• Moderators role

From Alejandro Filimonchuk@4:900/102 to All on Mon Jan 3 09:55:48 2022
Ive been following your conversations, guys, and Im convinced about two
    things:

There are too much "dead" echos... it would be cool to merge some.

Moderators nowadays need to do some kind of job promoting topics, posting interesting and related stuff, and not only those old lists of boring
rules... c mon, nobody cares! A lot of echoes are zombie-like... it would be cool if every moderator could post something useful and enhance the
debate... Dont know, but maybe some interesting article (not only "a
link"... but thats better than nothing at all) twice or thrice a week.

This is, of course, a change in perspective and a traditions change too...
but I think its worth. Happy new year!!!

"Everybody" agrees, but there are no practical sollutions to get that accomplished fidonet wide...

A lot of the areas are "moderated" by only a few moderators. They don't seem interested in promoting all their areas, and some aren't even that active at all...

Maybe if you (or anyone else) see an area that is currently more or less empty but are interested in promoting, you should ask the current moderator if you could take over the area?

    Bye, Wilfred.

or just start posting in the area and make it more active... i mean, i'm not going to bust my arse trying to find stuff to post just to get someone else to start talking... if ""you"" have something to say (within reason and within the echo's rules), say it ;)

here's an example... i've noticed an increase in traffic in one of my echos... the traffic was on topic and worthy of posting... after some time, i contacted the main poster of that traffic and offered the echo to them... now it is their echo and no longer one i need to deal with maintaining any more...

Ok, ok... nice answers, people. Yeah, of course I try to participe as much
as I can. Im just talking about the moderators role and how its somehow changing (if we compare it with "the past" ;)

Heres some "oath": This 2022 Im gonna apply for at least two echoes that are someway inactive. I still think that moderators could do more, and of course
Im not pointing my finger to anybody! Its just an idea, and we need to
preach with good deeds and examples, so I really need to apply for
moderation if I want you guys to take my words seriously :)

At the end of the day, its a hobbie, and it would be funny if we tried
diffrent things or "strategies" and later on check if they worked or not. Thanks for this debate, guys!

FAIR ENOUGH!!! :D I will apply for that, I promise. Thanks for your reply, Mark!

Thanks for your comment! And welcome.

I fear that most operators of the boards today are more
absorbed by the technical aspects of getting their boards
operational and making sure echomail flows. Most sysops do not
    really seem to be communicators/writers.

Perhaps "in the beginning" echomail content was generously
provided by users and visitors to the boards. At some point,
the concept of a moderator was deemed necessary to step in and
wrangle people onto better behaviour or have them delt with -
something a sysop was probably more than happy to delegate to
someone else. Sysops could just sit aside. Meanwhile the
consumer left the village to go elswhere. Now, the village is a
ghost town of empty buildings and empty rooms. There is nothing
    to moderate, literally.

Moderators nowadays need to do some kind of job promoting
topics, posting interesting and related stuff, and not
only those old lists of boring rules...

The moderator term does not exude editor/writer. :(

I concur. As moderator of this echo, that is precisely the way
I look at it. Check out my earlier posts if you can. I don't
have the responsibilty of maintaining a bbs system, so I can
make time to try and contribute to a topic.

This is, of course, a change in perspective and a
traditions change too... but I think its worth. Happy new
    year!!!

Once again.. I appreciate your speaking up. Perhaps lay out a
plan - which echos ought to be merged, and why. Or.. as Mark
has mentioned.. generate some content to wake up the dead.
Maybe try to introduce other people you may know to the
    fidostyle of messaging.

First of all, thanks for ALL the replies! Very interesting chat...

Talking about this last one: Yeah, this week I will do some kind of "survey" and post here what echoes I think need to be erased/merged... of course that would be JUST my opinion! :)

And yes, during 2021 I introduced three new human beings to the realms of BBSing and FIDONET ;) They are somehow reluctant to participate (you know,
to actually "post" something) but at least they are getting used to read
FIDO, FSX, Araknet... maybe this 2022 they will start posting (cross
    fingers!! hahaha). Anyways, nice advices.

    Have a nice day!!

Indeed. And it isn't only the moderators role, to keep an area alive, without users the area remains dead...

What kind of systems do they use? Laptop? tablet? smartphone?
What kind of topics have they shown interest in?

Wrt tablet/smartphone, some Fidonet areas are easily accessible
using Telegram. Maybe that's is the more convenient way they
    are hoping/looking for?

Oh, I had some issues and havent been so active in Fidonet! I hope this week I could express here my thoughts! Sorry about that, August...

And about those three people I introduced to Fido.. well, they use smartphone and SyncTerm, so there will be no problem for them, I guess... its just, you know... kinda difficult. Maybe with Telegram groups and Stas' system, yeah... for sure I gonna tell them, even publicly in my BBS.

    Bye bye!!
