    Joe,

I try to keep up with the traffic, since going too slow is as much a
    hazard as driving too fast.

It is the law that "slower traffic must keep right". Yet, folks are
passing me obviously speeding. It sounds like a double standard.

Add to the fact so many drivers are distracted these days. They're on
the phone, texting, looking at some GPS read out, any number of things JM>and not paying that much attention to what's going on around them. So JM>many have the attitude, "Its my road, get out of my way".

Or if a woman is applying makeup as she goes down the road, she is
literally "farding" (note the spelling) <G>.

I see people walking along texting and walking out into traffic, into
poles, etc. I've even seen people texting while riding a bike!

One woman in Florida was so enamored into her smartphone, that she
walked right into the side of a moving train, and was seriously injured.
I think she filed suit against the railroad...personally, I hope it was
laughed out of court!! And, all these folks who complain about the
trains making too much noise?? The railroads were there long before most
all of them were even born!!

I generally only carry my phone when working. If for some reason it
rings when I'm riding along I just let it ring till I can get out of JM>traffic and be stopped. After all, there's always voice mail if its that JM>important. Generally the calls are someone wanting to sell me something JM>or begging for money.

I have the CALL DETECTOR app on my Android phone. It has blocked

    Sheesh.

Sort of like what Judge Doom said there would be after Toontown got

"Soon, where Toontown once stood, there'll be a string of gas
stations, inexpensive motels, restaurants that serve rapidly prepared

    beautiful!!". :P

Never mind rear end collusion. Before my wife died, if we were
following each other, and I suddenly stopped for whatever reason, I'd
    get "rear ended". :P

If someone is a hurry I'd rather them to go just around.

Same here. Admittedly, I am wishing they get pulled over by a speed
    trap.

There have been times keeping up with traffic and I'm several mph over
the limit and some nutcase goes flying past me and just a blur.

    I've seen it as well.

During road construction season this one area was having a lot of near
misses and a couple people hit because some drivers didn't slow down as JM>the signs said. A couple of LEO's around the area put a stop to that.

The signs note "Fines Double In Work Zones When Workers Are Present".
To me, it should be MUCH HIGHER than that.

But, but, but, don't you realise its all about _Me_. My wants, my
needs, my this and that. The heck with everyone else.

That's this generation. Too many things and people in this life are
meant to discourage and destroy each other. I want to be known for, and remembered as an ENCOURAGER. At times, I've paid the exam fee for a
license examinee, who didn't have enough money for a re-test. When they
passed it, they wanted to reimburse me, and I said "you're passing the
exam is enough for me...we get another operator on the air".

I am stuck at home until April 3, when my disability comes in (I'm
down to a paltry $13 in the bank), and that's not enough to pay the $37
repair bill on the car (it needed oil, but I prefer the professionals do
    it).

I have had two friends offer to lend me the money, or take me on
errands, and I replied "You likely need it more than I do, and have responsibilities yourself".

One of the items in "The Amateurs Code" (for amateur radio operators), written by the late Paul M. Segal (W9EEA) in 1927, notes that the
amateur radio operator has "consideration for the interests of others". Besides, the stuff in the Post Office Box can sit there until I can go
get it. It'd be the same if I had been hospitalized for a week.

Plus, with being into our tornado season, we have storms every few
days (we could use a good rain here, due to moderate fire danger), I
don't like going out in stormy weather. When the rain starts falling, it
brings up the oil on the asphalt, and it's like driving on a sheet of
ice. Folks think that they can stop just as fast on a wet, snowy, or icy pavement, as they can on a dry pavement. Guess who never took, or who
    flunked, physics??

These callers are using local numbers now. The phone rings and a
local/regional number appears and people think its someone else calling JM>and answer. And the numbers change often. So you block 123-4567 the JM>next time the number is 123-4568 which isn't in the blocked system.

These usually start with the area code and prefix of my phone number.
Upon seeing that, I block it. One constant number, with changing area
code, has 150 as the first 3 digits of the number...such as 150-2318 or 150-1607. Those are in my block list now.

It also breaks the monotony of the interstate.

That's true. But, I can't handle the long drives or rides anymore, as
my legs start to spasm on me. That's why when I travel, I take the
train, where I can stretch out in Business Class (extra leg room, with complimentary non-alcoholic beverages), or a Sleeping Car Roomette).
That's a lot easier on my legs.

