I would be behind people on campus dressed that way and would think "Pull

One time I thought that and the guy in front of me actually did. I then thought "I didn't know my thoughts carried that far?"
One time this guy I knew was dressed that way and I said that to him.
People stopped and looked (not knowing I knew him) wondering how I could say something like that. He just laughed and pulled them up.

Even if they knew what that meant, they probably wouldn't care, anyway.

    True.

I miss the monthly BBS User and Sysop gatherings.

    I attended only one.
The woman who ran it was very shy and didn't show up. (She had
everything planned, all we had to do was meet and eat).
After it was over I wrote how sorry she wasn't there, everyone missed
    her, etc.
She wrote back she was there, just that no one knew it was her.
Then some wag wrote saying he wondered who the woman in the trench coat,
dark glasses and slouch hat sitting in a darkened corner was.

As a side note, I tried the their "Impossible Whopper" last week. It's
supposed to be a vegan burger

I think I'll pass. I prefer real meat in a burger.

    Joe,

So many have been raised thinking they are the most important person in
the world, the world revolves around them, etc. They have difficulty with JM>the real world.

I have some ham radio operators on the traffic nets, that think "the
world, ham radio, and nets, revolve around them". It, like the BBS, is a
HOBBY -- it should never take PRIORITY over such things like church,

One of a number of things I noticed on my trip.
My last cross country trip was in the mid 1970s. Then you had
mom-and-pop diners along the road. Those are nearly all gone now. I recall seeing
only two (ate at one) on my trip. Now they are all the same FF joints.
Of course gas stations with a max of four pumps are gone, replaced by
many pumps with options, convenience stores, etc.
I was in a truck stop somewhere in PA (can't recall off hand where, near
NJ) for gas that was more of a mini-mall than a truck stop. And inside
instead of hearty truck driver food were national burgers and subs.

Now, in competition, you wonder "Why should I work so hard? I'll get a
    trophy, anyway". :P

I still haven't gotten my trophy from the times I was called into work
with only minutes notice to fill in for someone who didn't show up.

Ah, but you didn't take inflation as a factor.
According to https://westegg.com/inflation/ a dollar in 1975 would be
equal (in buying power) what it takes $4.72 today, so 50 cent gas in 1975 would
be $2.36 today. Gas around here runs about $2.45 a gallon so one is paying about what was the price in 197
And people in 1975 remembered 25 cent gas.*
That westegg site is really great to figure out costs then and now. It
goes back something like 1800 to 2018.
(*When I lived in a small Colorado town in the late 60s and again in the '70s, there was a U-Pump-It gas station.
Gas was 25 cents a gallon and you used tokens. Gave the attendant (in a
box) the cash and got the token, either 25 or 50 cents each. If you had gas left over you either lost that amount (no refunds) or you sold that amount
to the next person in line.
One time I was going to fill up my tank at the one on the other side of town, ran out gas part way up the hill and coasted backward into a name
brand station at the bottom of the hill and had to pay 32 cents a gallon! Outrageous.
I recall going through Nebraska on the way back to WV in the early '70s
and gas was 42 cents a gallon. I refused to pay that much and went on till I found it a little cheaper. My '65 Falcon would travel miles on fumes.
A few months later the first embargo hit and people would happily pay 42
for a gallon of gas, if they could get it).

At a Lowe's Truck Stop in southwest Little Rock, a Subway sandwich
shop, and a Hardee's Restaurant are in the same building as the
convenience store...along with gas pumps outside for cars and trucks.

I saw a lot of Love's along the way. Nancy is familiar with them I'm
sure since saw a lot in NYS.
I remember the name because we had a locally owned hardware store here
for years and years called Love's.
It was a small old-fashioned place, crammed floor to ceiling with all
sorts of things. Shelves and shelves of odds and ends in the hardware business
with a display of larger items, which were kept in a back room.
Need a left handed hammer? They had one. :)
If one couldn't find what they wanted just ask any clerk and they knew exactly where it was.
No big flashy place like big box hardware stores.

I still haven't gotten my trophy from the times I was called into work

    Taxes.
The feds starting charging gas taxes in in the early '30s at one cent a gallon, then a few years later 1.5 cents. When it was rounded off to say
25.9 cent it was "cheaper" than paying 26 cents a gallon.
    Its psychological.
If one is buying a product at .99 cents it seems more of a bargain than paying $1. Granted it is a penny cheaper, but seems more so in one's mind.
One reason I am against getting rid of pennies. Price will be rounded
    up, not down.

I was thinking of the cost of feeding a horse, or a mule or ox in CXCVII.

I used to know all those Roman Numerals...the only time you see them
now is in TV shows and movies.

The feds starting charging gas taxes in in the early '30s at one cent a
gallon, then a few years later 1.5 cents. When it was rounded off to say JM>25.9 cent it was "cheaper" than paying 26 cents a gallon.
    Its psychological.

    Yep.

If one is buying a product at .99 cents it seems more of a bargain than
paying $1. Granted it is a penny cheaper, but seems more so in one's mind.

