I wondered why my smartphone bill had gone up, then when I looked at
the invoice, I blushed "That's right...I added that feature". :P

I have TracFone and pay only $19 and change quarterly (to keep it active)
and don't even use those minutes. I think I have close to 100 hours on my phone.
The only apps I use are the free ones.

I have always tried to make it on my own. I hate to ask anyone for
    help.

I hate to impose om folks.

I hate asking anyone for for anything.
I don't even ask for a ride somewhere. I have always tried to get
wherever I'm going the best way I can.
How in a situation like work, I have no problems asking someone, "Can you give me a hand here".
Speaking of imposing, I hate to call people just to chat. I always feel
like they are doing something and interrupting them.
I much prefer text/email since they can read and reply when they
    want/have time.

    2) They want money for food. They're told "follow me to this nice
restaurant, and I'll buy you a buffet lunch". They decline.

Knew a guy years ago who would say he was hungry and he was going
somewhere and would treat him. I don't think he was ever taken up on that offer.
Like the old joke the panhandler asks for a handout. The guy hands him a buck and says "Now don't spend that on food".

Another guy got done with his "panhandling", got up from his
wheelchair, and rolled it to a nearby parking lot, put it in the trunk
of his Lexus, and drove off. That soured me to the entire process.

There a some people who actually need help and others who abuse the good guys and give everyone a bad name.

If I could know their hearts and motives, it'd be a different matter.
But, because of the above example, I tell each of them that I'm broke.

Yesterday a youngish woman came up to me at a bus stop bumming money. I
told her I just had bus fare and she went on her way. I felt rather badly about that.

    Joe,

I have TracFone and pay only $19 and change quarterly (to keep it active)
and don't even use those minutes. I think I have close to 100 hours on my JM>phone.
The only apps I use are the free ones.

Well, that's my only mode of communication. With adding that Line Link
from T-Mobile (who apparently just bought Sprint), that works (I
think) with the Classic Phone Tools program and my US Robotics 56K
External Fax modem, as a fax line. But, if my computer/internet is down
for storms or otherwise, it's down as well.

I hate asking anyone for for anything.

Brother, you can you spare a tagline?? <g,d,r>

Speaking of imposing, I hate to call people just to chat. I always feel
like they are doing something and interrupting them.

I don't do that, unless it's family, or if they've asked me to call
    them.

I much prefer text/email since they can read and reply when they
    want/have time.

That's why I like the QWK Mail...I can download my packet, logoff,
reply at my leisure, then upload the REP packet, and logoff. I hadn't
planned to be up this late, but thunderstorms, internet, and router
issues, kept me offline Monday night into Tuesday evening, so I'm way
    behind.

Like the old joke the panhandler asks for a handout. The guy hands him a
buck and says "Now don't spend that on food".

Give him a penny for his thoughts :P -- but you never know if they may
have a gun or knife on them.

There a some people who actually need help and others who abuse the good
guys and give everyone a bad name.

    Precisely.

Yesterday a youngish woman came up to me at a bus stop bumming money. I
told her I just had bus fare and she went on her way. I felt rather badly JM>about that.

You don't know if they're telling the truth or are who are excellent
    liars.

Wait a minute!! That sounds like the folks in Washington, DC. <G>
