    Jimmy,

Okay - where is a good place to go and get ACCURATE repeater data?

There is the ARRL Repeater Directory (desktop or pocket size edition
or smartphone app), but both cost a pretty penny.

There is also an online repeater database, but I'm not sure how often
    it's updated...you can probably Google/Bing for such.

With the nets that I do now, I don't worry about repeaters anymore.

Had a local user say he swears by that book and buys it every year.
I did some research and it's bascially the rfinder site printed out.
I can buy the app for $12.99 and it comes with a one year subscription
to the site, but it still suffers from having to be updated by
    SOMEBODY.

I've also decided that people that already have repeater info don't
NEED it so why would they take time to update an online database? I
can get the local ones from local clubs, but I like to program in
out of town repeaters for when I'm traveling...

But, there are probably some who think "it updates by itself". That's
like these individuals in [insert hobby here] that think [insert event

you shouldn't expect to get much out of it.

Exactly! Until you've been in on the planning of any kind of 'event,'
you don't really know what goes on, and the amount of work and

I saw that with the Facebook page of some of the bigger
hamfests...such as Hamcation in Orlando, HamCom in Plano, Hamvention in Xenia...and the Huntsville Hamfest. So many on the outside take for
granted all that has to go on behind the scenes...then they complain
about the high cost of admission, etc. Basically, they want something
for nothing. Yet, Robert Heinlein was right...TANSTAFFL -- "There Ain't
No Such Thing As A Free Lunch".

When people have complained about the way I do nets or other jobs,
when I ask if THEY want to do the work, they instantly backpedal.

A fellow ham radio operator in northern Florida is president of the
local club (I told him on the landline "you poor bastard!!", and we both
    busted out laughing!!).

He said he nipped that in the bud real quick, when this club member
brought up that "the club needs to start and do such and such activity".
A fellow club member, next to the individual making the suggestion,
texted the club president "DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!!". Well, the
president said "Since you brought it up, I gather we can count on you to
head it up, oversee it, and take the responsibility for keeping it
going!!". The individual backpedaled in a hurry!! <G>

I do, too...believe me. Yet, while I could strongly use a
"compensation trip" for all the crap I've had to put up with in the last
year with moving back home (losing 95% of my furniture in the move, as
there was no room for it at my Mom's house -- and I still haven't
unpacked the stuff in the garage), placing my Mom into a nursing home,
and getting all that financial stuff done (my brother wanted nothing to
do with it, but he wants his money)...there are several red flags to
    consider, as follows:

    1) Even with an ADT Alarm System, a neighborhood watch program, and
constant police patrols...if an "alarm event" occurs, you can't just
"drop what you're doing" to come home. And, it's nearly impossible to
find someone you can trust to be there while you're away.

    2) Bedbugs at the hotels. These are a hellacious hassle, because you
have to burn all your clothing, bedding, etc. -- as intense heat, aside
from extremely strong insecticide, is the only thing that will kill
them. And, they are all over the place...in some areas, very concentrated...especially in New York City and Washington, DC -- in the
latter case, it's not just the politicians. :P

    3) Transportation logistics and cost. Going from the airport, train
station, or bus depot, via taxi to the venue, will cost you big time.
They really know how to gouge the tourists.

    4) Event costs. Costs at the event, as well as lodging, food, etc.

    5) Health issues. You never know when you'll have something like a
kidney stone, migraine, IBS, cardiovascular, or other illness attack
    away from home.

Now, I have "dreamed and planned" about tentative trips (one or the
other, but both would be nice) before mid-2020. But, there's the
possibility (and the way my luck runs, the likelihood, if not certainty)
that NEITHER of these will be able to be done.

    A) The 2019 Duke City Hamfest In Albuquerque, New Mexico, in September.

I could take Amtrak's Texas Eagle from Little Rock to Saint Louis. Then,
after a layover in Saint Louis, I'd take the Missouri River Runner to
Kansas City...then board The Southwest Chief to Albuquerque. Once in Albuquerque, I'd take the New Mexico Rail Runner to a shuttle stop
served by the Isleta Pueblo Hotel and Casino, where the hamfest will be.
So, ground transportation, per se, would not be an issue once there.
Everything needed, including meals, is all at the hotel/casino/hamfst
    venue.

On the way back, instead of detraining in Little Rock in the dead of
night, I'd go to Dallas, have lunch there, then take the northbound
    Texas Eagle back that night.

    B) The 2020 National Square Dance Convnetion in Spokane, Washington, in
    June.

The trip would start like the trip to Albuquerque, but continue on The Southwest Chief to Los Angeles. From there, I'd take The Coast Starlight
to Portland, then The Empire Builder to Seattle. I'd square dance
Thursday and Friday, then meet with area hams on Saturday, before
heading back out. I'd take The Empire Builder to Chicago...then one of
the Lincoln Service trains to Saint Louis to spend the night (I'd much
rather spend the night in Saint Louis than Chicago). Then, the next day,
take The Texas Eagle from Saint Louis to Dallas then from Dallas to
    Little Rock.