Or, they will only sell things like 3 loaves of bread for $1, and you
can't buy just one loaf for 33 or 34 cents. That happened years ago when
my parents (both gone now) were shopping in Pine Bluff.

My late father had been a comptroller for Swift And Company (a meat processing firm, bought out by ConAgra), and he could work a
"comtometer" with calculations like nobody's business...and he could do
a ton of transactions in his head. He was absolutely livid at the
    people's mathematical idiocy.

I'll never be as good as my late father was in computations...but I
don't panic when I run out of fingers and toes. <G>

One reason I am against getting rid of pennies. Price will be rounded
    up, not down.

    You got that right.

Speaking of pennies, I'm reminded of a funny joke, that I heard at a
    square dance weekend years ago.

This woman came up to me, and said "Can I ask you a couple of
    questions??". I replied "Why not??".

She opened her hand, and you had 2 pennies...one face up, and the
other face down. She asked "Do you see any automobiles or snakes
    here??". I replied "No...just 2 pennies".

She pointed at the back of the penny, and said "You have a Lincoln (Continental)...and then at Abe's bust, and said "You have a
    Copperhead". <G>

Groaning, I said "Ok, you made your point". She then asked, "Do you
see any sex here??". I should've known that something was coming, but I
    said "no".

Grinning, she replied "Amd, you're not going to see any. What did you
expect for 2 cents, you cheapskate??!!". She then turned and walked
    away. <G>

At which point, I accidentally kicked over a coffee cup half full of
water. Another square dancer said "You just couldn't wait, could
you??!!". I was so red. <G>

In central Arkansas, there's a Love's Truck Stop at Exit 161 and
Interstate 40...and possibly one at Exit 128 and Interstate 30...both
just outside the Little Rock area. There are also things like Hardee's
and Subway at the truck stop complex.

There's a Lowe's Hardware at Kanis and Bowman Roads in west Little
Rock, but I'm not sure of any other location offhand.

What I really need, is to go to either Home Depot or Wal-Mart to find

    1) An adhesive deal to hold the portable shower hose up. Before she got
so sick, my Mom converted the tub to a walk-in jacuzzi. It's hard to

    2) An adhesive deal to put on the hallway wall, where I can hang

Sounds like you need to go back from that reply. <g,d,r>

Originally founded in 1927 as Little Rock University, it became known
as Little Rock Junior College. When it was absorbed into the University
Of Arkansas System (the main campus is in Fayetteville in northwest
Arkansas), it became known as the University Of Arkansas At Little Rock,
or UALR -- some refer to it as "the University of Absolute Last Resort".
    :P

In the sports realm, only the Little Rock campus in the system doesn't
have a football team at present (the main campus again, is at
Fayetteville). But, both Fayetteville and Little Rock (possibly other
campuses) have basketball...and one year, Arkansas didn't win their
conference tournament, but UALR did...and as a result UALR went to "The
Big Dance"...and knocked off Notre Dame in the first round. That angered
so many Arkansas Razorback fans, it was pathetic. To make matters worse, Arkansas will NOT play any other in-state school. I guess they couldn't
live it down if they got beat.

So much has changed since I graduated over 36 years ago...as noted
    below.

THEN: No dorms on campus. It was a commuter campus...and students lived
in apartments off campus, or in homes with their parents.

NOW: Dorms -- and freshman students are REQUIRED to live in them.

THEN: Tuition was $400 a semester, with an average of $100 for books.
    (Arkansas residents).

NOW: Tuition ranges from $9167 to $15292 per semester (higher for those
who don't live in Arkansas). That includes an average of $900 for books,
plus room and board, and tuition and fees.

Many other schools are much higher than that.

While going to UALR, I worked at 2 area Burger King restaurants, and
lived at home, so I basically put myself through school.

When I turn 65 (5 1/2 years from now), if I wanted to go back, I think
    I'd be exempt from tuition.

    around innocently--

So much has changed since I graduated over 36 years ago

The last few years I revisited a couple of colleges I went to.
    Man, the changes...
A community college about 100 miles away is huge. When I went there it
was nothing more than a oversized high school, one building. Now many buildings.
Another in Colorado was unrecognizable. Again, that one had maybe three buildings, now the campus covers blocks.
WVU was pretty much the same, only the insides were changed and a few few buildings.

THEN: No dorms on campus. It was a commuter campus...and students lived
in apartments off campus, or in homes with their parents.

Still the way with junior/community colleges here. They are commuter
    schools.
But colleges and universities require all freshmen, who live more than 50 miles away, to live on campus for the first year.
Mostly its just all about money. The schools rake in a big pile of money that way from various fees.
The state is guaranteed a pile of money the first year since the student could flunk out but still collect the whole semester amount.

THEN: Tuition was $400 a semester, with an average of $100 for books.

