    Oh I do, for sure.
I don't think many of us then knew how lucky we were to live in that era.
Oh sure there were problems (always have been, always will be) but life
    was better.

Sat down yesterday evening after supper and played Clue with my wife and children. It was nice. It's been a long time since I've just played a board game with anyone. Brought back a lot of memories of the '70s for me.

The 1980's were good because there was still great 1970's (and 60's) music
    to listen to. :)

Not to mention the cars. Until about 15 years ago I drove a '65 Chevy
Stepside, then a 76 Camaro and finally a 72 Duster. Loved every one of them.

I do so much driving for work now that driving a classic just isn't doable.
Had to get the next best thing, a Challenger. Current one is a 2012 with

I still have it on a shelf in storage.

Don't even get me started on those!
When I was in parking I had a regular, a nice guy, and one day I was on a smallish public lot and he was running around in those. I asked him what
was wrong with him and said "pull up your pants!" People turned to look at
me, how could be I say something
Another time I was in the golf cart and we were not allowed to go around pedestrians, so had to putt-putt behind them.
This one guy had his behind hanging out and I thought "Pull up your pants
for Pete's sake". He turned and glanced at me and pulled them up. I
thought "I didn't know my thoughts were that loud". :)

In the mid-70s I sold cars.
Started out detailing used cars at a L-M dealership, then sold Honda-Fiat-Subaru-Volvo's at a small place.
Then in 1977 I moved to a Ford dealership. That was the best, since had
a selection of cars unlike the other place.
A teenage fantasy of mine came true. I always have loved cars and at
Ford I didn't have a demo for a while so took my pick of ones off the used car lot.
"Let's see, what will I drive today? The '72 Grand Prix? The '69
Galaxie? The '74 Pinto? Maybe the '70 Cadillac..."
An array of cars, pick one out to drive for a day or so, then get another one. It was car heaven. :)
I really enjoyed selling used over new cars.
A new car buyer wanting a different colour, options, etc than what we
had, then tracking one down and switching with that dealer miles away if not factory ordered.
A used car? There is is, take it or leave it.
Besides, I made more on used rather than new ones.

I always wondered about running unleaded gasoline in a pre-1974 engine.

One of my dreams was to buy an old 1970s or earlier car - want a car with a carburetor, points, and simple electrics that I could work on. Want a car
with chrome, leather and wood and minimal plastic.

Last summer I restored a 1969 VW Beetle - basically everything other than painting the car. It was a lot of fun, super easy to work on...the motor was like 200lb and I was able to use a skateboard as an engine stand.

Now I have a 1967 GTO but I'm going the opposite direction from what you mention. I'm actually converting it to use a modern motor, trans, etc., but
to keep the same old "shell" of an old muscle car. It's fun for its own
reasons but man, what a money pit.

I inherited a 1970 Chrysler Newport sedan from my mother in 1983.
At the time there was a mixture you could buy for older cars that used
leaded gas. It did a fairly good job. Just add a can at every fill up.
I gave it away in 1987 (no cars since then).
A great road car but in town not so much. And I couldn't pass a gas
station without fighting the wheel with it wanting to pull up to a pump.

I know what you speak of.
The best car I ever had was a '65 Falcon. Everything was right there
when the hood was opened and lots of open space.
Today you nearly have to pull the engine to change a belt.
And so many of today's cars when they are in even a fender bender
literally fall apart from all the plastic.

On Wheeler Dealers, they mentioned that the lead in the gas helps cushion
the valve seats and if they had the head open on the engine, would replace
the valves with a more unleaded-friendly valve.

There was a Unocal station in Redwood City, CA, near the border to Woodside, an expensive suburb in the San Francisco bay area. They had one pump that pumped 105 octane racing fuel, and it would be fun to see the Lamborghini, Cobra, Vector, Ferrari and even a Konigsegg or Mclaren filling up.

