I should recall what Oscar Lavant did, but it escapes me.

He was a noted pianist who had all sorts of phobia's, also a drug user,
but it all viewed in a humourous manner. (The drug use wasn't discussed through).
He was on Information, Please on radio in the '30s and '40s. Very smart
when it came to anything music. Wrote music for movies. He was on Jack
Paar's show a lot. Chain smoked and always had one in his hand.
He was a really funny fella in a deadpan sort of way.

That was as bizarre when George Burns and Gracie Allen...plus when
Robert Preston...were the mystery guests. <G>

I always enjoy when a couple are guests and trying to figure out who the person was would be asked "Are you male (female)" and the opposite one would say "no" which really confused the panel.
My favourite panelist was Arlene Francis. I love that woman. Some of her remarks were hilarious.
She would say someone who say sold manhole covers if it were something
she would have in her house, with John Daley saying no. She would reply, "You don't know what I have in my house" and things like that.
She always wore a heart shaped pendant her husband gave her years
before. In the mid '70s she was mugged with it being stolen and never recovered.
And then Bennett Cerf and his horrible puns.
He wouldn't last on tv today with his remarking to female guests how
pretty they are, or if their good looks had anything to do with their job.
And John Charles Daley, I always remember him as the first newscaster to say, "We interrupt this program" to announce the bombing of Pearl Harbour.

    Joe,

but it all viewed in a humourous manner. (The drug use wasn't discussed JM>through).

That's right!! He played the part of the pianist in several movies
    about the composers.

I always enjoy when a couple are guests and trying to figure out who the
person was would be asked "Are you male (female)" and the opposite one would
say "no" which really confused the panel.

    Well, there's only 2 choices. <G>

My favourite panelist was Arlene Francis. I love that woman. Some of her
    remarks were hilarious.

There was one when she was asking something to the effect if their
clients were in California. To the guests response, she quipped "So many
    people are!!" <G>.

She always wore a heart shaped pendant her husband gave her years
before. In the mid '70s she was mugged with it being stolen and never JM>recovered.

I'm sure she was depressed by that. My late Mom and late wife always
said "if you get me jewelry, make sure it's 'costume jewelry'". That
way, if it was stolen or lost, it wasn't a great economic loss.

And then Bennett Cerf and his horrible puns.

Didn't he also do some books??

He wouldn't last on tv today with his remarking to female guests how
pretty they are, or if their good looks had anything to do with their job.

    I can't stand political correctness.

And John Charles Daley, I always remember him as the first newscaster to
say, "We interrupt this program" to announce the bombing of Pearl Harbour.

The 5 most feared words: "THIS IS NOT A DRILL" -- which was sent in
Morse Code over ham radio, prior to the message that the Japanese had
    bombed Pearl Harbor, was sent.

There was a line from Arlene Francis around 1965 where someone on the
panel mentioned "well, one can only be male or female" and she quipped something along the lines of "Things are changing so fast today its sometimes difficult to tell". I howled wonderin

He was both a publisher (Random House) and a author. He wrote several
    books on humour.
BTW, I just watched the last Dorothy Kilgallen (1965) show and the one
after her murder and their tribute to her. She was on the show from the
    start.
She was killed the day after that show.
She had written a lot of stories on the mob and its believed someone
didn't like them. I don't think her murder was ever solved.

I'll bet everyone else did, too. Your reply got cut off like you see
    it there.

Sad. She got into an embarrassing deal once, and said that "Groucho
put her up to it". :P

It was something along the lines of what would she think about today's
world with all the changes and trying to keep up with all the "new" genders being discovered on almost a daily basis. :)

And, that was over 55 years ago!!

BTW, that comment you said about the unsigned check being "worthless"
and Groucho's reply ("Wait until *I* sign it!!") made my day.

On a sad note, I found out via email from one of my users that FIDONet
Sysop Bill McGarrity passed away awhile back. So, I have to remove all
stuff related to him and his BBS from my system.

IMHO society started losing its collective mind around 1965.
Sure a lot of changes were good (civil rights, etc) but some people kept pushing and pushing and pushing...

I couldn't remember the name of his BBS (Tequila Mockingbird), and
knew he had run Sportnet...but wasn't sure if he ran other networks as
well. I looked through, and made sure his BBS and info was no longer on
    the system.

Or like the cartoon where the worker has her lunch inside a container
that said something like "Medical Specimens". That kept folks from
    stealing her lunch. :P
