When my Mom and I made it, we used either Lipton or Nestea powder,

That not "real" tea, any more than instant coffee is real coffee.
A few years ago I ran across instant root beer. It was in a small
package (several to the box) and adding plain tap water made like a litre
of root beer, and tastes really good.
Only found that a couple of times and it disappeared. I think it was
carried by Dollar General or Big Lots.

Instant?? I thought it meant it quickly appeared. <G>

There used to be a product called "Charlie O". You got deal that you
filled up with water, and attached it to the CO2 dispenser, to get
carbonated water. Then, you put the carbonated water into a glass, add
your desired beverage syrup flavor, stir it up, and drink away.

I haven't seen them in years, and they may be long gone.