Normally, the National Square Dance Convention is the last full
weekend in June, and many times, the same as Field Day Weekend. But, due
to the HOOPFEST event, the 2020 event is one week earlier. Amtrak will
only let one book 11 months in advance of departure, and the sleeping
car space sells out FAST!! So, even if I had the funding for the Spokane
trip (I don't have it for anything at present), I couldn't book it until
    late July, 2019.

On another note, a fellow ham on D-Rats told me a hilarious joke the
    other night.

Q: How do you get an 80 year old woman to drop "The F-Bomb"??
A: Have another 80 year old woman yell "BINGO!!" <BG>

From what I hear through the grapevine, ARRL is really hurting for
funds and members right now. Most of its active members are my age or
older. Folks don't have the money, aren't interested, or because they
disagree with a lot of what ARRL is doing, aren't joining, or letting
their memberships lapse. Other clubs and organizations memberships,
especially for a "Life Membership" are far cheaper than what ARRL wants.

    I told them "$1100 a month on disability doesn't go far...so, you're
wasting your time sending me mail and email asking for money for The
Diamond Club, Spectrum Defense, etc.". I don't even order items from The
ARRL Store, unless I'm going to do a forum at a hamfest (extremely rare nowadays), and will raffle off something, like The ARRL Operating
Manual. At least you can get 25 of a certain item (like an information brochure) for free with an order.

I still have the older frequency charts without the 2200 or 630 meter bands...because most folks will be going for their Technician License at
a license exam session. The only real times I've seen folks interested
in taking an exam is right before a certain element Question Pool and
resulting exams, are to change...such as the General this July...the
Extra in July, 2020...then they take a year off (2021)...then the
    Technician again in 2022.

I also switched my sessions to "pre-registration required", with a
deadline to register of 48 hours before the session. That way, the VE's
don't go out there for nothing.

ARRL life membership is cheaper than QRZ.com's or The American Legion's lifetime memberships. I became a lifetime member of the NRA but I was able to do that for $600 which was half-off.

People don't realize what a good resource the ARRL is or how much they fight for ham radio. There's a lot of "craphouse lawyers" in the ham scene and they think they know everything about ham radio when all they are doing is hurting the hobby and definitely not helping. It's this attitude that is scaring off new hams and new hams joining the ARRL in general.

The ARRL is our voice in the ITU and that affects everyone.

I don't mind dropping $50 a year on the ARRL. Considering I have my shack and its entire contents insured via the ARRL, it's a very good deal for me.

Q: How do you get an 80 year old woman to drop "The F-Bomb"??
A: Have another 80 year old woman yell "BINGO!!" <BG>

LOL - I will be sharing that one... :-)

I thought of the classic "Wizard Of Id" comic strip, where it noted
"It's 11pm. Do you know where your grandma is??"...and you see her going
    into the bingo hall.<G>

A sad note...found out on the Arklatex D-Star Net last night from
Rick, KA2BSM -- that David, KD4NOQ, from Memphis, became a Silent Key
Monday night (not sure if you knew him or not). Rick will announce the
funeral arrangements on the CERT Net Thursday night at 8:30pm Thursday
on Reflector 58A. Rick was understandably emotional, as David was who
got Rick into D-Star. I believe the funeral is set for Friday.

It's pretty bad when the first thing you look at in QST is the "Silent
Keys" listing. But, I like to look at it the way the late Red Skelton
did. He checked the obituaries first, and if he didn't see his name
there, then he made coffee. <G>

It also reminds me of the pun where the guy who did the death notices
for the local paper brought his son to work with him, as he was also
getting into journalism (I had that both in high school and college 40
years ago). He was helping his Dad with his job, so his title became
    "son of obituary editor". <BG>

A ham had also sent Rick a "black" R2D2 picture, which is now the logo
of the Memphis Digital Amateur Radio Club (MDARC), which Rick
affectionately refers to as "The Darc Side Of Digital" (hi hi)...and
R2D2 is when the D-Star signal gets garbled. After seeing a D-Star
presentation at a local ham radio club back in 2012, I got into it,
thanks to Rick. I got to meet him at Memphis Freefest several years
ago...but the 3 hour drive between Little Rock and Bartlett is maddening
along "The I-40 Speedway", especially with all the 18 wheelers (trucks).

Several years ago, when a runaway barge on the Arkansas River, at
Webbers Falls, Oklahoma, damaged the I-40 river crossing bridge,
resulting in detours, reroutes, etc. -- repair crews worked around the
clock, 24/7, for 2 weeks, to get the bridge rebuilt!! Two seasons on the road...Winter and Construction. In Arkansas, they note "Fines Double In
Work Zones When Workers Are Present". A fellow BBS user, Nancy Backus,
in Rochester, New York, says it's "Two Work Zone Violations In A Year
Means Loss Of Drivers License". I wish it was that way everywhere.