No, though I do dig some of those conversions. I built a new LS motor,
ordered a block from GM and took it from there. It's an LS6 383 stroker,
forged bottom end, 102mm intake, cammed. Fun :) So it's quite a bit lighter than the 400 and it's got ridiculous flowing heads. It also sounds great.

The trans is a Tremec T56 I had assembled brand new as well.

I started out working on cars working on my sister's '71 beetle, lots of fun to work on. Did you ever see that old book "How to keep your Volkswagen Alive (A manual of step by step procedures for the compleat idiot)"?

Hah! If only FTN supported photos, I'd send you one of my bookcase with
it sitting right there. Love the art in that thing.

I drove a '77 Rabbit Diesel for most of the 80s, and had the spiritual successor to the original. Same pen and ink drawings.

When compared to a grainy black and white photo from similar books, the pen- and-ink drawings were wonderful. It was so much easier to make sense of what was going on with the drawings.

Find a totalled Tesla for a powerplant transplant?

No, though I do dig some of those conversions. I built a new LS motor, ordered a block from GM and took it from there. It's an LS6 383
stroker, forged bottom end, 102mm intake, cammed. Fun :) So it's quite
a bit lighter than the 400 and it's got ridiculous flowing heads. It
    also sounds great.

Sounds amazing. I drove beater cars in high school, but I helped work on my friends' '72 Duster with a 340, a '68 Barracuda, an old Challenger, a '77 Vette with an L-82 350...

(looking it up now, the L82 had 210 HP? My Camry with a V6 had 192! Man,
the late '70s and early '80s were bad years...)

Now I have a 1967 GTO but I'm going the opposite direction from what
you mention. I'm actually converting it to use a modern motor, trans, etc., but to keep the same old "shell" of an old muscle car. It's fun
for its own reasons but man, what a money pit.

Man, if only I could have my old cars back. :)
I'm also wanting to do what you are doing, but basically put a 6.2 L92 in my 1983 Trans Am. This is the one that went into 07-08 Tahoes, Escalades, Yukons.

    Nice!

The reason I went with aluminum is just because it was available at the time
    - $500 block brand new from GM. Couldn't turn it down.

I also made a decision to build from scratch instead of doing a junkyard
pull. I figured if I was going to put forth all this effort to build a car,
may as well pick every part intentionally from the get-go.

I've never been a motor head. Never that good at mechanics in general.
I'm able to take something apart but putting it back together is a
problem finding the first one had put in a lot of unneeded items since I always
    have parts left over. :)

I quite like the aesthetics of the 70s. Perhaps because I grew up in a house which had a lot of older stuff, and people still dressing in that style
    in the early 80s.

Interesting, there is no real distinct look or aesthetic today. Houses are minimalist white and dress sense doesn't appear to be all that stylistic.

So is Nick Mason. His band, IIRC, is named after Floyd's second album, A Saucerful of Secrets. Until the pandemic, they were touring. I have heard they are pretty good, but that is from biased sources (i.e. big Floyd fans).

So is Nick Mason. His band, IIRC, is named after Floyd's second album, Saucerful of Secrets. Until the pandemic, they were touring. I have heard they are pretty good, but that is from biased sources (i.e. big Floyd fans).

I've seen some of their footage & what I heard was from Echoes & before. Did a great version of Arnold Layne.

I am pretty sure I have read interviews with Nick where he says their
earlier stuff is his favorite, so I am not surprised. Honestly, starting
with "Wish You Were Here" and going backwards is where most all of my
favorite stuff is because there was more colaboration and you could hear it.

I quite like the aesthetics of the 70s. Perhaps because I grew up in a
    house

which had a lot of older stuff, and people still dressing in that style
    in the early 80s.

I remember those days and get a chuckle out of what we thought was cutting edge in style. Orange everything. (At least it wasn't avocado everything
such as kitchen appliances in the '60s).
Shag carpet you could never get clean, needed a special rake device
    on the vacuum hose.
I think the clothing styles of the mid '80s to the later '90s were really nice.