The winter weather lovers have been furious, as Little Rock has seen
very little snow the last 2 winters. Now, we're on the flip side into
Tornado Season...with both this Thursday into Friday...and next Sunday
into Monday, looking particularly volatile. I prefer the cold weather,

    heat illness, and no tornadoes.

I believe it. The yard becomes a mud bog.

One of our goofy weathermen said a fire could still spark at any time

Spontaneous combustion is another cause. I check the Arkansas Fire
Info site for the status of burn bans and fire danger, and have such on
the BBS. If there's a high or extreme fire danger, with burn bans, they
cancel the fireworks shows...I wish they'd outlaw the fireworks stands.
Those with pets or with PTSD, suffer greatly when those things go
off...plus, if the sparks land on your roof during a drought, it could
    start a conflagration.

in his little car (painted pink of course), against none other than
"Granny Flash -- Senior Citizens Drag Champion". <G>

Tell me about it! Its all too common here.
And people will watch as a car ahead of them sinks and go on any way.
Once some years ago a big storm hit and they were flooded. I was
driving a truck at the time and pulled over to wait it out. The water
goes down after a short while.
This one viaduct had tow trucks on either side.
A driver would pull up, look at the water (you could almost hear the
little wheels in their heads going around), drive on down and sink.
The tow truck driver would ask if they want pulled out. Then he would
wade through the water, hook the car and pull it out. For a sight fee,
    about $20.
A minute or two later another nitwit would try and it continued till
the viaduct was passable. Sometimes a driver would try while the first
car is being pulled out and set to the side.

On the ham radio nets, I address the men (especially the older ones)

    The same here.
I never had a problem when titles were changed to MS since its
pronounced Miz, which just a Southern way of saying Miss. We've been
calling people Miz Betty, Miz Barbara for many years before it became
    popular.

is really nice to use wifi at home.
The city has free limited wifi downtown here which is really nice.
Limited in the sense it only covers so far, not in speed.

I have many recordings of "The Goon Show" from the BBC in the '50s

I guess that's where "The Gong Show" got its name.

    No connection what ever.
Chuck Barris took the idea of the gong from Major Bowles Amateur Hour,
which his show was a spoof of. Maj. Bowles had a much smaller one on his
    table near his mic.
The Goon Show had a cast of characters. Sort of a early Monty Python.

    Joe,

And people will watch as a car ahead of them sinks and go on any way.

You can't fix stupid. Duct tape won't either...but helps mask the
    noise. :P

A minute or two later another nitwit would try and it continued till
the viaduct was passable. Sometimes a driver would try while the first JM>car is being pulled out and set to the side.

The tow truck driver could've really made a bundle.

I never had a problem when titles were changed to MS since its
pronounced Miz, which just a Southern way of saying Miss. We've been JM>calling people Miz Betty, Miz Barbara for many years before it became JM>popular.

Break out the sweetened iced tea with lemon. I might have that
tomorrow for lunch, after I get my car...didn't have the funds to pay
the $37 repair bill, and won't until the disability comes in. Right now,
funds are "tighter than a frogs butt under water" for me.

You don't need a visor while sitting in the corner facing a wall. :)

    Guilty as charged. :P

The only time I enjoy snow is looking out the window at it. :)

Exactly...if you don't have to go out in it, it's beautiful.

    we normally get ice storms

We get those quite often as well.

I've noted it before, but when Arkanas had back to back ice storms in December, 2000...parts of the state were without power for 6 weeks.

In addition the laptop (but not desktop) has wifi (along with the phone
and tablet). Comcast provides, for a small monthly fee, a router which JM>is really nice to use wifi at home.

I've got the cable modem, and pay a fee for that, so if it goes "tango uniform", I can just take it to the west Little Rock office, and get a replacement. I negotiated a new 1 year deal, with a downgrade of
services. I mainly wanted the high speed internet...I rarely watch TV.

The city has free limited wifi downtown here which is really nice.
Limited in the sense it only covers so far, not in speed.

Some Amtrak routes have onboard WiFi, and some of the passenger
stations (mainly the larger ones) have it in the lounges.

I guess that's where "The Gong Show" got its name.