I've noted this before, but it's so true. Only in America...we rush to
beat the traffic lights at intersections...the trains at the railroad crossings, and the boats at the draw bridges. Yet, we'll stand patiently
for 3 hours on a golf course...you figure it out.

... Dijon vu: the feeling you've tasted that mustard before.

I know that's right!! Pilfered for my collection. :)

I think of the old Grey Poupon commercial, where the guy asks "Do you
have any Grey Poupon?"...and is told "No, but you've got bird poop on
    your windshield"!! <G>.

Yes, I'm in one of my nether moods today...Eric, KJ4JEU, asked me "are
you off your meds again??" -- I replied "I refuse to comment, on the
grounds that it may incriminate me". <G>

Rick, KA2BSM -- that David, KD4NOQ, from Memphis, became a Silent Key Monday night (not sure if you knew him or not).

Not sure. I definately had never met him, but when my wife was in
the hospital in 2017 I was alone on the road a lot, so I was hitting
the repeaters down there and would check into a simplex net. Might
    have talked to him then...

He was helping his Dad with his job, so his title became
    "son of obituary editor". <BG>

LOL - another good one. :-)

I've noted this before, but it's so true. Only in America...we rush
to beat the traffic lights at intersections...the trains at the
railroad crossings, and the boats at the draw bridges. Yet, we'll stand patiently for 3 hours on a golf course...you figure it out.

Not me! LOL Went golfing ONCE with my brother years ago and my first
thought after 9 holes was, 'we've been out here HOW long!?!?'

Drop me a line...maybe we can have an eyeball QSO.

Here's a couple more for you:

    1) Golfers are sexually active, as they engage in fore-play on the inter-course. :P

    2) These 2 male golfers are playing 18 holes, and they notice 2 women up
ahead of them, who are playing SLOW. One says to the other "Let's ask if
we can play through, or we'll never get past them".

So, one goes up there, but comes right back...and says "I can't do
that!! One's my wife, and the other's my girlfriend!".

His buddy says "No problem. I'll take care of it".

He comes back a few minutes later, and replies "Ain't it a small
    world??!!" <BG>.

I took a nasty fall in the QTH the other night. I didn't break
anything, but got a bruised right knee, carpet burn, and some minor
swelling. It could've been worse...I could've been killed!!

Ouch - yeah, at least you're still alive. :-)

BTW - thx for mentioning the Low Testosterone thing... I read a little
more about it and decided to see the doc. Was able to get in this
morning and they drew blood. Should have results Tuesday.

I know we never really hope something is wrong, but I'm kinda hoping
that's the cause of some of my 'issues...' Cause then I can get on
the road to being back to normal!

Email me at wx4qz at arrl dot net -- that's the fastest way for me to
get it. I usually check BBS email only once a day.

He comes back a few minutes later, and replies "Ain't it a small world??!!" <BG>.

I worry about the severe weather threat. We're under an ENHANCED RISK
of severe weather here into Sunday, with an UPGRADE to MODERATE RISK
possible. Significant tornadoes, very large hail, hurricane force winds,
and flooding rain, are not out of the question. And, we could get a
repeat performance on Tuesday into Wednesday.

This mornings day 3 outlook shows a MODERATE RISK of severe weather
across the Southern Plains, plus western Oklahoma and Texas on Monday.
That may end up being upgraded to HIGH RISK.

BTW - thx for mentioning the Low Testosterone thing... I read a little JA>more about it and decided to see the doc. Was able to get in this
morning and they drew blood. Should have results Tuesday.

It can lead to a whole host of other problems if not taken care of.

Best to be proactive on ones health. And, once you hit 50, it's time
to start thinking of a colonoscopy.

If "Liar, Liar, Pants On Fire" were true, the resulting conflagration
in Washington, DC would make The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 look like
    child's play.

    Jimmy,

I have the smartphone up 24/7, unless I'm at the doctors office...so,
I can check email, even if everything else is offline due to
    thunderstorms.

SPC has a RARE "high risk" for west Texas and Oklahoma...and the WPC
has a high risk of flooding for portions of Oklahoma.

Well I just took it as a thing of Jesus letting me know through you...

Thanks. I'm looking forward to the day when I'll have a new
incorruptible body, that won't have to worry about all this crap. I'm
still sore from that fall I took at the QTH last week, and the pressure
changes with the weather don't help much.

Yeah - I'm 52... Probably should do that too...

The prep work is literally a PITA...but, if they don't find anything
in the procedure, you may not need it for another 5 to 10 years.

Too bad you can't use the gas generated for your vehicle...or I'd get
a case of Bush's Baked Beans, ask Duke (or his replacement) for the
secret formula, and tell OPEC what they could do with their gas prices.

Yeah - my left knee was injured (like a sprain, but I didn't go to the
doc) back at Christmas. Took some time to work it out, then over the last
week I must have done something to it again.

You can be so careful, but sometimes, it's not enough.

That's like the politician saying "I'm going to tax your memory", and
a person yells out "I figured it'd come to that sooner or later". :P
