $75 and so forth.
In total my bill was less than half what insurance would been charged.
I paid less in cash than what premiums would have been.

    Joe,

I guess if I came in on a stretcher, blood all over, they might speed
    things up a bit.
    Funny thing.

That's the way it is in most ER's. If you're "not on your death bed",
you're going to have to wait a bit...unless you get there when it's
unusually slow, and they have plenty of staff on hand...but those
    occurrences are EXTREMELY RARE.

When I was there for the shoulder I was asked who my insurer was. I
said I had none. The receptionist got this odd look on her face. How JM>was I going to pay I was asked. I said "cash". Oh, she said. Sat there JM>a moment with a puzzled look on her face and asked another woman if they JM>could take cash? She had to go ask someone else who asked another person JM>and finally they agreed to accept cash.

    In a word, wow.

That reminds me of the story in the Wal-Mart checkout lane (you see
all of life at Wal-Mart, much to ones angst :P ). The customer had put
the "divider" on the conveyer belt, to note where his groceries "began
and ended", to differentiate them from the customer ahead of, and behind
him. The cashier was scanning stuff, and she picked up the "divider".
She looked high and low for a UPC code, and was about to call her manager...when the customer said "No, thanks...I won't need one of those today". She didn't have a clue!! <G>

I paid less in cash than what premiums would have been.

That speaks volumes. What you ought to ask if they take Federal
Reserve Notes or Legal Tender...and see what kind of reaction that gets.

Or if it was evident you were having a heart attack.....

Just not a common occurrence to be sure... ;)

X-rays $200, less cash $75 and so forth.
In total my bill was less than half what insurance would been
    charged.

Of course, the insurance company would look at the bill, and say "Doctor
    visit $1,000?, we allow $400.... x-rays $200?, we allow $100" and you'd
pay either a flat co-pay, or a percentage (probably 20%) of what they
allowed as a charge.... so you might not have paid as much....

I paid less in cash than what premiums would have been.

Depending on the policy, I'm not at all surprised... that could have
been a real factor... :) It's the part of the equation that convinced
us to stay with Original Medicare and not go for an Advantage Plan over
it... the additional premiums would have taken more than the potential
savings of having a co-pay instead of the co-insurance...

That's what I've got...plus their current prescription drug plan (I
think with Aetna) is great. I pay $7 for name brand, and $3.50 for
generic. I remember the big stink with Epi-Pens for $700 -- I saw a deal
that I could buy them at CVS Pharmacy for $100...but with my drug plan,
I got a generic version of it (a 2 pack) for under $10. That way, I
    didn't get "stung"...pun intended. :)

I take 5 different meds a day...and am lucky in that regard. Many
    folks take a lot more.

With drinking all the flavored water lately to keep the kidneys
flushed out, sometimes it's too much for the colon to handle, so I get a
visit from "Uncle Monte (Zuma)", who brings "Crampa" with him. :P

But, I'd rather have diarrhea than vomiting any day. With the latter,
even anti-nausea medicine here doesn't stop it...I have to take the
ambulance to the Emergency Room, and get a massive infusion of Zofarin.
That's usually associated with bouts of gastrointeritis...but,
thankfully, I haven't had to deal with that in a long time.