Chuck Barris took the idea of the gong from Major Bowles Amateur Hour,
which his show was a spoof of. Maj. Bowles had a much smaller one on his JM>table near his mic.

That show was so hokey. Ironically, he produced "The Dating Game" with
Jim Lange...and "The Newlywed Game" with Bob Eubanks.

The Goon Show had a cast of characters. Sort of a early Monty Python.

    Never really watched either one.

A few years ago when I got my new (to me) laptop I lost my cable.
This laptop has wifi and I contacted the Comcast office about the
trouble using a signal I didn't recognise and leery of them. (This was
before the free city wifi). And thinking back the old modem didn't have
wifi either. Now I have had cable since '01 and the first thing I do if there's a problem is check the connections, reset the modem, etc.
The woman (I assume) on the other side of the chat program told me to
do that. I had done it several times already. My problems had been
outside the apartment with various former tenants tapping wires, etc.
(The junction box is two and a half stories off the ground on the side of
the wall and someone once even tampered with that! We have had students
here and they are always looking to get everything free).
Long story short she eventually gave in and a repairman was here a
couple of days later. He said the problem was with the modem, replaced
it with a new one that is also a router and back in business.
In the past the repair guy came when he felt like it. Now they say such-and-such a time and are there in that time frame. No more making appointments to be here after I got off work only to find a note they had
been here an hour before I got off work then reschedule for 10 days out.
And they also now work weekends at no extra charge. :)
My guy was here on a Sunday.

I mainly wanted the high speed internet...I rarely watch TV.

I don't even have a tv. Got rid of it years ago.

Most all businesses here have free wifi for customers, get a temporary USID/PW, sometimes only a PW is required.
Some places you can even get a signal outside the building and not even
have to buy anything once you get a signal.
I have heard the buses have wifi on them and I think Lyft and Uber does
    as well.

    That show was so hokey.

I loved that show. I used to hurry home for lunch to watch it.
Of course the big hit of the show was "Gene Gene the Dancing Machine".
You know of course after the show went off the air he developed
diabetes and lost both his legs. He been dead for years.
The show is (or was) on You Tube, not all of them, but a few dozen.

    Joe,

A few years ago when I got my new (to me) laptop I lost my cable.

Sounds like a personal problem. <g,d,r> But, of all the things I've
lost, I miss my mind the most. <G>

(The junction box is two and a half stories off the ground on the side of JM>the wall and someone once even tampered with that! We have had students JM>here and they are always looking to get everything free).

One time, I didn't know the WiFi was open on my system, and the person
in the apartment behind me, grabbed a movie off of my feed. I got a
nasty letter from Comcast about it, and I had to get someone to show me
how to disable that, or set it up right (I was never told).

Long story short she eventually gave in and a repairman was here a
couple of days later. He said the problem was with the modem, replaced JM>it with a new one that is also a router and back in business.

With AT&T's DSL modems, every time there's a power outage, or a
thunderstorm (lightning hit), the modems are fried.

In the past the repair guy came when he felt like it. Now they say
such-and-such a time and are there in that time frame. No more making JM>appointments to be here after I got off work only to find a note they had JM>been here an hour before I got off work then reschedule for 10 days out.

I had 2 calls to make yesterday...one to Comcast to negotiate a lower
package (I still had to pay the higher bill today...I hope they grant a
credit next month), and the other to deactivate my Mom's cellphone I had
bought for her. When she dialed 911 from it from the nursing home (from
her dementia), and it wasn't an emergency, I told the staff to take it
away from her. I hated to do that, but the ramifications could've been
    real nasty.

But, in both calls, they asked if I'd like to be called back in x
number of minutes, instead of holding on the line. I said "yes" to both,
    and that was worth it.

I don't even have a tv. Got rid of it years ago.

I rarely watch it, except maybe for The Weather Channel, and that's
    rare.

Most all businesses here have free wifi for customers, get a temporary
USID/PW, sometimes only a PW is required.

I rarely use the public WiFi.

I have heard the buses have wifi on them and I think Lyft and Uber does
    as well.

The Rock Region Metro (bus) has WiFi.

I loved that show. I used to hurry home for lunch to watch it.
Of course the big hit of the show was "Gene Gene the Dancing Machine".
You know of course after the show went off the air he developed
diabetes and lost both his legs. He been dead for years.

    Wow.