When I attended WVU in the mid-70s tuition was $250 a semester, in state. (No idea of out-of-state). Books were equal to or higher than tuition. I
went on the GI Bill which paid tuition only. Books, fees, etc were up to the student to pay. (Thus PT job
At Marshall University tuition and fees go up all the time.
The Board of Governors (Regents in some places) meet quarterly and at
    each meeting costs go up.
Tuition is in the thousands, fees equal to that, not to mention the outrageous book prices. And if a freshman there are dorm fees.
Several years ago I was in the bookstore and a parent in front of me was buying a simple workbook for her daughter and that was over $90 and just one
of the many she was buying, and the cheapest.
I had classes where after you bought the book the instructor would say he wasn't using it and one could almost hear him chuckling over the wasted
    money.
Or a book has been "revised" and need the new book with the revision
being something that made no difference (new cover, or something minor).
And then getting pennies back on the dollar when selling the books later since whatever book one bought wasn't being used the next semester.
Marshall has gone to renting textbooks, which is a bit cheaper.
And some are now on DVD rather than paper.
I often wondered why some enterprising person wouldn't buy a book, scan
it and put on a CD and sell for a fraction of the book and still make a few bucks as well.

Innocent as a newborn baby -- baby rat, that is <g,d,r>.

Still the way with junior/community colleges here. They are commuter
    schools.

UALR, at one time, WAS a commuter campus.

But colleges and universities require all freshmen, who live more than 50

    that way from various fees.
The state is guaranteed a pile of money the first year since the student

The fees I quoted were "mild" compared to some colleges around the
    country.

The Board of Governors (Regents in some places) meet quarterly and at
    each meeting costs go up.

Or if some coughs, sneezes, belches, or f@r+$, it goes up even more.
    :P

Tuition is in the thousands, fees equal to that, not to mention the
outrageous book prices. And if a freshman there are dorm fees.

One year, I got the books for $77.77 -- the cashier said "Looks like
you hit the jackpot". I asked "Does that mean I get my books free?", and
she said "No"...to which I replied "D@mn!!" It was worth a try anyway.

Several years ago I was in the bookstore and a parent in front of me was
buying a simple workbook for her daughter and that was over $90 and just one
of the many she was buying, and the cheapest.

There are some off campus book stores, but some of the used books are
so marked up, that verifies "you get what you pay for". :P

I had classes where after you bought the book the instructor would say he
wasn't using it and one could almost hear him chuckling over the wasted JM>money.

I wonder if he got a kickback on that.

Or a book has been "revised" and need the new book with the revision

    Really.

And then getting pennies back on the dollar when selling the books later
since whatever book one bought wasn't being used the next semester.

A new edition every semester...that's ridiculous.

Marshall has gone to renting textbooks, which is a bit cheaper.

    Never heard of that idea.

And some are now on DVD rather than paper.

    Interesting...never heard of that either.

I often wondered why some enterprising person wouldn't buy a book, scan
it and put on a CD and sell for a fraction of the book and still make a few JM>bucks as well.

Now, there's an idea whose time has come. :)

    Nancy,

Possibly you overreacted there... I'd think that true friends and family NB>might have well been exempt from the unfriending... But then, I'm not NB>one to talk, really, since I've never had a Facebook account and don't NB>intend to get one... :)

I was even getting it from them, and I got tired of it.

The problem now is that I have 2FA (two factor authentication), and it requires them send a numeric code for me to enter, before I can login.
Yet, someone cut a fiber optic cable yesterday, and both my cellphone
and internet were out for a time. Facebook said I had requested too many
text messages, and so I had to send them a copy of my drivers license,
as verification of my identity. Of course, they're dragging their feet
    on getting me in.

Quite agreed that health is a higher priority than the other stuff... :)

    I also know my limits.

Sigh... I guess you'll know for next year's reunion that you'll need
the walker... and maybe to prepare better for the heat... :)

Yeah, next year, it'll be the walker, and I'll go inside to eat. With
the cloud cover and storms Thursday night and Friday, we stayed in the 70's...had been in the 90's every day since late August.

Can't blame you for getting tired of it... that's one reason I'm not on Facebook myself...

And that sort of hassle is another... A friend was asked for similar,
just because he'd not checked in on his account for what they considered
    too long a time...

Finally getting some relief... :) Our high today is just under 70
degrees... last two days had been in the mid to high 80s...

    Nancy,

Can't blame you for getting tired of it... that's one reason I'm not on NB>Facebook myself...

It feels good not to have a ton of notifications.

And that sort of hassle is another... A friend was asked for similar, NB>just because he'd not checked in on his account for what they considered NB>too long a time...

They finally unlocked my account. I don't use it that much, but at
least I downloaded some backup codes to use, if the cellphone goes down
again, and I can't get the codes.

Finally getting some relief... :) Our high today is just under 70 NB>degrees... last two days had been in the mid to high 80s...

We MIGHT get some relief come early October. I hope it's not at the
    price of severe weather beforehand.

Here it overcorrected... it's downright chilly at the moment... and
there's freeze warning for overnight tonight...
