• NNTP server and quotation

From Alexander Koryagin@2:221/6 to All on Thu Feb 7 20:53:42 2019

    Hi, ALL!

When I wrote messages via Paul Quinn's NNTP server I had a neat feature of his server -- it could properly make quotation when I replied to messages. NNTP server of Tommy Koivula doesn't have such ability. Does Tommy's server have no such an ability or the feature is not turned on?

    Bye, ALL!

    There is a setting "-smartquote":

"The quoting style of most newsreaders is different from traditional fidonet
software. If you enable this option, JamNNTPd will try to change any quoted
lines to fidonet style. This means that it will try to insert the initials
of the person you reply to before the '>' character and also that it will try
to compound multiple generations of quotes, i.e. "AA> BB>" will be changed
    into "BB>>".

Reformatting quotes in this way means that the user who posts a message will
no longer have final say over the final content of the message since it will
be changed after he or she sends it to JamNNTPd. Since this in principle is
a bad thing even if quoted text will look a lot better after reformatting,
this option is turned off by default."

And yes, it has been turned off in this server. Every newsreader has it own way of quoting, so it may or may not work properly.

However I remember that when I quoted messages with my own quoter, by
myself, my messages were not distorted. IMHO, Paul NNTP server has the
feature that his quoting system doesn't work if I quote a message by
myself. Probably Paul could say more on this account.

    Sorry. :)

    Bye, Tommi!

If the 'smartquote' is off, you can be sure that what you write is what
you see after posting. I prefer to keep the setting off.

I don't recall doing anything in particular. Yes, 'smartquote' is enabled on all my configured servers (all others are not public, like this one). You may care to revert to using your own quoter utility and look for any potential undesired side-effects.

Alternatively, if you miss the freedom of the Fidonet quoting feature you could administer your own JamNNTPd server. ;)

    Cheers,
    Paul.

Yes, I have my own quoter. It works even when I answer messages on WEB forums. But not every person so happy as me. Probably I asked Tommi for another reason -- to show the world that I am still alive. ;-)
