Nope. He died as well, remember? :)

he'd been checked at midnight... at 2, for the next check, he was
    gone

That's the way I wanna go. Quick.
I may have mentioned this story before.
When I was about 40 a group of us were discussing our mortality.
I mentioned I didn't want to be life support and hoped someone would pull
the plug. Everyone's hand shot up to volunteer saying they would be happy
    to do it. :)

parish and lived out of town as well.)

The body was brought back for burial...?

    Yep.

phone call could have been made right after the death... there had to be
    some elapsed time there....

I'm sure there were several days between the two she could have made arrangements.
She probably figured, from her attitude, people were to jump at her
    command.

We did have the burial service for each of my parents within a few days
    of the death

Like your father, our then pastor was with my father when he died and
told my mother he would handle everything and shortly after the time of the church funeral and all.
I was involved in my mothers services.
My brother is not religious and knew no clergy.
My mother died early on a Monday morning and I contacted my then rector
later that day asking when would be a good time for him and a simple grave
    side burial.
It was done "by the book", literally, so nothing special was needed.
She always said she didn't want anything special anyway.

Ah, but his was just temporary.... If you don't count him, then there's
    only the two....

    Yep.

Then there was time to have arranged for the office at the same time as arranging for the transportation....

Yup, as I just said above...

My parents and family have always been lovers of the hymns of the
church... we sang quite a few at Daddy's services, and after he was
gone, Mommy started a list of hymns that she wanted to be sung at her
services (burial and memorial)... When she died, she had a list of a
dozen... That last night when I sat vigil with her, I worked over that
list to decide which to use when... we sang 5 of them at the burial
service a few days later (since the burial was held so far in advance of
the formal service, we had a more involved service graveside than
usual), and then the other 7 at her memorial service the following
month... :) I worked out scriptures to go with them, and gave the whole
thing to our pastor when he came to visit later in the day... :) Other
than that, it was also done by the book... :)

Some are like that...they think the world and everything in it,
    revolves around them.

Except for updating the weather and ham radio data, some days, I do no
BBS related work at all...because I just don't feel like it.