Interesting, there is no real distinct look or aesthetic today. Houses are
minimalist white and dress sense doesn't appear to be all that
    stylistic.

    Concur.
I like a place that is comfy not something where one is expecting
Home and Gardens to do a photo shoot any minute. Everything is so
    sterile looking.

Thank you. I was Borax Man, but I'm using my actual name now that I've been informed that it is a requirement. I am somewhat new here. Although I did use
BBS's in the mid 90s, I never used this service for reasons I can't remember.

My theory is that the 'sterile look' is due to a desire to keep things as clean
looking as possible, and perhaps it is due to advertising which preferred such settings to showcase products. I prefer texture and detail to break things up and remove solid blocks of monochrome from the field of vision. And if that means things are a little harder to clean, its is a price well worth paying.

My place looks like a typical professor's apartment.
Its small, with bookshelves with books, old time radio CD's, computer
odds and ends (external drives, etc), tables with drawers, table lamps, papers and such piled here and there.
The place is clean, but it looks a bit disorganised.
I have had periods where I put things away and then could never find what
    I was looking for.
As I wrote, I'm somewhat like the stereotyped absent-minded professor who roots around looking for something then just puts things back into stacks

If you ask my wife, I'm messy. If you ask me, I just have a lot of things I'm working on at the same time. Untidy I may be, but I don't tolerate filth. My study is stacked with 486 and Pentium class machines, books and CD's.

This time frame would also be nice to listen to the Moody Blues stuff as well...before Justin Haywood came onto the scene. For some reason...the music from both groups from this time is better crafted/performed than the later stuff. For that matter...much of the stuff after the British Invasion of the States to around 1970 from outside the US is spectacular.

Don't get me wrong...if it wasn't for the later stuff from these bands...I would've never gotten into commercial broadcasting & fell in love with this music from this period.

Same here. I grew up listening to the music as it came out circa 1978-82
or so, then started learning about the past of these bands. For example,
The Wall came out then. I liked what I heard and eventually learned about
the older stuff, which became my favorite. I still like The Wall, it just
is no longer my favorite PF album. :)

I agree. If I had a favorite...it would have to be either Dark Side of the

at the Gates of Dawn if still out there for being even more classic.

Heard a rumor years ago about after Sid left the band. He showed up in the studio during one of the later sessions years down the road...probably during the '70's & observed the rest of the guys doing their thing & left. That was the last time anyone saw him. Such a wasted talent...but just wonder what the band would've been like if he'd gotten himself straightened out?

Sid never actually left the band, but his sitiation changed largely.

I saw a netflix (I think) show around the wish you were here album that talks about the time sid showed up at abbey road studio while they were recording for the album. An amazing album.

That was supposedly during the Wish You Were Here sessions. I have seen,
or read, interviews with David Gilmour where he says that no one originally realized it was even Sid because he was so unrecognizable. When they did realize, it was pretty upsetting to them to see what had become of him.

Very true. Wasn't like with the Stone's 5 or so years earlier with Brian
Jones. Was reading recently that the rest of the band was waiting for Sid to get himself straightened out...but some of the business types around the band suspected this wasn't going to happen.

Got a name??? I would love to be able to get a copy of this.

In terms of the album...hell of a masterpiece. Like it just a bit more than Dark Side or The Wall. There are times I wish I were 10 years older &
would've had the chance to see the boys live.

Any talk about Gilmour or Waters doing tours in the future?

We read the same thing about this. Remember going to a funeral at a Mennonite church I was going to at the time. They played almost all of the band's stuff for the service. That left a mark with me!

One of the songs playing at my memorial service down the road is going to be some Gerry Rafferty tunes. Baker Street is my all time favorite. Realized the other day at work...it's almost biographical for both of us. Even more sad
than with Sid is to hear Rafferty's daughter/himself talk about what it was like for him growing up...then drinking all that talent to your death. I
cried the day I heard he died & the cause of it.
